'Days Gone' gets PC gameplay reveal trailer and launch date

Yet another PlayStation-exclusive is coming to PCs. After Horizon Zero Dawn, it was announced that the next game from one of Sony's first-party developers coming to PCs would be the post-apocalyptic title from Bend Studio Days Gone. The studio has shared the first gameplay footage of the upcoming version today along with some details:

Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game set two years after a devastating global pandemic. Play as Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival while searching for a reason to live.

Days Gone's PC version will come with 21:9 ultra-wide monitor support, a "super resolution photo mode" and the ability to use 1st and 3rd party controllers, as well as the classic PC mouse and keyboard combo.

Today's announcement also revealed the launch date of the PC version: May 18. Days Gone is already available for pre-purchase from Steam and Epic Games Store.

Its not the multiple configurations that cause issues with the pc version, thats just pr talk mostly. Multiple configurations are annoying for testing, and you might get weird specific bugs, but its no excuse when games all use APIs to detach from specific configurations. Its really just AMD driver and Nvidia driver, you dont code to a specific video card model...

Yeah, no. The driver's API isn't a magic wand and you do not even technically worry with that. Direct X, Vulcan and OpenGL typically take care of that for you. You still have to do resource management, including video memory management and CPU, Ram etc and have to account for not only size but processing power to manage you game specs to a playable level on a target range of PCs.

Now, your development effort can be cut shorter if you use a game engine like Unreal that is developed and tested over a long time for PC and used in multiple cases. But a port such as HZD uses it's own engine, developed for PS4, that has to be ported too.

Now the amount that you can test and correct before can be bigger or smaller depending on how big of a pool your testers are, that's why some companies opt for beta testing with the consumer directly, but that's a pre-release cost that not all companies are able to afford, or in case of HZD, even if they could with the might of Sony, could they really attract people to beta test an already released game? And even if the answer is yes to all of this, they'd still have to balance if that cost would justify not just releasing the game and patch it in the following days. Given it is an established game, and whatever bugs and problems weren't big and therefore big problems weren't predicted, I believe no.

But yeah, without an attractive open beta when your name reaches the market it will be exposed to a universe of settings that will eventually reveal stuff you could not detect on a lab environment.

So it means you spent at least 2400 dollars in 6 years only for gpu since 2015 (970 was released at the end of 2014), so sad to read that : dev don’t need to optimize their code, thanks to you

On my side I remembered micro-shuttering on gta V at launch on my last high setup : I7 4790k, 16 Go ram, 980ti, SSD Samsung, screen 1440p g-sync,...i was a big fan of pc games but I changed my mind, I prefer now a console to play games (95% of games are on console), i sell recently my ps4 pro 200 € (buy 300€ 2019) to buy ps5 for 499€: money saved, easy to play or stream on my Switch...my last game on pc is wow but I’m a fan of the lore

How good is this game?

(I am asking for real, as I don't know nothing about it)
I'm a big fan. Stop me if you've heard this one before... it's an open-world post-apocalyptic. It's not ridiculously open, though. It's well crafted and slow expanding. The story is decent. You ride a motorcycle and kill zombies; what more do you need to know? Imagine The Last of Us, but it's open-world and there's motorcycles instead of social justice.

Nah the initial PC release for HZD was universally panned for being a shit port, doesn't matter what build you had. I think at this point they've fixed it though.

I'm just waiting eagerly for the Bloodborne port that'll come out in the next decade or so

HZD ran fine on my machine for months and still does, so...FFXV on the other hand....

Shame Days Gone is meh as fuck though

The majority of players would disagree with you.

I though that their zombie franchise was Last of Us, so they have two, interesting...

TLoU isn't a zombie franchise. Have you even played it?

This looks like the most generic Zombie game ever made, no wonder Sony axed a sequel. Almost mistake it for one of those shitty Walking Dead games.

i gave it a shot on PsNow... It feels like an Xbox game... And not in a good way.

I'm pretty certain they only turned down the sequel pre-patch when everyone was still complaining about it's bugs and performance. The game has been a pretty good success since being patched. In fact, guess what? It's done well enough that a PC port is on the way, and they even took the time for several very good enhancements rather than just a pure lazy console port. There WILL be a sequel. I will bet money on it. There are even new rumors that it is already in development. Your second comment would be in the minority for both games. Most who have played them think they are fantastic. What are your top 5 AAA games of the last, say 10 years?

They're not zombies, my bad. They're only humans who got infected, and gained horrifying appearance and now attack everything and infect everything. Totally not zombies sorry.

They are not undead. They are not zombies. The majority of enemies in the game don't even act anything like typical zombies. Not a zombie story line. Etc, etc. Sorry, but facts. For the record, Days Gone isn't a zombie game either.

They look and act like zombies, so that makes them zombies. Devs can argue they are not, but give us a break. They did the same thing with last of us zombies for some reason.

So much of this is just foolish, the guys at digital foundry can test performance for all kinds of platforms and pc configs in a week. Its not as if they are some huge team either. Its amazing how many times digital foundry is the one to reach out and tell publishers what it is wrong, why cant publishers do this on their own? It seems only certain devs do any kind of proper testing. Even on the cpu side for pc, most gamers are using the same few specs and/or slight variants of them.

I actually saw a pr guy from control try using the same sort of bs excuse after they obviously didnt test the series s upgrade for control. Im a developer, and Ive done a bit of game development.. the pr excuses they use dont really make a ton of sense... they just need to make their games scalable.. which any game engine worth its salt would aim for anyway so that performance can be tweaked. Its almost as silly as the covid-19 excuse for delaying games, it doesnt take an extra year just because people are working remotely...

Except you're wrong. They are factually NOT zombies. I don't care about an opinion of how any given enemy may or may not look or act like a zombie. Facts are still facts. Opinions are opinions. "Look and act like zombies" is an opinion (and not even an accurate one at that except in the case of looks in Days Gone, but that in itself is merely my opinion). "They are not zombies" is a factual statement. So whatever floats your boat. No point in continuing.
