There is no single perfect all encompassing Game Boy flashcard that both gives access to the entire library of the Game Boy systems while also including all the built in extra features to make every game the complete experience they were made to be. So what would it take to have such a device? Well I'm here to imagine it and if I have some free time, to make a photoshop mockup of what it might look like.

First things first, the flash card needs to be able to handle GB/C and GBA roms natively, not just native GBA reading while running GB and GBC roms via an emulator like Goomba Color. So give the cart a physical switch that you hit before putting it in your Game Boy that puts it in either GBA or GBC mode to handle all roms natively.

Next we need to look at all the known features built directly into Game Boy games, obviously a real time clock needs to be supported which most modern flashcards do already. But the cart would also want built in gyro for games like Wario Ware Twisted or Kirby Tilt N Tumble. Furthermore, rumble would be desired for the many GBC games that had it as well as the one GBA game that had it (Drill Dozer), ideally if this cart were in GBA mode in a DS (Lite), it would also be recognized as a GBA rumble cart for the DS games that utilized it.

Now we get to the real specific features: a camera head like the Game Boy Camera's would need to be included to properly play Game Boy Camera on the device. And Robopon utilized a built in IR sensor for use in game. It seems dumb to include when the GBC has a built in one of these, but this game only uses the built in cart sensor, and maybe it could somehow be programed to replace the GBC's sensor for games like Pokemon GSC, that used it, when played on a GBA which did not have that sensor.

I'm picturing a bit of a monstrocity at this point lol and I can still take it a step further. You could work the E Reader into the device, but, you'd have to design the device in such a way where it doesn't jut over the front of the Gameboy and have an additional port on the side with a small disconnectable cord that could connect the device to with a GBA or GBA SP multi-player link port. This would also ensure the device could still be put in a DS or DS Lite thanks to not being designed like the actual E-Reader.

Even if such a device could ever exist, it would be ugly lol. So remove the camera and E-Reader functions, but keep everything else and you could probably have a nearly feature complete Game Boy cartridge in a reasonably sized shell. So who wants to go make it lol. I can dream, right?

DMG also lacks the IR blaster and some games only work with the IR blaster and not with link cables, like Card Pop in Pokemon TCG. So a built in IR sensor that could act as a stand-in would be useful to have for a few games, but you aren't missing out on a whole lot without IR.
don't care much about all the other stuff, the amount of games that actually require extra hardware to be playable must be less than a dozen, it's not too hard (or expensive) to buy those games and use a flashcart for all the rest. I played around with my Game Boy Camera a bit recently and while it was fun as a kid it's nothing more than a dumb gimmick with very basic functionality and like 2 minigames you can play, it gets old quick. It's not worth increasing the cost of a flashcart just for that. Rumble is not important. Robopon could be patched to use the GBC's IR sensor. Gyro is the only thing I consider important, as from what I've heard those games are actually quite good and they're unplayable without it (unless there's some patch to use the D-pad but it won't be the same) and also can't really be played on an emulator either, you have to play them on real hardware.

I can't remember the details, but doesn't the GBA recognize GB carts because of some physical difference in the cart's configuration? I don't think it's something you could configure with just a switch – or at least, not in any way cheaply.

EDIT: This is what I'm thinking of.

Why not throw in the widgets for DS Facetraining and Slide Adventure MAGKID too? And all the other Slot-2 accessories?

If the switch is slid down by some little tab you could have either something that clips onto the case or slides out. Tedious to make vs a more simple injection mould but nothing too drastic -- they put it on cheap toys after all.

Also if we are doing weird and wonderful for the GBA
Where are my Plaston Gate and Legendz readers?

All that said I generally struggle to be convinced of the merits of a real time clock, and emulation does fine for me.

Give me a cart that plays the games as well as they can with software fixes, cheats, maybe savestates and I will be happy.

You also forget BOKTAI solar boy Django games use solar sensor which is expensive... unless you use a patch for it. (Also need real time clock) That ain't cheap to do by the way. :ninja:

Inside Gadgets has flash cards with RTC/rumble/solar (I think they're the only ones who have a rumble cart for GB/C?) the most all-in-one for non-essential features might be this solar+rumble GBA cart
https://shop.insidegadgets.com/product/gba-2mb-512kbit-flash-save-optional-solarrumble-flash-cart/

Yeah, it's for people who want to play around with different hardware features for their homebrew, I guess. They do have a larger storage solar+RTC cart that runs the Boktai games though:

wow, flash carts with flash or eeprom saves, even that has evolved from sram only.
now just the shaky sensor is missing (like in yoshis gravitation) :)

a lot of GBA reproductions from china also no longer come with SRAM but use EEPROM or Flash. I have batteryless copies of Pokemon Smarags (German Emerald) and Fire Red from Aliexpress.
