Just another small update, though it's really more to say: Watch this space!

We recently crossed a pretty big progress number on both the first pass translation and first pass editing sides of the text. We still have a decent amount of text to go and a lot of editing to do in order to make sure everything is consistent and high-quality, and some dialogue that doesn't have text transcribed yet that we still have work to do on. Other backend things are coming along very nicely, a couple of surprise quality of life adjustments are being tested.

Our true announcement is on the horizon, though! This will include visuals, a first peek at some of the in-game content, and a bit of a breakdown about added features and what's going on behind the scenes to make this the very best patch we can put out. We'll have a full blog to properly discuss and share progress, and there's an additional announcement we'll be making alongside our big Destiny 2 dump. We're all getting excited (and a little impatient, admittedly!) to share what we've been working so hard in over the last couple of years. I know I speak for everyone working on the game when I thank everyone who has kept tabs on this thread, offered help and moral support. So much work has gone on for us to get where we are now—so just a little more patience, and I can promise we'll have a lot to show, and much, much more in the way of sufficient updates in just a few weeks' time, at most. We may not have an exact date, but we have ton to show—this project is very much so alive and moving at an incredible clip thanks to everyone's efforts.
please keep going guys , doing god's work

Amazing!? I just found this thread! I have been searching the Internet for years to see if anyone still trying to patch this game. So thankyou so much for the hard work! I own this game on psp but can't play it.
Once you guys complete your work will it be a simple eboot file to download onto custom firmware psp or ps vita ??

I don't have the specific details on the process handy right now since I am admittedly, not the most knowledgeable on the process—I'm working more on the translation/editing side, but I know it should be an easy enough process if you're running the game on native hardware with CFW installed. We'll definitely have more detailed instructions on exactly how to install the patch when the time comes, though, for sure!

I'm excited to finally be able to share this after so long! We were really shooting in the dark back in 2017 when we first decided we want to give this a go; we didn't even start on the project for a full year after that—and even now, a vast majority of our progress has happened in the last 7-10 months. But here's the teaser trailer for our patch!

We have a bunch more information on our blog post RIGHT HERE, which includes screencaps and an brief overview of some of our QoL features that have been implemented. We'll be using our blog to talk in much more detail about these features in the near future. For now... it's back to work, though!

Could you please answer my comment on that video? I'm really curious about it.

I think it would be fair to let the folks know that this video is actually edited. Really well edited though. Not only it's clear that the English font is not being rendered in-game, since this game (both PS2 and PSP versions) uses a bitmap font (not a vector one!), so it can never look that crisp even with the highest possible emulator upscaling (which is not applied anyway, as evidenced by the actuall in-game graphics)...

But also, the original Japanese text is still visible behind the added text overlays: While it's been pretty well removed in most cases, particularly at 1:32 is pretty vissible while fading-out.

Not saying the project is fake, but if anything, this video would make fans doubt as soon as they realize about these details I mentioned, specially after the uploader claims it's been recorded in-game, and I quote:

"All translated footage was captured in-game, and the patch will be playable on PSP hardware. We'll have a separate font typesetting available in the game's customization menu that is properly optimized for native PSP resolution!"

I'm curious as to how this is archieved, technically, could you please elaborate?

Kind regards,

~Sky

Thanks

It looks like our video editor already replied to the comment. Simply put, we aren't going to tell people the text is edited in because it's not--that would make us liars. I said in an earlier post in this thread that we were doing a lot of backend work to change the text rendering for readability. If you check our blog, we've also added a pixel font. The font in the trailer is for emulators and HD rendering, the pixel font is optimized for psp hardware and we've added interface options into the menu to give players the choice of which to use.

I would appreciate if you didn't make such bold accusations with absolutely no proof. When the text editing is further along, we'll be able to livestream and show it working in-game, which is how we captured the footage. However, we will not do so until the dialogue editing for the early portions of the game are sufficiently edited and polished.

EDIT: I don't know the specifics of how it works, I'm not a programmer. I don't know anything about how these things are done and I doubt that even if it was explained to me, I would be able to convey it. All I know it that things were completely reworked, the font was inserted at a higher resolution and there was some texture filtering, or something.

As for the timestamp you pointed out, I'm not at all seeing any Japanese (which is natural, considering there is no Japanese text in the build we're using; anything untranslated was not captured.

hwuvwdR.png

Here's the screenshot from 1:32, battle subtitles (which aren't even in the Japanese version, that's all text that's been inserted into the game.). The text has a blur and multiple renderings on it because that's what the game does when text moves on/off the screen. It does it at 1:33 with the text and the actual battle textures, too:

XnZPc3k.png

While I understand being wary and asking questions, I'm really not into the bad faith argument that we're misleading people. I have all of the raw footage we used for the trailer, captured directly from the game using PPSSPP and OBS. We'll be talking more about our processes in the future, but whether or not anyone chooses to believe or disbelieve us, the text in the game will look this crisp in the final patch; there's a reason we waited as long as we did to actually show anything, and it's because we wanted it to look as good as possible.

@straylize

You may not have gotten the intent of my comment, as in no way was to diminish the project's effort, or show bad faith against it (I know very well the project is feasible, as evidenced by posts from myself on this same board). On the contrary, I think it's fair for the gamers to know what to expect.

In some of the screenshots you shared it's visible how the original texture is behind an overlay. The one that you posted is indeed the case. Some of the original textures are already in English, as the game would have them. Other in Japanese. It's perhaps clearer here:

upload_2021-5-10_16-29-1.png

Notice the original low-res "CRITICAL HIT" texture, behind the edited one. Such high resolution graphics make no sense in the context of the game's engine, and hardware limitations of the original platforms.

Now if you tell me: "We didn't explicitly used a video editing software, but rather we used PPSSPP's texture memory injection features, so people can enjoy it better when using that specific setup". Then great, but my point essentially still stands, for the same fundamental reasons. Notice the following points:

1 - The game can be played on PS2, PSP, PSV/PSTV (using PSP's BC), PS3 (either by using a BC console with the PS2 version, or CFW/HEN/HAN for both the PS2 and PSP versions) and PPSSPP. These are platforms that many users waiting for your project rely on. Besides PPSSPP, which other will look as shown in the teaser? In my case, I've been clearing my PSP backlog on my PS3 HEN, where this game is perfecly playable in both internaly upscaled HD and stereoscopic 3D (if that makes any sense in this game, which I haven't tested). So, will the gameplay shown in this teaser be any similar to the experience I'll get from the projecton my setup?

2 - Related to the previous point, if this is a texture injection edit, not even PPSSPP will ever look like that, unless you carry over the corresponding texture pack. This might not be known, or dissappoint some players. There is nothing wrong with texture injection projects, but they are always presented as such. And this brings me to my next point:

3 - I hope you understand that resorting to a platform specific trick (like texture injection would be) is the best way to generate doubts about your project XD. For instance, if it's technically achievable, why using injected textures when reinserted ones can be used intead, looking as the engine intends?

* Because they look better...?
* Because the project didn't find a way to reinsert these, effectively affecting other platforms...?

Can you see the doubts? Don't get me wrong, I'm not accusing anyone of anything, just asking to please give fair expectations.
if on the other hand, there is some super-hardcore ASM reprogramming here to archieve that result only given the game's ISO... then by all means, I'd be the first one to like to hear about it. But again, given my experience with this engine, and the original platforms, it really seems to me that the trailer is kind of stretching expectation either by video edition or real time external hacks.

But hey, that's the good things of these forums, one can talk technically ;)

Thanks and regards,

~Sky

I'll just make a tl;dr for the people who were lazy to read whatever @SkyBladeCloud just said up there:

He's claiming that the video is edited because he doesn't understand what's possible or not and he's somehow trying to get explanations because he feels entitled to an answer because he used to be relevant 10 years ago.

short answer: It'll look like that because of some heavy modification of the text rendering routine that LostTemplar implemented. And the fact that there's a low res font in the menu for you to choose now is to circumvent the fact that the hi-res version might look horrendous on a small screen like the PSP.

So please everyone, just wait for it and you'll see. No need to listen to some people claiming something isn't possible just because they don't understand.

10 years ago? I think you mean the time you've been working on ToR XD
Seriously though, where are the screenshots from the real hardware?

...

(Also, congratulations on poluting a perfectly civilized conversation. I don't need a reason to feel entitled to answer, as this is a forum board and as such, it's everyone's right.)

Once again, they do not owe anything to you, they said they'll give more informations in the future so maybe they'll add hardware screenshots just for you, But in the meantime, stop argumenting about your false claims, you're still doing it, and that's clearly not civilized to post everywhere that their video is edited and that it's not "fair" just because you do not understand what is possible and what isn't.

I'm really sorry to have to tell you this, but you're in no position to tell me whether I do or don't understand what's possible and what's not, as both my successes and failures put me in a better possition than yours, in terms of technical background. You know this, so please cut the dumbness and take your personal vendetta to someone who cares.

If the people who actually did anything technical in the presented project would like to discuss those aspect, they are welcome! If they are going to be groupies in such terms like: "We don't ow nobodu nothing BLAH BLA", or straight out just as uncivilized... By all means, they can save it, not only the discussion, but the entire patch! XD

Really shamefull, that what could have been a respectful achievement is presented in these pitiful ways, wasting respect.

A few points:
  • The serif font you see in the trailer and the screenshots is 100% rendered in-game.
  • Of course, it will only look as good as in the trailer if you play in an environment that allows increasing the rendering resolution, such as an emulator.
  • For other environments, such as on actual PSPs, we provide a switch in the in-game option menu to use pixel fonts instead. These are simply rendered pixel-perfectly. You can see a few screenshots showing this in the blog post accompanying the trailer. We figured this was the best option because the game scales its font basically everywhere, making it very difficult to read on the PSP in many places—even in the Japanese version. Just look at the popup helps in the menu.
  • Note that we will take care that the game plays well and looks good on all reasonable platforms, including the ones you listed. I hope you understand that this requires a huge effort from us, which is why we don't and can't show every platform at once.
  • The "battle font" (the big letters) is indeed an HD texture replaced using PPSSPP. However, not only is the game entirely playable without it, the base platforms (PSP/PS2) are not even influenced by this since the font only includes the digits and capital Latin letters, nothing Japanese. In addition, I assure you that similar results should be feasible by reprogramming the relevant parts of the game.
  • Finally, also note that we will write in more detail about these features in future blog posts. In fact, the next blog post had already been planned to elaborate on the font options and their applicability to different platforms.

Well, at least you're proving what I said.
And I just mentionned that they should not listen to you, because, once again, you're lying "everywhere" about something you do not understand, I'm sorry if that triggered you to the point where you feel the need to insult/diminish me every post you make. That doesn't change the fact that "expressing a doubt" as you call it, in such aggressive form, instead of, you know, ask nicely? Is not the way to go. Feel free to continue with your insults, I don't really care about bullies.

I think you're the only one triggered here, to you, I've only spoke fact, to others, questions.

I'll tell you guys one thing. ToD2 was a game I was interested in translating, and did the initial hacking 7 years ago, as evidenced by these:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/romhacking-in-tales-of-destiny-2.373960/
(EDIT: Actually I'm reading it now and it's super outdated, I hadn't even edited the font when I wrote this, the 11 bits of the index table are the size reminder, etc...)

It's actually not that hard once you understand the SCED code section (to get full freedom on how text is supposed to look and where), and the text decoding routine, which maps text to font character positions (in fact editing these is what allows to cleanly add lowercase letters to the PSP version, which is probably the first wall most people encounter on this game). Heck, the PSP version even included the font map right after it, there, waiting to help a romhacker extract the text.

As I end up writing in that thread, this project got not much interest. So I abandoned it in favour of other projects: not even JAP -> ENG translations, but with more traction back then. This hasn't changed, here we are: a ToD2 project revealed 2 days ago and half a page of comments, more than half idiotic flaming.

Now childish groupies will have the usual argument: "I don't care about people, I don't owe them anything, I do it for myself, blah blah". really mature, thank you, please do go on...

From my side I was still interested in the technical aspect, since I'm pretty sure I left a lot out when I moved on, and one is always curious, that quality is what drive us to these projects. I was already looking for my notes...

But thanks for reminding me how utterly toxic the tales of scene is. Really dodged a bullet 7 years ago. If there was low interest overall in the translation, consider one extra out, so don't expect further answers from my side in this polluted thread.

Kind regard and good luck, you're gonna need it (and I'm not talking about romhacking or translations).

tl;dr for anyone who might come after the constant harassement and passive/agressiveness from Sky, the bully left, you can continue as usual now.

Good lord SkyBladeCloud can you get anymore petty?

This is a dedicated team that has worked from the ground up with zero help to make a game that has went untranslated for over 20 years to finally have an english translation. Their work speaks for themselves. Not sure why you feel the need to go in and assess a video frame by frame because it's a project that you couldn't do yourself. But get over yourself. You're not relevant anymore. You will never be relevant again. I've even heard rumors about you charging people for help in hacking projects. How low can you get? You're toxic to the scene and this thread and this project. Go bitch about it on your blog or in discord or something but don't attack them. Or hell, go your own translation of the game and see whose hacking skills are superior.

Amazing work Lumina Team, impressive hacking on the project. And I think it's a title many have waited to play for a long time. Personally I think it has one of the best battle systems in the Tales series. Fond memories of this one, and will be nice to play it in English instead of Japanese like I played it 20 years ago when I imported a NTSC-J PS2 just to play this. Very excited! Thank you for this!
