Sony decides to keep PS3 and Vita PlayStation Store access alive instead of shutting it down

Urrrrntitled.png

Sony will no longer be killing off support for the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Last month saw the official announcement that both systems would no longer be able to purchase new digital games or access the PlayStation Store, but that decision has been walked back. This is because Sony saw the passionate outcry of fans upset about the closure, and so the PS3 and Vita will be able to work as they have been. However, the PSP's access will still be going offline as previously planned, on July 2nd.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

If Sony isn't going to do full backwards compatability beyond PS4 on the PS5, then honestly I think they should consider re-releasing the PS3, but give it a different name, something like Playstation Legacy or something like that, reincorporate the PS1 and PS2 backwards compatability, and along with keeping the PS3 store open, set it up where you can digitally download games from the PS1,2,3, and PSP onto the device (I imagine PSP games wouldn't be an issue on the devices, though I know Vita games would probably be out of the question) and have the store organized in such a way that easily separates the legacy systems.

Now I know such a device wouldn't exactly sell like hotcakes, so they couldn't be super mass produced and as such prices wouldn't be as low as would be desired, but just keep the option available and I'm sure a fair amount of people would be interested.

This, or make SoCs inside an enclosure that connects via USB 3.0, and emulate the PS1/PS2 and PS3 via those. The SoCs could interact with the PS5's OS and allow the disc drive to read PS3 Blu-Rays as well as CDs and DVDs, if the PS5's disc drive can even read those in the first place.

After all, Sony did make the Memory Card adapter that works with both PS1 and PS2 Memory Cards, so why not SoCs for the entire systems that they can't be bothered writing code to emulate?

I love how people have just been shown that their Discs don't mean jack fucking shit.... still somehow think buying games physically makes any difference.
It actually does welll before Sony changed their minds... If your HDD or data ended up being lost then RIP. No store to access to re download the said games. Some ppl delete games just to free up space I'm sure Sony had to take that into account changing their minds.

These thoughts have got me wandering over to Nintendo, and it occurs to me that if they rebranded the Wii U and marketed it correctly, it could probably sell so much better today than when it was actually new. Call it Nintendo Legacy, and set up its digital store to have as many past Nintendo games as the Wii U can handle (which thanks to our homebrew scene, we know is just about every Nintendo device, except for the 3DS and Switch, granted we can stream our 3DS on the Wii U, but I think we can omit that one system), to just make it the all-in-one Nintendo device for people in this modern era looking to explore Nintendo's backlog.

If they actually marketed it as a Nintendo device that plays the vast majority of games from the: NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, GB, GBC, GBA, and DS games (hell you could throw Virtual Boy and Game & Watch games on there too if ya really wanted), that would be a super appealing system to a lot of people today. Granted, I'm sure getting all the best 3rd party titles of the past on such a digital service wouldn't be possible, but they've been able to get many of them in the past for the virtual consoles as well as the Switch Online services. Such an idea should totally be possible, though I know it would never happen. Ah well, you can unofficially get it done though which is great, just would be amazing if the masses could appreciate the device like those of us who have hacked it.

Well that's nice I guess. I still don't care either way, I played whatever Vita/PS3 games I wanted so going down or staying up doesn't matter to me.

But I would love to see sales data in a year or so from now on PS3/Vita purchases, just to see if all the outcry was actually legitimate and people still did plan on buying games on those consoles or if turns out all the people complaining...weren't actually going to buy PS3/Vita stuff anyways and just wanted to complain about something (not that it's not a valid complaint, of course, taking the stores down at all is definitely stupid decision on Sony's part).

now, if sony could get their shit together with the "an error has occurred" instead of blaming the customer or the payment method/card. that's what happened to me, and I ended up returning all ps3 equipment. it was happening to someone else on psx place, and the only way he found to fix it was to make a new account. I have no issues on Nintendo's eshop, so sony must be incompetent.

I think people are starting to realize they are eventually getting screwed with digital purchases, it makes the whole industry look bad

From my understanding they were never going to not allow you to access your already purchased games, you just couldn't buy new ones.

Pissing off all of your past customers before they've had a chance to buy your new console is not a very smart move.

Plus with TSMC's chip shortage supposed to last through 2022, the future does not bode well for the supply of PS5s.

I wonder if this could lead developers to release more games for the PS4 and possibly even the Vita (one can dream right?)

I thought the problem is also not allowing patches to download too
That was a completely separate issue, and not one that was intended. Only completely random games in completely random regions (ie some updates would download in one region but not another) were having issues downloading updates which is definitely a bug and not them intentionally removing updates. If it were intentional, they wouldn't go removing updates for random ass games at random ass times, they'd just remove them all at once.

I originally assumed the issue they were having with that was related to Sony working on shutting down purchases, but now I suspect they were probably migrating servers for this new "solution" and something borked along the way. I expect the bug will be fixed eventually (if it's not already, haven't really looked much more into it).

Yea you right, I thought about updating my PS3 CFW to 4.91, but why really, everything plays fine now. I guess for people that have already updated past 4.9 it would be helpful.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Idk if online servers are still active that would be my only thought
    +1
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Thats true, personally I don't play it online at all, in fact, I deleted all wifi details on it once I installed CFW, so it won't connect and auto-update itself
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I play most games that are on both PS3/360 strickly on the 360, but PS3 exclusives are really only games I play on the PS3 (You know me, I'm more of a Xbox junkie)

Ps3 really has no titles worth going online

@BigOnYa I had 4.89 hfw on super slim that was great, but when I got a new hard disk I forgot where the guide was and could only find a guide for 4.90 and its resources
  • S @ salazarcosplay:
@BigOnYa I think another reason to want to update is if the hfw is at the level of the fw

    you can sync trophies
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea that's what I'm sitting on now- 4.9, and it seems fine, have had no issues at all
