Modder Plutoo releases nx-btred, a homebrew Bluetooth audio driver for the Nintendo Switch

switch bluetooth.PNG

Despite the Nintendo Switch's appeal as a modern handheld-home console hybrid to seamlessly game on-the-go and on a big screen, it lacks a crucial element of most modern devices: Blutooth audio support. Thankfully, third-party accessories like the GuliKit Route+ Pro and the EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid exist as workarounds to do what Nintendon't. But these require additional purchases and adds a dongle to the console which isn't ideal for storage.

Another workaround was just released which could prove more enticing as it comes at no cost and is fully software-based: nx-btred. Released a couple of hours ago by Switch modding scene member Plutoo, nx-btred is a Bluetooth audio driver/redirector for the Nintendo Switch. Plutoo explains that their solution works through the audrec:u service so as to record the game audio and subsequently outputs it on the new audio Bluetooth driver introduced in firmware version 12.0.0.

As such, this mod requires a Nintendo Switch on firmware 12.0.0+, as well as the latest Atmosphere and MissionControl to be installed, in order to function. Of note, only games audio can be recorded and not the system applets due to a limitation of the audrec:u service.

Of course, you should proceed with this mod at your own risk and not every headphone brands have been tested, so you might encounter some issues. But nx-btred does show promise as a recent release that brings a much-needed feature to the Switch. It's safe to say that it's worth keeping an eye on any issues users come across will be addresses in future releases (Plutoo fixed one a couple of hours after an issue with headphones outputting noise was reported).

Head to the Github repository below to find a link to the files required to download nx-btred and a set up guide.

In theory, should this work with something like an Anker BlueTooth speaker ?

I have 1 cheapo Chinese monitor I use which has no speakers and it would be a cool way to listen

"modern" lmfao what is modern about it, its a fucking nvidia gaming tablet clone with nothing modern, shit wifi card/speed, shit internal storage, shit hardware, shit joycons, no widi, shit box to play on tv, and overall same ole recycled shit games ported.

nintendo should just stop trying to make cheap/shit consoles, we do not need to buy another £300+ inferior old tech crap console to play the same ole shit games we already own or could buy on your last console, or could buy that console for even less.

here is a simple feature brought to you no thanks to exploits/cfw which nintendo focus more on shutting down than they do giving us fucking gamers something new and worthy of buying/playing.

Perfect, you alway can choose to not buying it.

Can you people stop bickering and stay on topic here please. @OP, great job on getting this to work! I'm not on 12.0.0 yet so I can't try it out, but I'm looking forward to downloading this in the future.

I don't think they'd try that with this. Too niche. Then again I expect this to get a lot attention when bigger gaming sites get wind of it.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I think because of the version of Bluetooth that they used, they had to make a choice between consistent joycon connectivity (up to, what, 8 controllers or something) or headphones.

Obviously they chose the joycons.
I am pretty sure that they could've come up with something in between. 1 pair of joy-cons (or just a single full controller) and Bluetooth audio or more joy-cons and no Bluetooth audio. Definitely better than nothing.

As much as I love the switch I just never understood Nintendo's reasoning on NOT including Bluetooth on a handheld.

Why because you cant handle an opinion that puts some truths out there.

You dont like it, that a hacker finaly brings something good that nintendo didnt want to pay to provide.

Maybe you need to leave if you cant accept criticism over your fanboy clone tablet.

Nintendo working very hard to put stop to hackers and cfw rather than look at what these guys are doing and actually offer it.

But no, theyll probably see this and make a whole new system to include it.

Shit internal storage? my 2 Switch v1 has the max 256 gb internal storage
No it doesn't, your sd card is not internal storage.

Stock units all come with a shitty 32gb internal storage.

Which is pathetic considering game carts are also limited or expensive to hold the entire game, this storage cost passed onto the dev to pay for larger game cart, yet again making same mistake back on the n64, but nintendo dont care, as long as theyre making the money.

And they pass the cost to the consumer having to buy an sd card in order to download the game data as it cant fit on the expensive game carts.

Jeez man this thread is so weird... Weirder than the SX*S battle threads, but regardless;

This app is really cool, the volume processing isn't that great, it doesn't properly scale up audio, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work in games that you can't do recording in (Smash, Fortnite etc.) buttttt, what we have here is more than a working prototype. Headset and audio bugs can be worked out, so I think thats cool.

Disconnect and reconnect when coming out of sleep is very fast, pairing is simple and effortless and it feels good.

I also noticed that keeping the switch volume to +1 or +2 is great, and just scaling up the audio in the bluetooth device is better for clarity. The problem is, some headphones don't have volume control (AirPods) and makes this hard to use. Lastly, the best app to use this on is YouTube, no delay or lag, audio was somewhat clear at low volumes and it was... passable.

So, there are ways to go but this sys module is AWESOME.

a tablet clone thats inferior,
To what, exactly? The overly glorified PCs shoved into custom form factors that are the current gen? At least Switch games are fun, which I think is the point of video games.
No it doesn't, your sd card is not internal storage.
It can be upgraded.

It's almost like someone already tried an optical drive and disc media for a portable system which ended up being one of the worst mediums ever. Now I wonder who that was...Oh, and cartridges have considerably faster load times, so there's that, too. But who really cares? Physical media is dead. Get over it.
And they pass the cost to the consumer having to buy an sd card
I'm guessing you're not old enough to have ever purchased a Playstation memory card. 8 mb of storage used to cost more than most games. Now a 256 GB mSD is, what? $20? Boy howdy, that sure is breaking the bank. This is such a stupid argument to try to make considering expandable storage (which has been, in the past, pertinent to the function of the console) has been an existing peripheral for decades. External hard drives are still marketed for the other consoles, so your argument is entirely moot. I mean Christ, if you're gonna be pessimistic just for the sake of it, at least make sure your points are actually cogent.

Fairly impressive, though it makes you wonder if Nintendo is going to implement it themselves, after all, this module became possible with the additional services added on Firmware 12. Nevertheless, it is a great addition to the scene, and hopefully it will be improved upon. Just a word of caution, a friend of mine tried it earlier and he got his eardrums blasted by a high pitched noise, heed the warning on the git page if you want to try it.

You're asking too much..

Dumbasses fight over a piece of plastic

Been going on since the 80s.. Hell, historically speaking, we as a race have killed over some pretty stupid shit.

"Opinion" is purely subjective and can be argued til the cows come home.. "Facts" are objective and usually can't be refuted.

You have yet to offer much objective insight and instead throw shade at anyone who calls you out on your incoherent babbling.

As far as the main point of the thread goes? I think the reason that Nintendo didn't opt for Bluetooth audio from the get go, is because they'd rather have consistent and reliable connections to the controllers. Especially in local multiplayer.. Aren't they using a low powered chip too?

If I connect my headphones and the sound still comes out of my speakers in game, that means my headphones don't work right?
