I haven't used my Luma 3DS in a while and recently got back into updating it. I use an older R4 card to run my DS games. Usually I would use TWLoader to run the R4 card itself, then run the games. At some point I figured out how to make DSForward shortcuts for the games on the 3DS main menu. Much more convenient.

I've recently seen that TWLoader is no longer supported and updated by TWilight Menu? What is the main difference between the two? If my current method works, I would figure its safer to try to implement the same DS backup method on my friends 3DS, who I installed CFW for. Or is it better to look more into TWilight Menu and use that?

TWiLight Menu++ is much better at this point. Supports basically every NDS game, with only a few problems here and there, as well as recently gaining the ability to run DSiWare on 3DS and DSi consoles. There are a lot more features that have been implemented since the move from TWLoader to TWLMenu++, including things like GBARunner2 integration, several emulators for other consoles, and on-the-fly AP patching for DS games, just to name a few.
There's really no good reason to still use TWLoader at this point.

TWiLight Menu++ is so easy to install via Universal-Updater, that there's no reason to even doubt about using it. Switch to it ASAP, lots of nice features. Add TWPatcher, and you could play some NDS games on 16:10 for example or also enhance scaling.

I was able to implement Twilight Menu and am definitely impressed. Combined it with some DS Forwarders too for convenience. I used TWPatcher so that all the games auto boot into pixel perfect mode. If I install Twilight Menu from within a flashcart, would that give me all the benefits of Twlight plus the higher compatibility of a flashcart? It would some pros of either be lost ?
Edit - And about forcing DS games in 16:9. Wouldn’t that ruin the aspect ratio? And if not how do all games support it?

By installing TWLMenu++ on a flashcard, you'll have the option to use loaders like YSMenu or Wood to run the DS ROMs.
Running DSi-Enhanced games in DSi mode (set by default), as well as DSiWare, will have nds-bootstrap be used, as regular flashcard loaders cannot do so.

Most games that run with 3D graphics will contain cheat codes that squish the 3D image horizontally for more on the sides to be seen, and then the patched TWL_FIRM will stretch the top image so that the 3D image looks correct.

Despite the fact that TWiLight Menu++ Updater has been stubbed in its latest update, I still swear by using it (second-newest version, mind) over Universal Updater, as Universal just isn't as fast for it. (TWiLight Menu++ Updater is also more child-friendly... or it was until it got mothballed) Universal is nice for other stuff, mind.

Thanks for the reply and forgive my dumbness. So what you are saying is that using an R4 card, running Twilight Menu off the R4 card targeting DS games on the R4 card would enable me to get the full benefits of Twilight including DSi mode?

Yes. To get the full benefits, you need to enable both the SCFG access for Slot-1 option, as well as enable Slot-1 TWL touch option in TWLMenu++ Settings.
