A new 2D Metroid game is in development, titled Metroid Dread

The first original 2D Metroid game in 19 years has just been unveiled. Nintendo has shown the initial footage for Metroid Dread, which features traditional Metroid gameplay elements, as well as a general horror vibe, robots, and exploration. The game will be launching later this year, on October 8th, for the Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, Metroid Prime 4 is still in development, but had no updates to show at this year's E3.

I've beaten every Metroid, except the Pinball game (not sure if possible to beat) and Federation Force which is not a real Metroid so uh yeah I'll be getting this.

I love the "horror" (horror-lite) DREAD aspect of this game. I'm going to play Samus Returns in preparation for this.

I think the 3ds castlevania was great for what it was. the lord of shadows series was kind of a god of war ripoff. the 3ds game combined that with lesser metroidvania elements. lord of shadows 2 was bad though, the dev team got a really toxic atmosphere, I wonder if something changed since then.
I haven't finished it, of course people can still find enjoyment in it.
I quit at the point where you get some invincibility magic and there are acid waterfalls, you just have to:
hold the button, run through... then wait until your magic replenishes
hold the button, run through... then wait until your magic replenishes
hold the button, run through... then wait until your magic replenishes
That made me quit immediately, designing a part like this had me think the devs have no idea about fun. And it was just holding left through all these parts. Or is that one part really an exception and the gamedesign gets better at later parts?
The DS/GBA titles are very solid games in comparison.
Mh i've heard the news about lord of shadows2, that really sucks for everyone .3.

Please don't have the timed attack thing from Samus Returns.

it is in the game, sadly (a saw for a second in the trailer)

It looks like it can be used as an attack and not just a defense though which would be a big improvement.

I like Samus Returns, but the block and counter mechanism got old.
I was thinking the same thing at first, almost to the point of hoping it wouldn't be MercurySteam. I actually do like Samus Returns too, but this feauture felt out of place to me throughout the game. I can live with it however and am still happy to have Metroid as this rather than nothing.

The treehouse gameplay segment made it seem like the counter is now a proper attack and can be performed while running, too, without the need to wait for the enemy to attack first. Presumably some enemies won't be able to be bitch slapped into death directly but chances are weaker enemies can reliable be killed with one or two slaps.

if that was the case nintendo wouldnt call it themselves metroid 5, for them all 2d metroids is one thing and 3d ones is another.

They're all in the same universe but separate stories from the same character. Metroid Prime is it's own story interjected in-between Metroid 1 and Metroid 2 with no (direct) consequences on the "original" Metroid story spanning from Metroid Zero Mission (1), over Metroid Samus Returns (2), Super Metroid (3), Metroid Fusion (4) and now Metroid Dread (5).

They could have called the Prime series something like "Metroid Prime: Samus Sidestories with phozon" to help make the distinction more clear but didn't.

i hope it wont be as bad as samus returns was.
first of all music in samus returns was borring and uninteresting.
a lot of gimmicky movesto impress a player instead of genuine gameplay.
30fps on 3ds (i hope dread will be solid 60fps)
Also it liiks kinda plasticky.
As for sakamoto, hemade other m which was full of action moves, scenes and more stylish than practical. im afraid dread will follow other m visual and gameplay style, combined with samus returns style.
not very strong candidates for a metroid.
scan pulse wasnt a good idea it makes gameplay way easier.

As a fan im way excited, but im afraid because of experience. I guess after i play it ill see.

But i have some bad vibes.

Also suit looks weird again....whatever.

Did mercury steam worked on this game?
They are not very god for metroid imo.
and team ninja shouldnt work on metroid also.
i dont like their "signatures".
retro and nintendo r&d made best metroid.

this game better be good, its a sequel of one of my favorite games, fusion!!!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

what annoyed me also was the meele attack...the MOST gimmicky and annoying move in game!
i gate gimmicks and fluid motions like sliding. Whatever. i just hope it wont be need to use it much or overuse it.
Its better to have normal move that you can use skillfully reather tan game doing things for you with button press.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

When Metroid 4 (fusion) came out i was just bearly 1 year old! :rofl2:
Im very happy Ninty didnt gave up on 2d Metroid

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Yeah, that would be horrible. I hope they give metroid 5 a real chance of succeeding
i really hope so to

FF is a real metroid just a spinoff.

Pinball can be beaten and has an ending, though it loops and lets you keep going for more points afterwards. It's pretty fun too, would recommend trying it out.
