Vitor Vilela, a Brazilian Super Nintendo hacker also known for his FastROM projects that speed up classic Super Nintendo titles, has officially released a widescreen hack for the landmark Super Nintendo title Super Mario World. This hack renders the entire game as it should look normally, but expanded to fit the widescreen resolution that's standard today. Currently, it only supports 16:9 and 16:10 monitor resolutions, but more additions are planned, such as support for 2:1 or the 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratios. As of right now, a patched ROM will only be compatible with the bsnes-hd emulator.

Twitter user @fraencko shared some images of the game running on a widescreen monitor that can be seen below.

I think you need to use the stretch command as well. the original rom will not stretch with that command, but the widescreen one will. here's what mine looks like:

that's if you want it full screen. otherwise, it should fill the box. the original rom won't fill the box either (just checked). the patched rom does:

Great! Thanks! I got it to work in the standalone BSNES HD.

I can't seem to find how to stretch the screen in Retroarch. Where in the menus is that option?

I'm going to get the wide-screen hack and shrink it down to play on a 4:3 display.
Letterbox/cropping?
That is a hard debate. On the one hand I despise that in normal video more than I do stretching. On the other hand that would be basically returning it to stock, making it a bit of a pointless exercise (outside of some specific speedrunning ideas anyway).

Though I know you probably mean stretching such that it will be squashed/skinny, and now I actually kind of want to see that. Not to play, just to see, even more so if the creators do end up with some kind of ultrawide fun.

GX emulator can make any MegaDrive game even ultrawidecreen. Sega does, what nintendon't.
Bsnes-HD already did this 2 full years before the GenesisPlus emulator, with any game. What are you talking about? LOL.

There was a port of mega man X for the genesis ? Wow
Both are tech demos with some levels recreated, not "ports".

is there something else I need to do?
No. It just works.

Stretching is such a horrible aberration anyway... oh well.

I’m one of those weirdos who plays the older games in stretched widescreen

Yeah, the GBA really made this not a big deal for me back in the day, offering to stretch Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to fit the GBA display if you hit L or R, as a kid, I thought there was no reason not to do it stretched, hell to this day, I maintain a lot of that mentality. Of course, I'll always take proper widescreen implementation over stretched any day when it's available.
