Pokemon Emerald's Eight is a ROM hack that lets you battle with eight Pokemon

Since launching with Pokemon Red and Green in 1996, the Pokemon series has come a long way. From global connectivity to 3D graphics and unique mechanics, much has changed over the years. And yet one thing has remained constant: your maximum party size of six. That is until recently, with the release of ROM hack Pokemon Emerald's Eight. Seeking to do what no hack before it has attempted, PokeCommunity's AstroBreak has introduced something entirely new in a maximum party size of, as you might have guessed from the name, eight. This extends beyond the player, with key battles being an 8v8 standoff.

To accommodate the extra two party slots and optional Gen 6 experience share, the game has also been somewhat rebalanced, with gym leaders in particular being a surprising challenge. You can find the full list of features below:

Features said:
  • Party size of up to 8 members on both player and enemy parties.
  • New 4/4 party manu layout.
  • Double battles supported.
  • Gen 6+ Exp. Share.
  • Custom gym leader, elite 4 and champion 8-member teams.
  • Reusable TMs.
  • Indoors running.
  • New music on gym leader battles.
  • Starter Tyrogue along with the usual starter of choice.
  • Hall of Fame supports 8-sized party.
  • Single full party bugcatcher at the very beggining that was used on testing, but decided to leave into the final game

Having put a bit of time into playing it myself, I'm still somewhat baffled that such a thing can even exist, and am incredibly excited for the possibility of similar modifications to shrink the player party for additional challenge. If you're interested in checking it out for yourself, head over to the original thread at PokeCommunity.

Pretty cool! I wonder how much this changes the experience. I wonder if a game where everyone was limited to fewer pokemon, like 2 or 3, would be fun. hmm...
Honestly I'd be all in on a one or two slot challenge hack. I really hope something like that comes from this.

It's a cool hack, but in its current implementation it seems like ultimately all it does is make a standard fairly easy Pokemon experience, all the easier.

I like the idea, but, if you intentionally use few monsters from start to finish, you get extremely overpowered soon.
So for this 3 party mod work, it is needed a much slower XP system.

I dunno, I overlevelled a bit and struggled with the second gym. I think the challenge is there at the moment, though maybe the rest of the game could use a boost.

If somebody made a randomiser for this it'd be lush.

YO!
DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF I CAN USE TWO PATCHES ON THE SAME ROM?

I'd love to use:
  • This patch
  • "Perfect Emerald" which allows the entire Pokedex + Evolutions of traded Pokemon (Alakazam, Gengar, Machamp, Steelix, Slowking, Politoed, etc)

I just wish it was possible to remove the damn-strict anti-cheat checksums, that inevitably turn boxed Pokémon into Bad Eggs...no other generation was as strict as Gen III in this regard.

As for shrinking the party size...nah. In the usual 6-member-party style, I already limited myself to 4, since I'd need two slots for HM usage (and because, if I added a fifth or sixth member, EXP would be spread around too thinly, leading to being underlevelled). I don't exactly find the idea of fewer members than that an exciting one.

Oh, and as for having 8 Pokémon at once, I'm not exactly fond of this idea in Gen III either; there's just not enough Pokémon species for it to be worthwhile. There's only so many interesting choices in a total of 386 species.
If this was Gen IV or V, then it'd be utterly brilliant, but Emerald...it's an amazing proof of concept, but nothing more.

It's a neat idea, but personally I'd need a more major gameplay change to get me to play Pokémon. So many things in Pokémon just seem outdated, and it's partially because GameFreak seems to think they got it right the first time. Oh come on, let's be real, they do it because taking a risk could hurt income, and honestly, I don't blame them.

Well, if they did expand the roster for the official pokemon, they could do more double battles. Also, you can have a more rounded team for all the types.
I wish someone made a hack that removed the 4 moves at a time lock. Would be amazing to have a full learnset to choose from in battles.
Or maybe just being able to change the 4 moves (easily) between battles.

An interesting idea for sure, but without a complete rebalance of the game...I'd personally say meh for me. Grinding just 6 Pokemon to keep a moderately leveled team is mind numbingly boring enough for me (even with EXP shares), I can't imagine how bad it would be for 8

But I'd love to see a fully rebalanced romhack with this in it, give the game more challenging encounters and give me the full dex and I'd probably give it a playthrough.
