Got an unmodified Wii U from a friend just recently. I wonder what kind of CFW is possible since the eShop closed down last year and I have none of the required DS VC titles on hand.

No, Haxchi & cold boot haxchi (CBHC), actually are DS ROM.
you can't launch a DS ROM without a NDS emulator (the DS VC is the emulator).

I think there are now offline alternatives to put the console in patched mode, manually launch or even at coldboot. But you need extra bluetooth devices to emulate a wiimote for coldboot.

Too bad, that's what I expected. May be there will be another similar solution in the future without the need of a specific game or hardware.

if you have the browser channel, you can patch it to install a firmware patcher in it.
Then you just launch the browser the same way you launch haxchi every time you want CFW. (launch, wait, returns automatically to the patched main menu).
no game or hardware required, but you need the browser and not messing up the install (or I think you'll need the coldboot bluetooth method to fix it)

I didn't follow the WiiU scenes for the past 2 years so I can't redirect you to the right place. but it should be there, somewhere on the forum :)

This will never be possible. Haxchi/CBHC uses a vulnerability from the ds emulator (hachihachi). How should you use it when you don't need to use the emulator? The only possible way is (as stated above) browser exploit+indexiine+mocha cfw. Or (sometime) in the future, aroma.

May be there are other vulnerabilities that haven't been discovered or used yet. We may or may not see different attempts in the future. We'll see...

OP, judging by your profile, you live in Germany. The Wii U eShop is certainly still running there, as far as I know. Did you try to connect?

the new vulnerability is called fst, and aroma uses it I believe. it can be put on anything including the recommended health and safety tile. however, it hasn't been released yet. I think fst can be installed now, but there's not a noob proof install method or something like that.

Well, well, well. Looks like WiiU scene isn't dead but possibly heading for some interesting times. I guess I'll have to start following how this develops.

Some people on the boards have been beta testing aroma. I'm not one of them though.

Nope! Got a notification that the eShop will be closed for Wii U and thus never tried to connect since mid 2020. Will try ASAP.
