Super Mario 64 Plus "romhack" adds new moves, gameplay enhancements, and permadeath

If you haven't gotten your fill from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, or you needed yet another reason to return to the beloved classic, then Super Mario 64 Plus might be what you're looking for. Acting effectively as a major romhack, but in the form of a fork of the Super Mario 64 decompilation PC port, Super Mario 64 Plus adds all sorts of fun features, like being able to collect multiple Stars in a level, giving Mario new mobility moves from Sunshine and Odyseey, more camera and draw distance options, tons of small tweaks, and modes like daredevil or permadeath, with the latter option erasing all your progress and save file if you ever die. All of the additions have toggles, meaning you can mix and match the options, for a customized experience to your liking.

These features include (but not limited to):
- More responsive controls
- Improved camera
- Extended moveset
- The ability to continue the level after getting a star
- Optional extra modes
- 60FPS support via interpolation
- Various bug fixes

3D All-Stars has 64 Shindou. Nintendo disagrees with you.
Okay but BLJs are epic and cool and Mario goes WAHOO a bunch of times which is awesome so I think you're really lowballing this monumental fact pal

Also Nintendo can eat my shorts

Edit: also I just noticed that the tail of the J in this font goes underneath the L when you write BLJ and I can't unsee it

Wonder how they handle levels that retool themselves somewhat between stars.
You pretty much have to exit and reenter the level for those.
For example, in Bob Omb Battlefield, you can get almost all but one star, that being the 2nd star for the Koopa race.
You can get all the other 5 stars (and even the 100 coins one if you're good enough), then exit the level and reenter for the Koopa one.

Have to tell you, the game is WAY more enjoyable that way.
You notice just how much the game drags in playtime by entering and reentering stages over and over again.
You can swiftly go through all the stages and grab almost all the stars in a good sweep, only a few require you to reenter them.

Outside of that, I wish SM64 Plus had a way to compile a custom N64 ROM with the changes we selected.
That would make for the ultimate SM64 romhack, surely a SM64 Redux-like experience!

Lmao you just walk into a room and they force you to play Mario 64 until you die. Sounds awesome. I would endorse the death penalty if it meant I could play Mario 64 one last time.

Just tried it out--this was legit the SM64 for Switch that Nintendo should have made--it's amazing. Love it!

I actually found this a few weeks ago. It turns out there are forks on forks of that original github source and this is just one of them. The thing that really bugged me about this version was the lack of visual enhancements standard to PC ports. I do like that they make this easy enough that you can have no technical prowess whatsoever to experience this, but sm64builder2 is nearly as user-friendly and has way more options (including the render96 models and machine up-rezzed textures that look great without betraying nostalgia.) Or not, because options. (They even added this version to that launcher about a week ago.) The Odyssey Moveset mod is something I can no longer live without, and while this has a somewhat serviceable approximation, a well-implemented Cappy in SM64 is not a bell I can un-ring.

If anyone wants to use that one though, make sure to choose DirectX as the renderer, because OpenGL can lag terribly for some reason.

Also, apparently building for Switch, which has worked in the past, doesn't work right now; when I tried to look into that on the Render96 Discord server they seemed to cite audio issues.

Also, please stop tweaking the antiquated 64 version, when the superior DS remake exists - all it needs to become perfection is dual-analog controls, really.
Does the DS version have a decompilation? I don't think so.

I've played another modded version some time ago allowing coop play online, this was a great time too, I really love how far these Mario 64 mods have gone to!
They add even more replayability on a already very replayable game, what to not enjoy?! :D

... It's the same fifteen courses people have already been playing for the last twenty years?
Doesn't make them bad courses. I, for one, still prefer 64 DS over newer games like Odyssey and 3D World and Galaxy, simply because 64 DS's courses are damn-near perfection. There's almost no truly-frustrating Stars; none that have time limits or require tracing a path or insane movement tech. None that are cryptic.
