Intellivision announces new casual-targeted console

Intellivision is finally ready to re-enter the console market with the Intellivision Amico. Named after the Italian word for friend, the Amico is a "really simple, fun party machine" focused on ease of use and couch multiplayer. Intellivision is not competing directly with industry titans like Sony or Microsoft, seeing itself as more complimentary to them, and instead is targeting non-gamers and children. The main feature of the Amico is its unique controller, which features a small touchscreen on the top half and a click wheel on the bottom half, that features 64 pressure-sensitive inputs (some other buttons can be seen on the side of the controller in the trailer, but they aren't referenced and likely aren't used for gameplay). Every game for the Amico will be designed around this controller, whether they're remakes of classic Atari and Intellivision titles or new titles designed specifically for the Amico. Some of the new titles demonstrated included an edutainment Sesame Street game, a few sports or board games, a game called Dolphin Quest that's being created by the original Ecco the Dolphin team, and a quick peek of the brand new Earthworm Jim title, also being created by its original team. In accordance with the focus on smaller titles, digital games will cost $9.99 or less, while physical titles will be $19.99 or less. Also, seemingly because of its younger target audience, controversial monetization tools like microtransactions and loot boxes will be strictly forbidden on the platform.

The Amico will be available on the 10th of October, 2021. The standard black and white options will retail for $249.99, while the woodgrain option will cost $279.99.

Hmmm, where have I seen those controllers before? ... View attachment 267019

Hey now, don't knock the Zune30. It was a great player (I still have one, but don't use it anymore)

But as for the controllers, it's supposed to be a throwback to the original Intellivision controller. Maybe Zune unconsciously copied that.

Also someone mentioned Colecovision ... that was a competitior of Intellivision. George Plimpton will stir in his grave for that.

I'm glad your mother is proud of you, Tommy; so am I after watching just one minute of this YouTube.

I wasn't part of the Intellivision Generation, but they chose the right Spokesperson.
I want this to succeed just so that his mother can be even prouder.

Wasn't this announced about 3 or 4 years ago?

Clearly it wasn't ready for a reveal back then, but I could have sworn there was a press release or something that claimed it would have "the best 2D graphics available", and we all had a good chuckle. Then Earthworm Jim crash-landed on a beach, ran to the right, then ran to the left.

If this thing = that thing, then wow, I guess it's nice to know they didn't give up on it. I hope they've spent that time building some decent developer partnerships.

You could buy this for the rare moments you want to lure a non-gamer friend into a video game...or you could fire up Clubhouse Games, Mario Kart, or just open up a physical deck of cards.

This whole thing always seemed like a scheme to gather funds from investors, string them along for a few years, then release a half-baked product before splitting.

so they made a console to play solely shitty party games? lol also they are trying to market it like the wii lol with the family playing fun games on the tv. but heck wii sports beats any game ever shown here, this looks like those independents party games shovelware that the wii had.

First I thought "On no, not another stupid console no one cares about, what a waste of materials." but after watching the whole video I have to admit it looks fun to have as a casual console laying around when non-core-gamers visit my house.
Dunno if I'd really buy it though. Depends on prices for console and each single game.
But it's not that bad honestly.

Isn't this the eightieth time we've heard someone talk about an "Amico" console? Price seems high for something with such a lackluster lineup, but.. I must say I'm curious.

Hmm...it's not as cringy as I feared it would. But for that price you can get a switch lite. And...while I THINK you can have fun with this, I absolutely KNOW you can have fun with a switch.

So...sorry, but there's really no competition for this price range.
