Rune Factory 4 Special coming to PS4, PC, and Xbox

After years of being a Nintendo exclusive, Rune Factory 4 is coming to new platforms. XSEED is bringing Rune Factory 4: Special, an enhanced version of the 2012 3DS game to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Steam PC.

Rune Factory 4 Special opens with a young man or woman falling from an airship and landing in the town of Selphia. Appointed the local regent by mistake, the hero is charged with protecting the town and bettering the lives of its people. As the newly appointed prince or princess, royal duties are fulfilled by issuing orders to help the town prosper, or by taking a more relaxed approach to governance by raising crops and helping townsfolk. Should some dungeon adventuring be on the day’s itinerary, a vast array of weapons along with magic can be crafted or bought for battle against dangerous foes—companions or friendly monsters can also join to aid the player during their travels. And, of course, there’s a huge cast of lovable townsfolk, including 12 potential suitors to woo and marry.
About

The curtain rises on a beautiful sunny day, as the hero tumbles from the heavens…

Luckily, a friendly dragon is there to break their fall. But, although uninjured, the hero can remember only their name. Under the auspices of the dragon Ventuswill, the hero comes to live in the local castle and, as a newly designated ruler, begins their life anew while developing the town, making difficult decisions, and cultivating the soil.

One day while out exploring their newfound home, the hero encounters a monstrous butterfly. However, after vanquishing this massive foe, a girl lies on the ground in its place. Why did the monster turn into a person? From these mysterious beginnings, the hero’s search for the truth will lead to a grand adventure that will shake the very foundations of their world…and draw them closer to the secret buried in their own lost memories.

Rune Factory 4 Special marks the return of the beloved entry in the popular Story of Seasons spinoff series that combines farming with dungeon adventuring, as the series makes its debut on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC with upgraded HD graphics, a new “Newlywed Mode,” and additional cut-scenes. In this standalone story, players choose to play as a male or female hero and will encounter a diverse cast of potential suitors and other loveable townsfolk. As the newly appointed prince or princess, you can fulfill your royal duties by issuing ordinances to help the town prosper, or take a more rural approach to governing by raising your own fruits and vegetables and helping townsfolk. Should some dungeon adventuring be on the day’s itinerary, you can craft or buy a vast array of swords, spears, and staves along with magic for battle against dangerous foes, or even bring along some companions or friendly monsters to aid you during your travels.

Sick. I wonder what this game will look like with mods. I'll have to retire the switch version after thousands of hours... (Also, explicit non-accidental confirmation of RF5 delay. Oh well.)

Glad to see this game being made available on more systems. Stil can't believe an almost 10 year old 3DS game would end up on a PS4 and Xbox One although that little character portrait animation in the trailer looks kinda off.

They redid them for the switch. That's why.

Finally. Everyone should be able to play this masterpiece.

But did they still keep the number 4? It would weird out a lots of people that way. But I would all for remake of the older game if they decided to go that direction.

That one has a Switch-only tag on the trailer.

for now.
is so good to see that BS "exclusivity" goes away, even if take months or years. i like RF games a lot, but im not going to buy a switch for only 2 or 3 games, when i can play an infinity of games on pc right now. better frames, customization, no resolution cap and so on. good time to be alive!

I suppose Rune Factory has appeared on non Nintendo systems in the past with Tides of Destiny also appearing on PS3. But still it's always felt like an unofficial Nintendo series, now that a core entry will be appearing outside of Nintendo, that feeling for the franchise is quickly disappearing. Ah well, at least the brand new one is Nintendo only (for the time being anyway...).

Actually, after watching the trailer I think I'd be just as well off playing the Switch version. Maybe RF5 will make better use of high-end hardware.
Stands to reason, Rune Factory 4 was originally a 3DS game. They didn't reinvent the wheel when they brought it to Switch, though they did add a fair amount of content. Rune Factory 5 is the entry that shows off what a modern console version of an entry in the series can look like.
