Intellivision announces new casual-targeted console

Intellivision is finally ready to re-enter the console market with the Intellivision Amico. Named after the Italian word for friend, the Amico is a "really simple, fun party machine" focused on ease of use and couch multiplayer. Intellivision is not competing directly with industry titans like Sony or Microsoft, seeing itself as more complimentary to them, and instead is targeting non-gamers and children. The main feature of the Amico is its unique controller, which features a small touchscreen on the top half and a click wheel on the bottom half, that features 64 pressure-sensitive inputs (some other buttons can be seen on the side of the controller in the trailer, but they aren't referenced and likely aren't used for gameplay). Every game for the Amico will be designed around this controller, whether they're remakes of classic Atari and Intellivision titles or new titles designed specifically for the Amico. Some of the new titles demonstrated included an edutainment Sesame Street game, a few sports or board games, a game called Dolphin Quest that's being created by the original Ecco the Dolphin team, and a quick peek of the brand new Earthworm Jim title, also being created by its original team. In accordance with the focus on smaller titles, digital games will cost $9.99 or less, while physical titles will be $19.99 or less. Also, seemingly because of its younger target audience, controversial monetization tools like microtransactions and loot boxes will be strictly forbidden on the platform.

The Amico will be available on the 10th of October, 2021. The standard black and white options will retail for $249.99, while the woodgrain option will cost $279.99.

This looks pretty awesome ngl, but I think the marketing is going to kill it. A "party machine"? seriously? At least we're nearing the end of this Covid bullshit, but the idea of pulling out an Amico at a party does not sound appealing at all (IMO).

The games themselves look really good though, and that controller, while a bit aesthetically bland, looks like it could be used in a lot of fun and creative ways. I would love to get my hands on one.

However, it seems like they're not targeting any demographic in particular. He talked about being a kid and playing couch co-op with your friends, pulling it out at a party, then they showed a photo of two old people screaming with a controller in their hands. The line-up of games seems to have a lot of different franchises but (at least based on the video), it looks like they're all (or mostly) arcade-style titles. That is, short games that you pick up and play for a few minutes. That's an outdated concept IMO (even mobile games have progression systems), and while they probably can be a lot of fun, I doubt it's going to help sell units.

I think they should focus on larger games. Maybe not a Breath of the Wild, but something players can dedicate a good amount of time to. That new Earthworm Jim for example would be great.

But if it's just a system with a bunch of arcade games, $250 is a lot of money. History has already shown that home console gamers don't like arcade games.

This was announced 3 years ago. The goal of the console is to just play games. No always online requirement, no massive updates, just games. They have several exclusive games from veteran developers from the Snes/MD era. Also some of the original Earthworm Jim team is working on Earthworm Jim 4. Pricing will kill it along with unavailability due to semiconductor shortages.

Casual gamers play on mobile...
Should cost £99.99 at the most, way over priced.
I think these are right on the nose. I doubt this console will "make it" for these very reasons. The appeal is pretty niche... I could see some parents of young kids taking interest as a way to introduce their kids to gaming in a family-friendly way. But then why wouldn't you just get a Switch so you can enjoy high quality games for yourself and buy some of the cheap party games on the eShop?

I have to give them some credit though. Clearly they knew the launch would be tough and they had to work in a lot of partnerships if they hoped to make it a success. Bringing back loved classics with new multiplayer twists, some original games, and pack-in games make shows that they really pushed to make sure there is content. (Better than Atari did with the VCS! *cough cough*) I also like the idea of tying game licenses to the controllers. The focus on couch co-op with 2 included controllers is a good idea, and NO DLC or IAP also makes sense in this context.

Fascinating how they included a screen on the controllers, reminiscent of the Dreamcast. That part made me smile a bit.

Sadly, I just don't see a place for it in a world where people have to pay their hard-earned money for this thing. It's too niche and the Switch is already better in nearly every way for casual gaming on a dedicated console (as opposed to a phone), also with 2 controllers included. Just because you say you aren't competing with the rest of the market doesn't mean your potential customers will agree, and they're the ones you have to convince it's something special.

Hopefully we'll be able to emulate Earthworm Jim on a real console.

they really talk about online score leaderboards like its a groundbreaking, never heard of before feature

in all honesty tho the thing looks kinda fun but sucks that it wont really get anywhere with that kinda library. it looks like the wii's shovelware, as if they tried to make 50 games in 3 months. clearly a quantity over quality issue.

Open the platform and allow users to create games without the hassle of hacking the console and this product might rocket up.

yeah that'd be an amazing idea. i think their main issue is how bad the library looks, but if it gets decent homebrew support (or who knows maybe some actual real devs might tap into it), it might actually do decent.

Wow this is really old school lol...that's pretty bold of them to be doing this type of thing, yet at the same time interesting; I have no problems with these types of games, its just I am afraid that it may not be my cup of tea on whatever the game it maybe annnd the fact that it may not sale to a point that they will lose hope on ever making another one which I don't want too if they will start making others, really reminds me of when I was a wee child :3 playing girly games hehe, they were games like this aimed at boys too.

Ugly and pricey. But the games look good at least. But I'm not seeing more than rehashes and lame cash grabs going their way from developers.
I'd like to see it become successful, but the price is asinine. and 10$ games won't make a lot of developers go their way.

Maybe Squenix with FF rereleases. And Capcom, with some Street Fighter collection.
But there will be indies there. And they'll also come to any other console.

I think it's cool, and I commend them on the initiative (with words only at the moment). The controller presents many opportunities for novel gameplay, and the games don't look bad. The "only" problem is to compete with the Switch and, to a lesser degree, mobile gaming.
