Intellivision announces new casual-targeted console

Amico_VintageWoodgrain_Rounded.png

Intellivision is finally ready to re-enter the console market with the Intellivision Amico. Named after the Italian word for friend, the Amico is a "really simple, fun party machine" focused on ease of use and couch multiplayer. Intellivision is not competing directly with industry titans like Sony or Microsoft, seeing itself as more complimentary to them, and instead is targeting non-gamers and children. The main feature of the Amico is its unique controller, which features a small touchscreen on the top half and a click wheel on the bottom half, that features 64 pressure-sensitive inputs (some other buttons can be seen on the side of the controller in the trailer, but they aren't referenced and likely aren't used for gameplay). Every game for the Amico will be designed around this controller, whether they're remakes of classic Atari and Intellivision titles or new titles designed specifically for the Amico. Some of the new titles demonstrated included an edutainment Sesame Street game, a few sports or board games, a game called Dolphin Quest that's being created by the original Ecco the Dolphin team, and a quick peek of the brand new Earthworm Jim title, also being created by its original team. In accordance with the focus on smaller titles, digital games will cost $9.99 or less, while physical titles will be $19.99 or less. Also, seemingly because of its younger target audience, controversial monetization tools like microtransactions and loot boxes will be strictly forbidden on the platform.

The Amico will be available on the 10th of October, 2021. The standard black and white options will retail for $249.99, while the woodgrain option will cost $279.99.

So sad to see all these negative responses.
Most, if not all, people on this website are not the target audience.
That doesn't mean no one is buying it or will enjoy it.

Let's just wait and see, but to be honest, I really love seeing another console.
It's not that it's just a box that plays games. They actually put their heart and soul in.
And I think that already justifies it's existence.

Also taking you controller with you and then being able to access all your games is great!

First I thought "On no, not another stupid console no one cares about, what a waste of materials." but after watching the whole video I have to admit it looks fun to have as a casual console laying around when non-core-gamers visit my house.
Dunno if I'd really buy it though. Depends on prices for console and each single game.
But it's not that bad honestly.
its very hard to justify playing 250$ for a console whose only porpose is to play some very simple party games imo

just get a wii and some of its 30+ party games and your much better served lol

"Intellivision announces new casual targeted console" ...except they announced it literally years ago... and it's not Intellivision, it's the people that bought the rights to the name.
I initially thought it was a cool idea, but the way it's progressed has been barely any better than the 'new' Atari system.
There was also some extremely unfavourable first "hands on" impressions of the system and the games from an IGN Middle East correspondent (although it seems that they retroactively 'sanitised' their review after butthurt from the man behind the product).
Wasted opportunity.

The reply's are negative because it's a piece of junk - how many game developers make games for it? You can buy a switch or another decent console for the same price & get loads of AAA games.

Also who are the target audience? Old age pensioners or people that don't have any idea about gaming?

Some poor kid would get this for xmas from their great grandmother that thought she was buying something good.....imagine the disappointment on the kids and grandmothers face as he/she tried to pretend they loved it.

If someone gave me this as a gift - I would thank them for the thought, then tell them to return it and get their money back.

what is the target audience? people who will see this on store and wait let me just waste 250$? also you need to buy games 10$ digital/20$ physical so the games will be at best multiplayer crappy party games with hi scores, seriously i fail to see the target audience, nostalgic people would want to play the games it came with originally, but they just turned all games into 4 player party stuff, the new games will be like android games or worse since they will all again be multiplayer minigames and cost at most 10$ so the games arent going to be very deep at all for that price range.

so nostalgic people wont get and the causal gamer wants more than 5 minutes party games to put up front 250$ plus games lol.

also if you and your friend own this i would be very surprised lol because the whole carrying the controller to another console lets you access games, they already know that no one will have family or friends owning this dump lol so its a useless feature.

I had an Intellivision 40 years ago. It was the best video gaming system at that time. My favorite games were Space Armada and Atlantis.

This is for the people who are considering a second Switch. I imagine this doing better than Ouya.

This thing was announced and shown off like two years ago. Why is this article written like it was barely announced and why are so many people in the comments unaware of it's existence?

I agree that the price is just too much.
But this is a new player in the console market, even though they released consoles before.
That was like 40 years ago though, so a lot has changed.
It's not easy or cheap to release new hardware.
I think the price is this high because otherwise they would just lose money or lose too much money.
The silicon shortage also isn't helping.
And if I remembered correctly, the developers of Bit.Trip actually made a game for the system.

The price just kills it, but if it was cheaper I wouldn't see the problem with such a system being given to kids below 8 years.
It would be a good "my first game console" system in my opinion.
And you probably get some mothers and fathers who don't know anything about games to play along with them.
