Ok so its finally time for me to get a PS3...

The question now though is what revision, which one is the best, what do i need it for, which one are more reliable ones etc.
So basically i want to be able to run homebrew and emulators on it and play original games also and games from an HDD.
I honestly dont know anything about PS3's so i was thinking to make this thread so you guys can perhaps help me to make a better decision and to learn about PS3,
listen to your experiences so i can buy the best one.

Also what to pay atention when buying used one, what firmwares can be hacked and does it have some limitations etc...
Basically i wanna prepare in advance

Thanks!

All firmwares can be hacked, any slim model will do, they don't get the ylod and the hard drive is upgradable

i was thinking slim, its the most stylish one of 3.
Anslo what do you mean they all are, i heard that only fat is downgradable and any fat can be hacked and only certain slims can be hacked.

Whats ylod?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

also what are pros and cons of all 3?

ylod = yellow light of death. it's when the system will flash yellow for a split second, then continue flashing red iirc. I've seen it happen to a ps3 before.

pros really are that launch ps3's are bc as are some other systems that are bc based on software (launch ps3's are bc based on hardware), so the launch ps3's should be able to play 99% of ps2 games while software based is about 80%. the other systems can play ps2 games, but it's kinda hit and miss which ones work or which ones need a config file. I don't really mess with the ps2 on my system (only have 3 games for it), so I don't know a whole lot about it.

cons would be that phats are more prone to failure, so unless you're a hobbyist with electronics, it's not worth having someone else fix it if things go wrong. slims are more reliable, but they have less ports, can play less ps2 games than the hardware and software phat ps3s, which are probably the only phats worth getting. I have a slim 2501 myself, and it's pretty quiet, though not nearly as quiet as the superslim I bought. you can't even hear the fan with that thing, though the superslim is much larger than I thought it would be (not much difference in size between it and a normal slim). the 12GB superslims (not sure about all of them) also do not come with a hard drive or even a hard drive cage/bracket, so you'll have to buy both separately. those systems also can't install cfw, only hen. I've never tried hen as the superslim was to go legit, but I had issues with the playstation store, so I decided not to do that.

ok so...im pretty confused about all the terminology and all things around PS3.
I literally have no clue about the console at all. Never seen one, never played it or had it.

So basically i want to be able to play PS 1,2,3 games, both from disc and from hdd (i presume all 3 ps3's have HDD)
Also i wanna install retroarch and play emulators.

As for the console, i want the one thats as you said quiet and reliable as a hardware.

You say you have PS3 slim and super slim. IS slim a lot louder than super slim?

I also heard that phat is not that good its dying, it was a first revision etc....

I kinda like slim version, but im not sure about super slim. are they better as a hardware, i mean they are newer?

you'd need an early system to play ps2 from disc. those are unreliable unless you fix them. the slim isn't loud at all, it's just you can hear the fan when it's quiet (can't hear it at all with my superslim unless you put your ear to it). not all ps3s come with a hard drive. the 12GB super slims don't come with an hdd or a mounting bracket. you'll have to buy those separately if you get one.

The slim has nec/tokin capacitors which means it's just as prone to ylod as the phats. The super slim on the other hand has tantalum capacitors and as an added bonus has no ihs on the rsx.

you should aim for a 200x (2000 series) or 2100 series slim as those are sure fire perm cfw slims though imo a 3000 slim or 4000 super slim is theoreticly safer to be online cause the modding is temporary and less easy to my knowlege for sony to get syscall data and ban your system just make sure your logged out of PSN before you use Hen (iirc i read on another forum spoofing your fw now will trigger an instaban cause the way to detect spoofing or rather how the spoof works was sold to sony via hackerone) activation is no longer required on latest evilnat cfw either so slim is a better choice just keep fan on dynamic control via webman that way it should keep your slim from getting ylod or at least prolong it's life

i wont be using online, i'm buying it for some PS3 games i waned to play, alone, or multiplayer with my
friend in my room.

As for these....
-whats a "fire perm cfw"?
-what is "Hen"?
-I also don't get this: "activation is no longer required on latest evilnat cfw either so slim is a better choice just keep fan on dynamic control via webman that way it should keep your slim from getting ylod or at least
prolong it's life"
What does Activision has to do with overheating a PS3 slim?

Look, i'm completely new at all of this, and you guys toss me terminology like i already own and used a PS3's
and hacked them in the past. I never had ANY contact with the console, this will literally be my first one i seen and played and buying.
Plus, English is not my main language...but i try.

Anyway, so i should look for 2000 series slims, they are the best, is that what you wanted basically to say
here, correct?

So slim can die of overheating?
-What does a PS3 need to do in order to overheat it self, or what do i need to do apart from
regular usage to make it overheat and get that YLOD?
When i read this i have impression that PS3's are just dying in massive scale from YLOD...
-Also Whats: "nec/tokin capacitors" and "Titanium capacitors"??
-And what's: "ihs, rsx"??

I swear to god, i don't get any of these terms, they just make me more confused.

So....slims are just as bad as phat are, and super slim is what i should get?

Hard drive is what i'm least concerned about, if i can get one from PC store, right?
I can just by any PC HDD or SDD?

As for PS2... I don't care that much about playing PS2 games anyway, they can be emulated right?
But if not, ill be fine, i have PS2 slim for PS2 games anyway!

I'm also not super eager on having RetroArch on it, it's just what i would normally do on consoles, and what would be a bonus, but it's not a "must have" on PS3. That's NOT why i want PS3 anyway.

I'm more concerned about getting a reliable and quality system that can play ps3 games from HDD or Discs
and be quiet, and NOT to get that YLOD thing or overheat.

Also, i can copy legit PS3 games to a consoles HDD right?

That YLOD is what i'm most concerned now tbh... overheating is causing that, right?

Jokey_Carrot said super slim has some "titanium capacitors" and regular Slim's are prone to YLOD just as PHAT's are?

The ps3 doesn't die from overheating. It'd simply turn it's self off to protect it's self. The ylod is a general fault which can be caused by many things but the most common cause is the nec/tokin capacitors failing. A small amounts of ps3's may suffer gpu failure but it's very uncommon and nothing to worry about.

Does that mean i can replace capacitors and fix it?

Also are you trying to say that slims are unreliable just as phats are?

"sure fire" is slang for 100% the 2000 and 2100 series slms can have permmanant cfw Han is basicly temporary cfw (I deem it safer because as i said it's easier to NOT get banned (as long as your not logged on psn your ok) thought Evilnat's 4.88 cfw does have the advantage of activating a profile offline (again it helps to reduce a ban) it doesn't even need to be a psn profile just a local account wll do

Pulling this from another thread since I see no reason to clutter it when Meto already posted a thread:
there this guy selling hacked console. its ps3 slim. how do i know if its a permanent hack?
what should i ask him?
I'm not familiar with the temporary solutions. I presume that a way to test that would be checking if you can install/run homebrew after booting the system. If they've provided more details, other than "hacked system", please post them. If they haven't provided any other information then asking for more details would be a start. Can you inspect in person the system you'd potentially be buying?

Alrighty than, i went to guys home to see the console my self.

here are the details:

-Serial on the back is "CECH 3003 B"
-System menu is 4.86
-It has HEN installed and must be applied whenever you turn ON the console. I presume its not permanent. I mean does it really matter? Its easy to start a hack if i need it.
-HDD is 500GB (i think?)
-Condition is 8.6/10
-Fan noise is really low, not PS2, WiiU or Wii low, but it's low.
-I played few games a bit (sonic generations, mortal konbat, gta5) but only when in gta5,
inside a game, playing, the fan started to make audible sound. I mean its not like a hair dryer loud but
its like my PC' graphics card when playing some intense game.
Havent tried many, but in Sonic generations it was normal... i presume GTA5 is intense game for PS3 idk...

Anyway, that's all the info i got.

He sells the console, cables (power and HDMI), one controller.
He said that controller battery lasts 2 days easy with one charge.

All of that for 110€
