Tencent shows off mock-up of its cloud gaming controller with interchangeable parts

Tencent has just wrapped up its annual conference, where it showed off a handful of new games heading to the mobile platform. Some of these reveals included Metal Slug Mobile, CrossFire HD, and Digimon: New Century. The most important announcement wasn't the set of games, but rather, the input device used to play said titles. Tencent has unveiled its new cloud gaming controller, revealing a mock-up of the concept, which features a gamepad that has a swappable face, letting you seamlessly switch between different types of layouts. One of the styles shown is a traditional, modern ABXY design with two flat circle pads, along with a round, X-shaped "d-pad", while the second option has a much more complex layout involving five circle pads, mimicking a type of layout frequently seen in mobiles games such as Diablo Immortal, Genshin Impact, or Tencent's own Honor of Kings. The controller will be a major part of the company's cloud gaming service, which will not only stream console games to players, but also mobile phone games. Since the gamepad will have modular parts, it helps it cater to both sides of the market in Tencent's homeland of China, which happens to have a major focus on mobile game experiences.

... If one were to study the rise of Asian IT Companies, they'd realise most of them did so on the back of National Pride.

In South East Asia, Ride-Sharing Companies Grab and GOJEK rose to prominence as being Services created by Local Talent catered to Locals; they sent Uber packing and practically told them to take their service back where the sun don't rise. The West.

Same formula, different outcome due to the fact Local Players are masters of Local Wisdom.

It's the same story for Alibaba, Tokopedia and Lazada; nobody here cares for Amazon nor partake in their bad Karma.
Here all the Local Companies don't monopolise Logistics, so everyone gets to eat. And then finish Number 2 in peace.

Nobody in the West heard of Tencent until they became giants.
They didn't need the Western Market nor Analysis to do it then, and they sure don't now after the embargo which, in all likelihood, boosted National Pride even more.

it kind of sucks because modular controllers are a great idea, but they almost never catch on

On paper they are a good idea, but the thing is that most developers will release games that use traditional controller schemes, so if the game you're playing doesn't support remapping inputs, the plates that have unique buttons become superfluous. Sure you could assign macros to those unused buttons, but most of the gaming population won't bother with that, and they will gravitate towards the more traditional looking plates. That leaves you with a controller that serves little purpose other than ease of repair, but considering how cheap and easy it is to replace most stuff in a controller by yourself, that point becomes pretty moot too. This kind of controllers will likely never catch on.

FUCK CLOUD GAMING this controller looks cool tho albeit kinda limited. Why is there no space set for a proper joystick on a full-sized controller?

also can someone please bring the trackball over to a controller already

I'm not interested in cloud gaming in general, but if they make one where the sticks are both on top and it isn't too expensive I might buy one just for PC use.

I still prefer having the hardware as there more things you can do other than gaming with high-end hardware so i will always have a high end pc

Sounds like Google, Facebook and apple are saints thus never collected your data, nor produced any ugly gaming devices LMFAO
You can atleast put mitigations against those.
Using anything Tencent related is just inviting them into your home.

Mock-ups are like concept art. It will take 3 years and end up being a bunch of full controllers with a single set of grips to change.

You can atleast put mitigations against those.

"Mitigations" is a good word for the illusion of control those options provide.

they are all SAME, the only difference is in the States, people are brainwashed to portray communist countries as threat, but ignoring that greedy pure capitalists dance with Satan, they are all just SAME, and you are blind to not see that.

As usual, good idea, possibly not so good execution and a really not good company.

I also hate and don't trust those either, and try as much as possible not to use any of them. The only one that I probably use is Google and that's only because they have their dirty mitts on a lot of stuff and there's no choice in certain ways.

Now that PlayStation did it, now others are doing it...I don't mind it at all, just ...question; isn't the whole changing the controllers look like this old? Or is it really new?
Anyway the controller looks cute tbh.

A lot of people I have spoken to notice a trend of things they say (spoken words, not those posted) magically translating into ads on Facebook. Most of them only know Tencent as one of the names on Call of Duty Mobile.
