Nintendo Wii game ports being delisted from the Nvidia Shield in China

nvidia-shield-china.900x.jpg

In 2017, it was announced that gamers would be able to experience Nintendo Wii games legitimately, on a non-Nintendo platform. The Nvidia Shield received ports of select Wii titles, such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and more, all in upscaled 1080p resolution, with the caveat being that they were only available to those in China. However, almost four years after the fact, those games are being delisted due to poor sales. According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, who previously broke the initial story of the Nvidia Shield Wii ports, the ability to download those very games is "being shut down". Those who purchased them will still be able to redownload them, though they require a server authentication in order to be played, and it's currently unclear as to how long support for said server will be active.

RIP the emulator likely written by sonicadvance01 after being stolen from hired off of Dolphin by Nvidia

Tried to look for a source but could not locate anything. Any source that he was poached from Dolphin to NVIDIA?

I know we can't ask for the APK files here, but have they at least been preserved? Because that's what matters.
I should have all 4 of these backed up somewhere if I recall correctly.

Edit - Just double checked, I only have New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and Zelda Twilight Princess. Only one I'm missing is Punch Out. Here's hoping someone has Punch Out archived.

That's a shame, would love to see if someone can figure out how to emulate that server-side authentication for the games, maybe this will refresh interest in it, though I doubt anyone will succeed.

At least Dolphin has made some huge strides on Android, although the current X1s Nvidia is still using aren't going to be enough to emulate the games as good as these ports can. Maybe if Nvidia ever bothers to make a proper Shield TV 2 and not just refreshing with the same hardware after some 5 years now

iirc he was at least contracted. I remember a more concrete source back in the day (although it may have just been on IRC or something), but it's somewhat implied from his Twitter. Spontaneously pulling out of Dolphin dev in particular and not contributing anything else at all since 2017/2018 or so strongly implies an NDA/non-compete. He's also retweeted the official Nvidia Wii stuff a couple times and posted a photo of miscellaneous Nvidia chip dies. I know it's a bit circumstantial, but I couldn't find any better sources at the moment either.

I imagine this would've sold better if y'know it wasn't China-only, but it's a shame it didn't do too well and we all know Nintendo will now point to this and say "our games didn't sell on a non-Nintendo console, let's never consider putting games on other stuff ever again".

who cares just use dolphin and a mayflash bar on the PC
than get some texture packs and play the games like they were supposed to be. MP trilogy with tergs text pack looks fucking outstanding. it's like the job nintendo never did.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Is there any way to get this on my nvidia shield?

Yes, the Dolphin Emulator :P
and watch the games play like shit! only PC can play them properly at 1080p. i tried dolphin on my shield tv pro and it was an absolute joke. and there's nothing more powerful than the ST pro and it couldn't handle 1080p.

i don't even know how these ran properly on the shield in the first place in china :wtf:

Please have this preserved...
Don't worry, everything has been preserved and can be found pretty easily online, there's unfortunately just stupid DRM, verification and region locking that blocks anyone from actually playing the games.

Port these titles to Switch!
You really want a port of a kind-of-mediocre 2D platforming game?

I'm pretty sure a lot of Android devices support OpenGL. Especially the ones out back then.

Not just OpenGL...

I was really hoping I’d be able to coerce this into running on other devices, but that’d require changes to the graphics rendering since it uses OpenGL 4.5 (and Nvidia-specific shader extensions, to boot) which AFAIK aren’t available on most other Android devices, if any :<

Forgot these existed, wonder if they can be played on US & UK Shields. Side note, I have a shield but hate the layout, it would be much better with the phone/tablet layout, makes things happen in 1 or 2 clicks rather than 10
