XenoGC + SD2SP2

I only had a XenoGC at first but I kept getting read errors even after replacing the lens (I tried tweaking the pot, etc). Thankfully, I never had a problem booting discs, only playing them for more than 15 minutes, so it was perfect for SD2SP2 since booting up Swiss only takes a few seconds.

Also, I was surprised at how cheap SD2SP2s are.

Same here with the XenoGC + SD2SP2. I did 2 of them, My silver one (my first GameCube) had problems reading burned discs but, after adjusting the voltage on the laser(pots), it's working fine(many YouTube videos on this). After seeing the orange GameCube, I needed to have one. I did the region mod(so I can have English menus but, could switch back), a XenoGC and SD2SP2. All 3 of my GameCubes have the matching GB player.

Going this route I can still play my original discs. I don't see the appeal to replace the disc drive with a SD card. The option that I am using give me the best of both worlds... maybe not as fast... oh well...

You were around 4 years old when I "hacked" my GameCube @WiiMiiSwitch, using Phantasy Star Online + Broadband Adaptor to load homebrew back in 2003.

I never bothered to go for modchip when they became available at a later date, I owned all the games I wanted to play and the Xbox had the much better homebrew scene.

These days a softmodded Wii is like a supercharged GameCube.

I have 3 gamecubes, one of each America color (black, Indigo (purple) and silver). They are two 001 models, and one is a 101, but none of them have the SP2 port on the bottom, so I need to either chip them, or get a GC Loader. I just wanna be able to auto-boot into Swiss without an optical drive at all, and load my games from SD card. I currently have to boot up with an Action Replay disc that autoboots into Swiss from slot 2, then swap SD cards to load games. (It's annoying as shit.)

I bought one with a region switch recently. Seems to work but I have no games to test w/ it. Waiting on a copy of Smash Brothers DX and already have an SD2SP2. Also looking forward to grabbing a Game Boy Player to use with Game Boy Interface.

Of course. Having modded console is a must even if you use original discs. Swiss can force 480p resolution on most games which is useful with HDMI adapters.

I have 10+ GameCubes and most of them are modded. I have:
- XenoGCs
- ViperGC
- QoobSX
- GCLoader
- GCLoader Lite (clone)
- my own IPL replacement modchip inspired by Shuriken Attack

Some of my consoles are also HDMI modded using GCHDMI board. It's GCDual like mod with HDMI only. Much cleaner install than Pluto mod :)

Bitfunx GCHD Adapter + SD Media Launcher + Swiss + GCi + SD2SP2 + Xeno (that's a bit flakey and needs reinstalling)
...so yeah, I've hacked my GC. Not bothered about an ODE - I don't like giving up the functionality of original media... may as well just do emulation if you can't play your legit collection.

GCLoader is superior to the disc drive from technical perspective. But I have to agree with you: Having to replace the disc drive instead of just adding ODE functionality is a bit of a bummer. I think WODE on the Wii can pass through the original drive giving both options, optical drive emulator and discs.

If I get my hands on a GCLoader at some point, I will get a GC with dead drive for it as well.

Yeah, as a replacement for a dead optical drive it makes sense.

I'm still considering getting a Neo SD Loader for my NeoGeo CD as it can be installed in tandem with the original optical drive still left functional.
...ironically, the NeoGeo CD is among my smallest libraries of original disks and it plays burned media without hardware modification
