First major PS5 update releases tomorrow; allows transferring of PS5 games to USB extended storage

Sony is rolling out the first major PS5 update tomorrow, worldwide. The main new feature that it brings along is to enable players to transfer their PS5 games from the console's internal storage to a USB extended storage. However, this does not allow games to be downloaded directly to or run on the USB extended storage as the Sony mentions that " PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD". The company writes that this feature is meant to "extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console" as it's faster to reinstall games from an external storage rather than downloading again or copying from a disc.

In the announcement blog post, Sony notes that it is still working on support for storage expansion via M.2 drives.

The new update also brings along other features like 'Cross-generation Share Play' which allows PS4 and PS5 players to use Share Play together while chatting in parties.

In addition to updating the PS5, the PlayStation App itself is receiving new features. These include joining a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, managing PS5 storage, comparing trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store.

You can find more details about the new updates in the official PlayStation Blog post linked below.

they could atleast allow some games to be played off the external drive. I'm sure there are plenty or even the majority of games which doesn't use ps5 tech properly. like third party games or even just some indies. I think the most games on ps4 with app2usb still worked great with a usb 2.0 external drive, even if official extended option only allowed usb 3.0.

And still no Dolby Vision support for the 4K Blu-ray player. I guess the PS5 isn't ready for all of the Sony tv's that have Dolby Vision support and also advertised as "READY FOR PS5!!!!". It pisses me off that I spend $500+ on their new console and they expect me to dish out another few hundred on a stand alone 4K player that DOES have Dolby Vision. This is one instance where I'll say "Fuck you, Sony!!!". I couldn't care less about expandable storage as I never have more than a handful of games on my consoles anyway. I finish one and delete it, instead of trying to play 50 games at one time and keep all of their stories and control schemes separated from one another. The only games that ever stay on my consoles are ones heavy on multiplayer like a racing game or something, or casual games that you can pick up and play briefly and put back down within 30 minutes.

The problem with that is the fast storage isn't just being used to benefit only loading screens, the PS5 (and Sexbox, too) can stream texture data directly to the GPU/CPU from their storage devices, as opposed to it going from storage to RAM/VRAM to CPU/GPU. If a slower NVMe was used, you wouldn't just get an extra second of loading time, things like textures or particles or whatever other data is being loaded would have serious pop in issues that might make playing a game impossible, or at least not very fun.

I don't expect all games will actually use that feature, but I suspect many will so it's not exactly a good solution to just use whatever and hope for the best TBH

The fact that there are also m.2 NVMe drives without DRAM cache which would exacerbate that problem as well. On top of that, whether the drive has a DRAM cache or not is not advertised. Of course, even if it was it's not like everyone would understand what that even means. I'm not really surprised Sony hasn't done anything yet with the m.2 expansion. I wouldn't even be surprised if they only allowed proprietary ones to resolve all the issues you've pointed out. Time will tell, I suppose.
