L4T Lakka Switch - now with audio and Vulkan

Lakka Switch, L4T edition
I am proud to finally release the L4T version of Lakka Switch!
New kernel, new logo, new drivers, audio... everything is fresh and clean.

Did I mention Rayman 3 was full speed on Dolphin? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

General system updates
  • New Linux kernel and underlying operating system, based on Linux4Tegra and Jetson Nano drivers
    • mainline kernel has been deprecated
    • system features should now be on par with the L4T Ubuntu distribution, except for dock support
    • Bluetooth was lost in the battle and needs some rest to come back stronger
  • aarch64 is now the default and mainly supported architecture
    • arm has been deprecated since L4T doesn't support it
  • New logo made with the help of jaames and the R:S community
New features and improvements
  • Audio now works through the internal speakers and headphones
  • The new GPU driver supports both Vulkan and OpenGL
  • RAM is now locked at full speed (1600Mhz), was 800MHz before
  • The system is now way more stable and should boot for everyone with a decent SD card (no more black screen of death)
  • RetroArch has been updated to add menu widgets (fancy onscreen notifications)
  • Overclock profiles have been updated :
    • Renamed all profiles
    • Added more overclock profiles
    • Added underclock profiles
New cores
  • mupen64plus-next (N64 emulator)
    • The core is full speed, even on aarch64 thanks to the new dynarec
    • Includes the updated version of the GlideN renderer
  • picodrive (various Sega consoles)
    • The core replaces Genesis Plus GX (Game Gear support has been dropped)
  • Beetle PSX HW (PSX emulator with OpenGL and Vulkan renderer)
    • The core performs worse than PCSX ReARMed for now, even with Vulkan
  • reicast (Dreamcast emulator)
    • The core is full speed on all commercial games, no visual glitches
    • The OIT renderer works (better accuracy), speed is still good on 1x resolution
    • The core needs the Dreamcast BIOS files to be placed in /lakka/storage/system/DC
    • WinCE games are currently not supported - there is a WinCE version of the reicast core in the works but the aarch64 dynarec is too slow for the games to be playable (for now)
  • Yaba Sanshiro (Saturn emulator)
    • The core is full speed on all commercial games
    • Yabause and Kronos were also added but both perform worse than Yaba Sanshiro
  • theodore (Thomson MO/TO emulator)
Updated cores
  • Dolphin : Vulkan support
    • With Vulkan, Dolphin runs decently - some games are playable, some are full speed... see for yourself, try it and experiment with different games and settings!
  • PCSX ReARMed : Switch optimizations and CHD support
  • PPSSPP : doesn't crash anymore when closing content
Removed cores
  • mupen64plus
  • parallel-n64
  • Genesis Plus GX
  • Ishiiruka
    • It might come back once the core is updated with the (beta) Vulkan renderer
Credits
  • Kernel and drivers work: NVIDIA, switchroot team (especially ByLaws and langerhans)
  • Lakka Switch work: natinusala and plaidman
  • RetroArch, original Lakka distribution: libretro team
  • mupen64plus-next: Gillou and m4xw
  • PCSX ReARMed: Switch optimizations by m4xw, CHD support by aliaspider
  • Dolphin core: aliaspider
  • reicast core: flyinghead

The Lakka Switch website has been updated with the new version: https://lakka-switch.github.io/documentation/

Please note that you can't dual boot Ubuntu and Lakka Switch for now (it will always boot Ubuntu).

You might have to dump your joy cons in Hekate for them to work properly between Lakka and HOS -- you can do this from Nyx menu or something similar (bottom left corner in the main screen). Don't have a pro controller myself, so not sure how, but it should be supported -- try to look for somewhere where it says something about Bluetooth would be my guess.

As to resolution: you need to make a file
Code:
storage/dock-hotplug.conf
and put a resolution in it (e.g. 1280x720) your screen support. The maximum is 3840x2160@30, but note that there might be issues with 4k TVs and setting this resolution might not work

i really appreciate the info about res config. That really should be in a read me.

This thing could be so cool but has huge config issues.

Pro controller detected by bluetooth paired blah blah but no work. Will try the joy con thing but please read my post carefully. With a ps3 controller perfectly configured once in game in some cores the lakka build is still looking for joy con to be used?? i have this all recorded btw...

Yeah, controller profiles seem to be broken for now... They work, but lakka doesn't save them and doesn't automatically change devices when you plug/unplug. Also you can only control lakka menus from port 1 (it might or might not be changed soon) so you have to remap every time when you want to use something other than joycons as p1. I'd suggest to stick to joycons for now, tho for p2 its fine since you can navigate menus as p1, so just set it up and map it how you want in port 2 and play. I tested my ds4, 8bitdo and old arcade stick for x360/pc (all wired) and they all worked, but it was a pain in the ass to use them as p1.

ok so i am not crazy thanks for confirming..well for me it is bummer since once i take joycon off switch then i have no joy but i will tinker some more... on my 4k tv 1920x1080@60 does not work in the conf either will try other settings i guess...

Happy to help! I didn't address the rest of the things in your post as I didn't know what to suggest to make stuff work, sorry about that. As to the resolution: Not sure exactly on the format on the resolution in the file -- first figure I quoted is straight from the discord, and the last one at well, but I'm not sure if anything specific is needed for e.g. configuring fps. You could always try to ask in the discord channel if you can't make it work

Tested a lot of games and the simpsons hit and run is running very well!

hm, last time i checked Hit and Run like a week ago it ran terribly with a lot of slowdowns and stuttering esp while driving...I tested with 1.8 cpu and vulkan. Has it really improved that much? That's awesome.

I've just tested it again with lakka 3.1, vulkan and 1.8 OC and it still runs A LOT worse than what's shown in your vid. Is there some specific setting or maybe a patch or something?

I posted a bit more detail in the discord but the cliff's notes version here for anybody else coming here:
  • threaded video on
  • vsync off
  • vulkan video driver
  • OC cpu to 1.8, gpu to 460
  • core options - cpu clock speed: 30-40%
that will get you "fullspeed" though the low core cpu speed will give you a small frameskip effect to bring you back to full speed video and audio. Again, I go into a bit more detail on what the settings do in the discord channel.

Could you please post a link to the discord channel? Thanks for your advice.

Shader compilation mode: a-sync Skip Rendering

In game switch sound to Mono.

Are there any major differences between lakka and standalone retroarch in addition to the vulkan support of lakka?

Its been mentioned 100 times already... Dolphin core, decent Saturn emulation, better Dreamcast compatibility, better PSX emulation, better/more stable N64, arguably better PSP, some other stuff probably that i just don't use.

Yeah, i asked the same question in discord a while ago, but got no response. I guess its switch specific (for both HOS and Lakka) cause i can't reproduce it on win10 Flycast nor on Android. The are 2 solutions (kinda): use integer scaling and manually adjust the screen ratio literally pixel by pixel or just play the arcade version, it runs with no issues using FBNeo.

Delete the storage folder and launch lakka again, it will rebuild everything. You can backup the folders that you need like playlists and remaps etc.
