Hacking Would it make sense upgrading from a hacked Wii to a hacked Wii-U (in 2021)?

I have a Wii with Nintendont (using a wired gamecube controller, gamecube memory card a FAT32 hard drive), a WBFS drive for Wii games, and quite a few emulators so I can play old games. There are a few Wii-U games I want to play, and running emulators with the increased CPU speed might be nice (though they're pretty solid on the Wii).

I'm not too ♥♥♥ on the TV screen-shaped controller for the Wii-U. I can buy a Wii-U and the Wii-U games I've wanted to play for a decent price, at a local used game store. Would it make much sense upgrading to a Wii U and hacking it, or I should just stick with my hacked Wii (and not bother playing Zelda Breath of the Wild and Mario Maker)?

To me besides the obvious benefit of playing Wii U games is injections where you can have Wii U, Wii, Gamecube and some N64/DS roms as games all on your Wii U menu with a nice icon that makes them all look like Wii U games. You can also play some Wii games with gamepad and all Gamecube games.

If you don't care about these benefits stay with Wii if you do buy a Wii U.

No. I suggest you invest in a graphics card and then you can play you can play your Wii U games on your computer using CEMU. Or skip for the switch it<s a way better console.

Wii U is really a pain if you want to play wii games. You won`t like it if you have a hacked wii it is NOT an upgrade in any way.

I don't get why it's a pain to play Wii games you can go in vWii which is pretty much identical to Wii menu and you use a Wiimote just like you do on Wii. It's the same thing unless you're using injects which I think makes it better not worse because you can use Wii U gamepad on some games and have them in the same menu as Wii U games.

Is modding and getting the emulators and running Wii games from hard drives as straightforward as it is with the Wii?

Its an extra menu, more buggy I am just speaking from experience; I played Wii a lot I still prefer to use it over Wii U any day. My opinion I am sure other ppl think the same way you don<t have to.

I cant say I've experienced any bugs but if you say you have I won't argue. The main benefit to me having a Wii over vWii would be the original model Wii that has the Gamecube ports so you could use a Gamecube controller. But I am using my Wavebird on Wii U with a Mayflash adapter that hooks up to the Wiimote.

Because of injects I haven't gone in vWii in years, I just play Wii games off the main Wii U menu like all my other games.

Even though I love the Wii u, I just agree with magsor because using a external hard drive on the wii u is very annoying, unlike on Wii which, if you done everything right (formatted and installed cios), is quite effortless. Having to hunt Y usb cables or hard drives with power supplies is very, very hard and annoying today. Most external hard drives you will purchase anywhere dont come with Y usb cables. My recent USB3.0 drive works with the Wii but not with the Wii U just because of Nintendo stupidity of restricting the power of the USB ports and I cant find a Y cable for it.

If you want to play Zelda botw or Mario Maker you are better of choosing a Nintendo Switch. The Wii U is a solid console (softmodded) too, but prepare for the slow process of setting up homebrew, installing games and what not.

Setting up homebrew on the Wii U was pretty quick in my experience, then again, I haven't used a Wii U in a long while.

Only need 1 HDD + y cable + injects, then you have everything on the same menu don't even have to go in vWii with your Wiimote.

As far as Wii software is concerned, it's more a sidegrade than an upgrade. The main reason for getting a Wii U should be Wii U games - the backwards compatibility is just a neat little bonus.

Keep your Wii around, though. Nintendont supports LAN play for all three games that use it. (One of them is Double Dash, though, and it supports 8 players with only two consoles.)

There are some downsides of using vWii compared to a real Wii.

Although most homebrews are compatible, there are some that won't work, like RiiConnect24 for example (although I saw contradicting information in this regard).
GameCube adapter won't work with Wii titles.
Video output can be a little disappointing.
If you are using a fat32 HDD and want to switch between Wii menu and Wii U menu, you need to use Ustealth, otherwise the console will always prompt you to format the hard drive.

The ideal scenario would be to have both, but in a situation where you can only have one I would definitely choose Wii U, having it has its upsides: off-tv play with gamepad compatibility for Wii and GCN games, overclocking and more games to play in HD.

Are there any major disadvantages to playing Wii game ISOs, & Nintendont games on a Wii-U, compared to the Wii? The Gamecube controllers are cool on the actual Wii, but Nintendont bluetooth support makes up for it, so that's not a deal-breaker for me.

What about running emulators? Will there be any improvement with emulators, between the Wii & Wii-U? Is there a Wii-U specific version of the Homebrew Channel, or it uses vWii? Does vWii mode underclock the CPU?

Wii homebrew is ran through HBC on vWii, just like on the regular Wii.
I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be any disadvantages with running USB loaders or Nintendont on a Wii U.
Also I don't know if there are any performance improvements with running emulators on vWii compared to a regular Wii, however I guess not.

It's not impossible for games to be patched to support it, but it can't happen on-the-fly.

vWii doesn't have any performance boosts, but the Wii Virtual Console (these are actually different!) can be configured to support the GamePad and run the single CPU core that Wii mode actually runs at full speed.

There are advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is having all your Wii, Wii U and Gamecube games on a single console. You can put them all in a single HDD via injects, or have one HDD for Wii U and anorher one for everything else which I prefer. You also get HDMI output for Wii games, which looks much better than av cables on modern TVs. The Wii U is also a great way to play DS games.

The main disadvantage is the lack of Gamecube controller ports, this can be circumvented using third party adapters like Mayflash magic NS or Gamecube to wiimote adapter, but if you wanna play local multiplayer it might get expensive. You will also need a Y cable for your HDD to get enough power, and this will reduce the number of available usb ports.
