Sony may be sued over limiting its digital game sales exclusively to the PlayStation Store

Sony-2018-19-FY-Results-01-Header.jpg

Sony is set to possibly face legal troubles, regarding how it handles digital game sales. A class-action lawsuit is in the process of being filed, attempting to take action against Sony's alleged monopoly over digital game sales on its platform. In 2019, the company stopped allowing retailers to sell digital vouchers of PlayStation Store titles, and according to the lawsuit, this means Sony can charge whatever it pleases for its games, potentially hurting consumers due to a lack of market competition.

Sony's monopoly allows it to charge supracompetitive prices for digital PlayStation games, which are significantly higher than their physical counterparts sold in a competitive retail market, and significantly higher than they would be in a competitive retail market for digital games.

The suit also alleges that there have been instances where consumers have had to pay 175% more for a digital copy than a physical one. For right now, the class-action lawsuit is only being proposed, and if it moves forward, it'll be filed in San Francisco, California, under the case of Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment, in the US District Court of Northern California.

yeah I was being a littler humorous :) I think I get it

the problem is that you can only buy digital games through sony/psn themselves (apparently)
unlike nintendo where you can buy digital games from other places - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VPR4K97

you could also do this with the wii u. I friended a code to a friend of tropical freeze on the wii u many years ago. I think it was through gamestop. it was around $60 from what I remember.

I'm all digital on the switch, just like I was with the wii u. I like how easy it is to buy from the store as well. I mostly buy from eshop online on my laptop, and the download is to sent to my primary switch. I then can download the game on my other two switches by going on the eshop and into the redownload section. when I tried to download from the psn store on the ps3, the first try went through for around $86. however, when I tried to use the store a second time, I got "an error has occurred." it wasn't the system, because it does the same thing on the pc when adding funds to my account. something is clearly wrong with their system, because this lasted 9 days (probably still doesn't work, I gave up). I've never had any trouble with Nintendo, so sony needs to get their shit together.

Why is that? Elaborate, please.
Not really interested in many of the exclusives and the Series X seems like a more appealing option. i have a bunch of digital games on my 360 that i want to be upscaled with better performance- games like Sonic Unleashed and Far Cry 2.
plus retroarch via dev mode is super appealing, and gamepass sounds like a really good deal.
all i want from a new playstation controller is for them to bring back the pressure sensitive buttons from the PS2 that worked well in a lot of games like GTA, and for them to standardize back pedals by just having them be integrated into the back of the Dualsense. instead what i got was a bunch of feely feely haptic bullshit that wasn't even close to what i had imagined from a 9th gen playstation controller. plus 70 dollar video games. i'll pass.

I understood that Nintendo of Europe also prohibited the sale of first-party game codes. Since it seems that most of them were the cause of scams.

Perfectly valid opinions. Although I'd personally scratch the last one off because they aren't all that price, and sales. Thanks for the response/clarifications.

Attacking Dualsense sounds like sour grape, I think it's the one thing that series X/S is sorely missing. Dev mode is nice. Game pass looks wonderful. Automatic frame rate upgrade is the one that PS5 is sorely missing. PS+ is better than XB Gold while PS Now is a joke on PS5. Have both PS4 and XBox one, last gen Sony won hands down. This gen I have PS5, wait and see on series X. Sounds like series X is doing better in backward compatibility. PS4 games on PS5 is a mix bag. Some works wonderfully on PS5 and some sadly play worst than on PS4.

While MS and Sony fights Nintendo is laughing all the way to the bank with Switch. The success of Switch probably far exceed Nintendo's expectation. Apple is probably waiting to eat all three's lunch. Time will tell.

I'll admit i was being hypocritical here but still i was pissed when the dualsense was revealed, especially with all the controller advancements we've made in the past 7 years. Sony themselves adopted these design changes like with how there was a back pedal accessory for the dualshock 4. it makes no sense and is kind of infuriating how sony purely focused on the haptic triggers and rumble rather than standardizing back pedals and bringing back pressure sensitive buttons. It's not sour grapes either, i don't have neither a PS5 or an XSX. i could get a PS5 if i wanted, seeing as how they're both the same price. It's just legitimately infuriating where after a whole generation of back pedals being included on every third party controller i see, they're not included with the 9th generation dualsense. and again they should bring back pressure sensitivity. if they're going to have haptic triggers that increase/decrease resistance depending on what weapon you're using, they should have fully pressure sensitive buttons.

Nothing is perfect. Xbox controller is very robust, my day one edition xbox one controller is still working, the support on PC is almost perfect except needing to hold the xbox button for 10 seconds to turn off. DualSense may have drift problem is disappointing and it is just a tad too heavy. Engineering is trade off, can't please every body, I am quite please with what Sony did with PS5 so far but there are many area they could do better.

My new PC has no disk drive so im forced to digital download my games.
... even if you were able to play "physical" pc games they'd still just hand you a key for the game on steam. even physical games are going digital. the "physical" version of fallout 76 didn't even come with a disk, it just gave you a code to download the game.

Then they aren't technically physical if they are just keys. Local stores sell digital games like that with a provided case or a key on the receipt. When it comes to consoles I like to keep my options open so im always going to get a disc version no matter what. So if i run out of HDD space on my ps5 which only had 800GB space (wtf was Sony thinking..) I can just delete the game with no worries b/c I wont need to rely on the psn to install it again if the internet or server is down. Just pop in the disc & continue playing its a small situational perk, but has a purpose. The point of physical is complete ownership thats important to lots of ppl if its an option

i think i've said it before and i'll say it again most of the upcoming games that are coming out for ps5 come out for ps4 except ratchet and clank of course but i'm not spending so much money on just one game for a system i don't know
Then you have to pay extra just to upgrade certain ps4 game to ps5. Although FF7 Remake will get a free upgrade when Intergrade DLC comes out next month - which is the main reason I got the ps5 anyway other than that I'll just play any ps4 game on my exploited ps4's

it feels a lot more natural this way. blame sega for releasing a 9th gen game in 2008
It's surreal for me because i've owned the game for years and put hours upon hours in it and my brain is just used to it running at like 2 fps
