Yes and no. You'll need to use Popstarter, which doesn't work with every game and a lot of games have issues. Look up a compatibility list to get a better idea if it will suit your needs.

The only way to get PS1 backup compatibility on par with using retail discs is to install a mod chip that's compatible with PS1 games. Maybe someone else can explain the technical reasons for this. EDIT: Read the other posts below.

I have a HDD for PS2 fat and it's it possible to play PS1 on PS2?
Can I download PS1 games and transfer it to HDD alongside PS2 games.
Yes, there's a PS1 emulator for the PS2 called POPStarter that lets you play them with OPL. The games need to be in a certain format; .bin and .cue pairs wont work. Also, the compatibility isn't great, but at least it lets you play some games from the internal HDD. Another recent way is via the MechaPwn exploit -- with certain versions of the PS2, you can the mechacon and essentially make your PS2 region free, and lets you play backups of your PS1 games on disc. I haven't played around with this much though, so I can't give you any more help than that

In addition, I've read that Tonyhax also works on certain PS2 models such as PAL/NA <=3900.

^ this.
If you've got a PS2 that's EU or NA, and a model number below 3900X, and a means of burning disks, tonyhax is an awesome option.
I love it, as it finally gives me the option of running my legit PS1 imports on my PS2 - the fact that it also allows booting burned media is a great bonus.
Compatability seems to be largely dependent on the model of your PS2 and the entrypoint game you use, but with the current version of Tonyhax, my 39003 PS2, and Cool Boarders 4 entrypoint, I'm yet to find anything that won't run.

In short; Fat PS2 with FreeHDboot, OPL booting PS2 from HD, Tonyhax for PS1 loading = awesome!

What version of FMCB are you using? The latest 1.966 should have a version of uLaunchELF that should be able to properly handle your drive. You don't need to hunt down any special 2TB version of uLaunchELF as the latest is always distributed with the latest version of FMCB.

Was your drive taken directly from the previous PS2? Or did you re-use the drive for non-PS2 purposes before you tried to re-format?

Huh? What are you replying to? OP doesn't mention reformatting HD - they were simply asking about installing PS1 ISO's alongside PS2 ISO's.

Strange... I cannot make sense of my own post, either :-) I think I was replying to another thread but note sure how my reply was pinned to this thread. My apologies.

Yes that's right but don't worry i can play PS1 ISO's on computer

Seriously, check Tonyhax if your PS2 fat isn't a 50000 series model and isn't a Japanese model. It should work to allow you to play burned PS1 discs using the PS1 hardware that was in the PS2 fats before the 50000 series.
