New PlayStation Plus and Games with Gold games announced for August

AugGwG_16x9_HERO.jpg

With another new month, comes another round of titles included with your console's online subscription. Starting with Xbox Live's Games with Gold program, you get the standard arrangement of four games; two current-gen titles, and two classic titles from the Xbox 360 or original Xbox era. For the current-gen titles, Darksiders III is available from August 1 to August 31, while Yooka-Laylee is available from Aguust 16 to September 15. For the classic titles, we've got Lost Planet 3 available from August 1 to August 15, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves from August 16 to August 31.

For PlayStation Plus' offerings, we've got three games available starting on August 3. Hunter's Arena: Legends, covered during this month's State of Play livestream, is a Battle Royale game with PvE and PvP elements, and is available for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The other two games only have PS4 versions, but are still playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility: Tennis World Tour 2, and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville.

I think the actual number downloadable on PS5 is closer to 300 so yeah the 800 number isn't a fair comparison really, but it's still a decent amount more than Game Pass. The streaming is actually quite good too, I played Spider-Man on PC and it ran great.

I do have Game Pass also, and it's good for certain new releases like Flight Simulator, Forza and Halo. I just don't think it's as one-sided as most people make out when it comes to the services.
That doesn't sound too bad tbh - that said I've always had subpar experiences with cloud streaming, unfortunately. If I ever pick up a PlayStation, I'll probably give PS Now another try though!

I think where Game Pass excels the most, though... is that you can buy Gold for a good amount cheaper, and upgrade it all to Ultimate by buying a month of that. Makes it a really solid deal, all considered.

Has anyone had to pay for a Darksiders game in the last 5 years? Or at least pay full price? Seems like it's habitually on sale everywhere all the time. Sweeping generalization, obviously.

I wonder if playstation is deliberatly trying to loose this generation...asking for a friend mainly because they are doing a good job so far.

Well PS5 is the fastest console to hit 10 million sales, and they still can't keep it on shelves, if that's any indicator. At the end of the day, both PS4 and PS5 still have exclusives, while neither XSX nor XB1 do.

Oh I have both ps5 and xbox series x it's just some of playstations backwards ass thinking and ideas are leaving them way behind. For instance releasing the damn system without proper secondary HD support and still almost 1 year later not having said support. It's obvious they rushed the system out without having it complete. (Starting to wonder if they even know how to add the support for the second hard drive at this point.) Games that were scheduled to be out with its release (or right after release) have been pushed back. (Some indefinitely) poor game choices for ps+ and the biggest damn bug they have is the consoles ability to install a damn game from disk. Takes forever mainly because it checks online for an update and wants to install that before the disk and will refuse to install from disk and then update later. I have to turn internet off on the damn thing before inserting a disk to install just so I don't have to wait 20+ damn hours for an update to download on my shit internet because it prioritizes the damn update

Beta firmware already supports a secondary SSD, and you could always use an external drive for PS4 games. Prices for SSDs with enough speed are kinda high though, so it's a good thing PS5 games are often better-compressed than their PS4 counterparts.

Games that were scheduled to be out with its release (or right after release) have been pushed back.
A problem across the entire industry thanks to COVID. 2021 was always going to be a worse year than 2020 in that regard.

Can't disagree with any of that, I've got some good games since I started subscribing to PS+ back in January, but there were also plenty of stinkers on offer that I didn't bother adding to my library. My internet isn't too bad (usually), so updates haven't really been an issue.

Well, at least the new NSO games, are games that 99% of people didn't play yet. lol

Cannot say the same for Xbox and Sony's """free""" games.

I was giving this some thought and came to the conclusion that the disappointment is due to an inherent belief that online gaming should be free, therefore placing all the value of these services on the 'free' games every month.

Apparently, diablo 3 and one of the dlc is free with gold. I've noticed it on reddit and left the console download them, but it doesn't show up in my games with gold. It doesn't seem to be a free weekend either, so it may be a mistake

Edit: i did boot the game to see if it worked, and it did launch. I don't have time to play it right now, but it still doesn't show up in my gold section. Oh well, if it's a mistake they'll just render it unplayable tomorrow

Fun fact: Sony has PS Now, which is in fact a similar service to Game Pass in that it allows you to download (or stream) from a large selection of games. There is however a pretty big difference between the two of them.. Game Pass has about 200 games to choose from at any given time, whereas PS Now has over 800 games. Microsoft has marketed the crap out of Game Pass so most people think it's a major plus for Xbox even though it really isn't.
Also, huge difference, Microsoft took the time to properly set up infrastructure for streaming Game Pass to be a viable option for so many people. Have fun streaming PSNow content, seriously the difference in the quality of streaming is night and day. And I say this as much more of a PlayStation fan than Microsoft.

I did have fun, I actually completed Spider-Man on my PC via PS Now and it was a great experience.

It certainly works, but there is a noticeable difference in streaming quality. Not a big deal, as I'm sure most people aren't really gravitating to cloud gaming on consoles yet, but as things stand now, Microsoft definitely has the better infrastructure for cloud gaming.

If you mean it's subjectively better for you then I get it, but I'm pretty sure in terms of infrastructure it's the other way around. Sony has been building the service since 2014 and xCloud isn't even a year old. I can't imagine they could've caught up and surpassed 7 years of headstart that quickly.

Sony only just started to stream in 1080p at the end of April, while xCloud could stream in 1080p out of the gate. In the past when I have used PSNow, there has been considerable lag and resolution not even reaching the max 720p of the time. Tried Xcloud on same internet connection recently and had a significantly better time. Granted there was some time between those play sessions, but it indicates that it seems that Microsoft is taking cloud gaming more seriously out of the gate than Sony has been. Plus have you seen Microsoft's ridiculous setup for Xcloud servers? They aren't fucking around.

I mean, they haven't even released a Windows app for it yet you have to game in a friggin browser and it's a god awful experience. Maybe we're talking about different things though and you mean on the actual consoles themselves?

Yes, that's exactly what I've been talking about lol. It's weird to me that people even uses these services on PC. I know you can, but it just doesn't feel right to me to play Xbox or PlayStation games there.

Well that explains it lol. Yeah, it's a terrible experience on PC at the moment but I hear they are working on adding it to the Xbox app instead of through a browser. PS Now already has it's own Windows app that runs pretty well. But yeah, neither are as good as on the consoles themselves.

Fun fact: there are currently 467 unique games on Game Pass*.
*1,028 total games when other versions are counted. For example: DOOM Eternal (Console) v. DOOM Eternal (PC)

Owning both consoles I must say I am enjoying Game Pass a bit more because of its backward compatible games.
And all exclusives+ are included, so it is a plus (I wouldn't call it major).
Sony forces me to keep my PS3 if I want to play native, compression- and lag-free.

Last few months of PS+ games have definitely been lame. But it's not like my game backlog is short! I don't mind too much if the freebies aren't the best.
