So I played for a solid hour when the game got released and my feelings are mixed.
The gameplay itself is very nice but there are some design decisions that seem odd (or I have to get used to it).

For example: Hitting the Ball with maximum power is like playing russian roulette. Will the ball fly straight? Drift hard to the side? Who knows, luck will decide! Only way around it: don‘t hit the ball with full power.
No online rankings also make me sad after the very good ranking system from Tennis.

Then there is the grind factor: Unlocking the better Gear for Mario and Co will take a long while. Some may find this good, some may find it bad, I have not decided yet (idk how much better the 1 star and 2 star gear is).

Here is a Video of my first impressions with the game (german language):

". Will the ball fly straight? Drift hard to the side?" sounds like wind
Nah it's not the wind, the mechanic is that if you hit the ball 100% it somehow reduces the "accuracy", and the ball might randomly curve right or left for basically no reason. It shows it on the power meter like so:
9U7dpcm.png

Makes no sense, but a few other things in the game don't make much sense IMO though.

ie. when you do the whole "timed golf" thing where you have to hit the ball and then manually run to it, you don't actually get to see where the ball lands before you run (beyond the usual trail showing the general direction), or the fact that you can't really skip CPU players turns in any kind of match round even after you finish the hole for some reason. I've legit had to wait nearly a minute while a potato CPU kept fucking up their putt before I could continue actually playing the game ._. You also can't carry a full set of clubs with you, otherwise your "speed" will be reduced and you might not be able to finish a course without extra strokes when there's a time limit.

Here I was just hoping for a standard Mario Golf game, but they had to shove dumb gimmicks into it :/

afaik (don't know much about cfw on the switch) all games should work with sx os. some might have to be patched, but they'll work. the latest sdk I've seen is 11.something, so I think as long as there's none that require 12+, they'll work with sx os.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

btw, legend of mana requires 12.0.0, but it should work on lower firmware I think if patched. that's the highest I've seen for a regular game (not update). its sdk is lower than 12.0.0 from what I remember.

so there's no classic swing meter?

No.
The new meter works this way:
You press A and the meter start. At the desired power point you can press A for a standard spin, B for a backspin, BB for a super backspin or AA for a super frontspin. The bar gets marked with a line where you pressed the button(s).

Now, instead of the bar going back and you having to press a second time it works completely different here:
The bar starts to raise again - this time you can use the analog stick to give your Ball side drift and to do a higher or lower path of trajectory.
When the bar hits the mark you set on step 1 you don’t have to press anything. Luck will decide if you get additional drift like described above.

It is very unintuitive at the start but after s few rounds I start to like the new system. Also me playing Bowser who has low accuracy I realized that this is a cool way to balance the characters. Sure, I can go full power but at that point it is a gamble. Trading safety for the little extra distance to get on the green is a good design decision in hindsight.

There are some other problems though, like tree leaf behaving like solid walls and the lack of a free camera option or even rotating...makes putting kinda strange if you have no free cam.

yeah this seems luck based for a mario golf game and that's bullshit i hate to say i'm going pass for full price or not buy at all. the 3ds version had the classic system. why the FUCK would they remove that staple?

TBH I got some very nice chip ins in my last session with Bowser. Yeah it sucks that it sometimes f*ck up your otherwise perfect shot, I agree with that but I don’t think that the game is broken because of this. That is, imo, the least serious problem. But yeah wait for a sale (will also habe more content by then) or do “you know what” to test it out (shame on Nintendo for no beta / demo!)

I would give it a solid 7/10 (I rate Mario Tennis 8/10 for comparison)

Yes, I have same issue and ball went into different direction than I tried to point, also there is no arrow when closer to goal.

I gave this game - 6/10

Hi mod, I thought too but it seems like Mario games give extra powers like they did with Tennis too.

Can't wait to see baseball and soccer like they did in GameCube and Wii.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the view finder bloody annoying as hell and wish there was the standard birds eye view of where you want to hit your shot? Almost unplayable.
Use the top down view (I think X with default controls)

Also, for the people asking of there is normal golf: You can turn off super shots and there are 2 normal, realistic courses without any gimmicks

I could not find an option to turn off the course hazzard (pokeys and stuff lile that) for the other courses (which I realy wish was an option...)
