Polymega console to start shipping next month for early pre-orders

Following production issues and delays, Playmaji says that its retro modular console, Polymega, will now launch next month. The press release specifically mentions that this launch is for those who pre-ordered their systems via polymega.com between September 2018 and April 2020. The company will begin fulfilling orders, in the order received, of Bundles, Base Units, Module Sets, and accessories starting September 12th and will complete fulfillment by the end of October 2021.

"Despite the challenging shipping environment presented by the COVID-19 pandemic starting last year, and other factors beyond our control at our Myanmar assembly facility in 2021, our team is excited to finally reach this critical release milestone, and further, we're beyond grateful to our thousands of customers who stuck with us and believed in the vision of POLYMEGA® and what it could mean to the future of the video games industry," Playmaji CEO Bryan Bernal said. "We're now ready to move forward to the next phase of this project including the launch of our digital games store for Holiday 2021, and a sharp increase in production and availability of POLYMEGA® systems for 2022 and beyond."

For orders placed after April 2020, partial shipments will be provided in September to official Polymega international distributors, with ongoing fulfillment proceeding through Q1 2022. As for orders placed placed more recently in late 2020 and 2021, shipping will be delayed to the first half of 2022, including the GC01 Light Gun.

This thread reminds me
Remember when people said
THERE WILL BE A NINTENDO 64 CLASSIC
Eh, I'd rather see a Nintendo DS Classic - it kinda hurts to admit that wonderful console, a fundamental part of my childhood, is "retro" now...

The 64 is just too polygonal, only has one analog stick, and some of its best games would now need to be licensed from Microsoft - at least, that's my view of it. Still, it does have better Pokemon games than the Switch does, so, eh.

Not exactly. It's literally what the Retron 5 is but for disc-based games like PSX, Sega CD and so on.
So it is a retron 5, BUT with an anbernic capabilities, BUT without screen, and still sold in pieces.

Unlike the retron 5, retro freak, anbernic and many others, it do not play all systems it supposed to out of the box, you need to buy parts. Just like an EA game, but for emulation consoles.

While there are many other emulation devices, I think this has potential, even if it is niche. A few key differentiating factors:
  • Multiple consoles in one box is appealing. There are some other devices which do this like RetroN, but overall it's the minority.
  • The modular design means they could release new modules down the line to extend support for other consoles. Whether or not they will is a different story altogether, but they are selling people on the dream. Dreamcast and N64 are a couple mentioned on their FAQ as potential targets, which would be absolutely killer to add-on.
  • Support for original controllers. This has a huge impact on how you experience your retro games, even more than emulation vs. original hardware at times. As far as I am aware, other all-in-one boxes pick one controller design and stick with it rather than allowing you to use the appropriate controller for each console platform you play.
  • It supports original cartridges. For a long-time collector of retro games, using a cartridge is more appealing than scouring shady websites for a ROM that's been DMCA'd to heck. It also lets you install them so you don't have to swap them in and out like you would with most other devices that support retro game cartridges.
  • It's legal. Believe it or not, that matters to some people.
Is it for the typical gamer? At that price point, probably not. But it doesn't have to be. They're going for an audience with specific ideals in mind. To that end, I think it will deliver. The remaining question for me is how good the emulation will be. Given the consoles they are targeting have a storied history of open source emulators, I'm fairly confident they can put together something that is acceptable. Now "acceptable" may not be good enough for those that obsess over maximum accuracy, but those people aren't exactly the target audience in the first place; for them, nothing short of the original hardware is satisfactory.

I think it just plays original CDs you have of old games and other things, check their website: https://polymega.com/
The only thing on there that makes it sound interesting is the light gun. I'm hoping there's going to be an affordable and authentic-feeling way to play old light gun games on new systems besides this before too long, I know people have been working on it.

It is as legal as any other emulation box. It is even less legal than a Retron 5, that do not allow you to play things you not own (at least out of the box). Polymega will allow you to borrow a game, and clone it, or clone your game and then sell it.
Also we still have no guarantee that they are not using stolen (aka pirate) code from other emulators, so, may not be legal in that sense either.
Lastly it may be purposely easy to add roms, like the analogue products, witch is the same as any aliexpress console.

Personally, I really do not bother with piracy (those huge gaming companies are not feeding my children anyway), but for those who do care about that, this product should not be a relief of conscience at all.

I kinda hate the retron 5. I've owned two, and both had software issues, so I bought a retron 3 HD, which I think is like the original retron 3, but it has an hdmi port on it. games play fine, but it's a bitch to remove the cartridges without an eject button of some sort. you have to pull out cartridges in a very specific way or risk breaking off the teeth inside the console. it's pretty terrible, so I rarely remove the cartridges. there's a youtube video on how to remove the cartridges properly, but it doesn't help much, because they're very snug in there.

I have a retrofreak, that have the same problem. There is two solutions that I came up with:

One is using adapters. Like those converters from Super Famicom to Super Nintendo. It is kinda hard to find for some consoles, for others it is not

Second one is replacing the slot for an original one from a broken console. That is what I'm going to do very soon. The old components are high quality and are naturally loose, so it will be an easy remove.

I have an idea, maybe. I could use the original hardware instead if I end up breaking the retron's teeth. I have a framemeister, and it has composite and svideo inputs on the front of the device, upscales, then transmits as hdmi. I have all of my devices plugged into it. I mainly got it for psx games from my ps2, since my tv isn't compatible with 240p. it works no issue, and games look pretty good with it. not sure how games as old as the nes and snes will look though.

I had never heard of this before but had a look at their website and if their product actually does what it says then it is very far from what another poster here described as another "android emulation" system. The idea that one system can play all original games from NES to Saturn, using our own provided discs is fantastic. If this actually works as promised I might consider buying this. Who among retro gamers wouldn't actually want such a thing? Their controllers also look to be good attempts at replicating the classic controllers of each system generation - they have an 8bitdo feel to them. Consider me impressed.

Framemeister + everdrives is an amazing solution for sure. Money, space and wire mess ia what throw me to those inferior options.

Now that you talked about it I realized that the polymega costs more than the new retrotink. So yeah, makes even less sense...

I'm kind of a purist, so I bought several cartridges with the most expensive so far being dragon view at $25 or so. I want mega man 7 and x3 for the snes, but they're over $100 apiece. I have the other mega man games on the nes/snes. I also bought several of those snes game binders. they're somewhat expensive, and they only hold 6 games:

But it's modular which is what that person you were quoting was getting at. The Disc drive portion doesn't change, but you can get different modular ports: a NES port, SNES, Genesis, etc. That can plug into the top of the system to allow those games to be played. Hence the claim that its a Retron5 sold in pieces.

@lokomelo btw, I keep those game holders underneath my bed along with a box for most of my other snes games, so they're really dusty on the outside. I have about five or six of those holders.

$400? Just for emulation? Holy shit, it better be on par with the power of a Series X or PS5. Because this does not sound like something worthy of being $400. I noticed it says it's not based on Libretro/Retroarch. ...Why do I have that little feeling deep inside me that it will turn out to be BS?
