Hi. I picked up a slim PS3 today for dirt cheap and was happy to see that it had unauthorized apps meaning that it has been CFW'd. However I do not know with which CFW, nor how it was done, and I have one major issue: none of the apps actually boot up (they just quit when launched with "an error has occurred" meaning CFW patches are not applied?) and there's no software like package manager to actually load into and be able to install PKG with.

The system setting says FW 4.80 though an app states PSN Spoof 4.20 which also does not make much sense to me at all. I've uploaded pics of the apps installed and system info here:

I have not yet connected it to my internet as I do not know the next steps to get this into a full CFW setup that I can happily use.
As for the model of the system itself, it is a CECH-2503B, and is a slim PS3 with a front-load disc (not the one that has the slide-tray).

Please give pointers and help to get this up to scratch and sorted, thanks :)

For what I can tell, the previous owner used this PS3 with an old CFW (probably < 4.20) and the stopped using it. He decided to update it before selling it but forgot to uninstall old apps so you are on 4.80 OFW.

As for hacking it, you have two possibilities:
- If your PS3 is CFW compatible (you can check that by using minVer, 3.56 and lower is compatible), use PS3Xploit and install any CFW (Evilnat 4.88 is a good choice)
- If it's not, follow a tutorial on how to use HEN

MinVer states 3.40 so I should be good for CFW. Is it safe to factory reset the PS3 in some way to remove everything installed and have a clean OFW before running ps3xploit or should I just go ahead and do it straight from the setup I have now? Thanks for the reply too, I wouldn't have known where to even start lmao

EDIT: Been trying to boot up PS3Xploit, it loads up the page but then freezes the entire system after a few seconds. I've tried clearing cache/cookies and set the date/time correct but makes no difference - would this be caused by the system already having been CFW'd at all and definitely needs a complete system reset?

EDIT2: Factory reset the system from within recovery mode and can now boot ps3xploit. However after the flash patch is loaded, I cannot get the CFW update to install. I downloaded Evilnat 4.88 and updating via storage, it detects the update but gets to 70% copying and then states the data is corrupted. I've tried redownloading, using different USB, but can't work out how to get it to install.. System is still OFW 4.80, maybe that's part of the issue? Should I update it?

I tried finding rebug 4.80 (I've used rebug on my old phat PS3 when I had it so it's the one I'm most familiar with) but I can't even find download links for it and unaware of any other CFW for 4.80. Suggestions?

The first time I hacked a PS3 using ps3xploit I had the same issue, reinstall HFW 4.88 (install it twice to make sure) and re-run the flash patch, it should then work without issue

Go straight to Evilnat 4.88 CFW - IS most up to date.

Sorted it I think. Turns out I was only *loading* the patch, and not actually *patching* the patch. In the process of doing it now, silly me lmao

EDIT: Fully installed Evilnat 4.88 with no issue now. Up and running!
What are the most recommended stuff to put on it in terms of tools/homebrew?

I use webMan Mod and Irisman to play all my games installed either on my PS3 or on an external HDD with iso games.
I also use Movian to watch movies.

And remember that you should never connect to PSN on your hacked PS3 if you don't take protection measure.
If you want to login to PSN, firstly use a secondary account (a ban on the PS3 is also a ban on other consoles: PS4/PS5) and clear history/disable syscalls before logging in (for example by using R2+Triangle shortcut with webMan)

I'm aware of not going online etc etc, I don't even have PSN signed in and I'm not dumb enough to use my PS4 account on a hacked console XD

Thanks for all the suggestions, I got webman just for now since I won't be using it for movies or anything so really it's the only thing I need, apart from wanting retroarch maybe but the site seems to be dead in terms of the PS3 version. Not really an issue since I have it on steam anyway.
