A new 2D Metroid game is in development, titled Metroid Dread

The first original 2D Metroid game in 19 years has just been unveiled. Nintendo has shown the initial footage for Metroid Dread, which features traditional Metroid gameplay elements, as well as a general horror vibe, robots, and exploration. The game will be launching later this year, on October 8th, for the Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, Metroid Prime 4 is still in development, but had no updates to show at this year's E3.

Biggest hype I've had for a game in years. Been waiting for a Fusion sequel since forever! I wasn't expecting that they would ever do it. Pleasantly surprised, Nintendo. Keep it up.
I like the look of the new suit, too. Aren't blue and white the colors of the Federation? Hmm, I always thought she would be being hunted by them after the events of Fusion. Anyhow, I'm already halfway through beating Fusion again, and I may play it a few more times in anticipation. It is one of my favorite games, like, ever. I know most people wanted Prime 4, but heck, this is what I wanted. *Sniffle*

Finally! a metrid game for switch!
thank you nintendo for this!

this is a must have/buy.

the switch didn't have a metriod game yet,
it has a zelda game(s), mario, megaman, yoshi, kirby, pokemon(s)
but no metriod game for switch,
until dread was annoced.
it looks awesome.
can't wait for this in 5 months time :)

that E.M.I casing is awesome and super scary at the same time kinda like how in fusion, SR3800 samus
cased you aroundin the one section, and if it got you, you died instantly.
this is kinda that, you have no way of killing it, so you must run away. good gameplay and mechs :)
eventually, you'll be able to kill EMI's in one shot, but until then run, run, run samus!

mecury steam were the guys who made castlevania lords of shadow series on ps3,
so the game should be good.

I also hope this has the scan pulse. I know a lot of people hate it, as well as other features in other Metroid games, because it makes the game easier and takes away exploration, but not for me. Even with the scan pulse, I still explored every corner in Samus Returns. And I played it twice, on normal and fusion modes.

if that was the case nintendo wouldnt call it themselves metroid 5, for them all 2d metroids is one thing and 3d ones is another.
It's funny how you still want to be right even when everyone tells you how you are wrong
It's all in the same universe. There's only Other M which is kinda ignored because it contradicts some stuff because Sakamoto didn't felt like acknowledging the Prime games at the time (+ other plot stuff that is really really dumb)
Otherwise, all in the same universe. It's like complaining that Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear and Metal Gear Rising aren't numbered the same even if they take place in the same universe.

well for nintendo prime series and other m are more of spin offs so they don consider them main games, the main story flows perfectly without them.

if nintendo totaly acknowledge the prime series as main metroid plot entries they wouldnt call this metroid 5 but rather call it metroid 9.

a spin off can be in the same universe and still be totally ignored for the main series continuity.

Nintendo does acknowledge the Prime series tho ?
They don't have to call it Metroid 9 wtf lmao, it wouldn't make any sense
Super Metroid is Metroid 3, do you think because a whole trilogy took place between 1 and 2 after it's release, it should suddenly change it's name to Metroid 6 ? It wouldn't make any sense and it would be confusing as fuck.

It has always been like that and it's really not complicated. Games that move the story forward get a number, that's how it always has been, I really don't see where is the problem lmao

Like, if you want to complain about confusing numbers I guess you could talk about Kingdom Hearts, but not Metroid lol

absolutely ecstatic to see Metroid come back for both Prime 4 and Dread. Loving the new suit right after Fusion and it's a neat change to see that it's more of a sterile, scientific lab/industrial "dread" rather than the colorful landscapes and environments we've had in other Metroids.
