Full 4k port of Timesplitters 2 found inside Homefront: The Revolution

After five years, the mystery behind an arcade machine in Homefront: The Revolution has been solved. The arcade machine featured a demo of TimeSplitters 2, letting players access the first two levels--notably, this is the closest to a PC port of TimeSplitters 2 that's been officially released. Dataminers, however, were able to find files relating to the entire game in the code, but with no way to access them they were unsure if the entire game had been ported or not. Efforts continued over the years, but no major discoveries were made.

Then, last week, former Crytek developer Matt Phillips Tweeted the following in response to a thread asking game developers to post their favourite Easter eggs they've snuck into their games: "My proudest moment. Fully playable, native 4K port of TimeSplitters 2 hidden in this arcade machine in Homefront: The Revolution." He went on to explain that the unlock code has been lost, leaving even him with no way to access the game. He had given a friend of his a notebook with the code, who once tried to post it in a Discord server to let people know about this hidden port, but he was called a liar and promptly banned. He also let people know that there were no hints to the unlock code hidden in the game's code, so people shouldn't waste their time searching.

It seemed like that was the end of the story. Until, four days after this revelation, Spencer Perrault, a software engineer at Microsoft and presumably Philips' friend with the notebook, Tweeted out the code. It still took some time for the code to be found due to Twitter's algorithm burying the Tweet, but eventually it was discovered by a Discord community member named Sandwave. Meanwhile, another member named Fanoto was reverse engineering input checks on the PC version, and discovered codes for the arcade and challenge modes, as well as several that serve an unknown purpose. Spencer Perrault has also since Tweeted another code that apparently provides invincibility.



For those unaware of the connection between TimeSplitters 2 and Homefront: The Revolution, Dambuster Studios--the team behind Homefront--were formerly Crytek UK but were renamed after Crytek faced financial difficulties and sold the Homefront franchise to Deep Silver, who retained most of the original staff to continue work on the game. Before they were Crytek UK, however, the team was Free Radical Design, developers of the TimeSplitters franchise, meaning that they still held the rights after two name and publisher changes (and, for the record, Matt Philips notes that all the necessary paperwork was done to ensure everything was done above board).

Is this the game where you could use a rocket launcher or something to mine through rock and build tunnels? If not, does anyone remember that? It may have been on PSX not PS2. Maybe it was Timesplitters 1.

No, that's what you want to read.

I'm saying that I don't play games just for the graphics or because they're "popular" on the day. I still enjoy playing classics and many of them are way better than most remakes which only change the graphics, the levels and become a "new game" while keeping the same gaming experience.

There are a very few "exclusives" really worth to be played, most of them are remakes of another "game formula" from another console or another franchise. Copycats are everywhere!

I will respectfully disagree on that as well. I've really loved many, many, many PlayStation exclusives ever since PS1. To each their own.

Edit: For the record I do own several consoles and also have a gaming pc. Although I really need to update the 1060 but that's not happening with the prices of GPUs. I already have a PS5 and I feel buying a Series X would be more cost effective at this point in time than a new GPU.

Ah, Timesplitters 2. So many memories. So many hours spent throwing bricks at my now former best friend. I'm honestly trying to figure out which made him more salty; the number of times I managed to attach a remote mine to his face, or that time he caught me with his sister. It's honestly hard to tell. He REALLY hates remote mines...

I've played a bunch of Homefront The Revolution the past two nights. I'm finding this game to be just miserable to slog through just to goof with TimeSplitters 2. I'll do it all the same but maaaaan I don't know what this game was going for.

This reminds me of when modders found a complete ps2 master disc iso inside the game files of a ps3 dbz game. The master disc iso was of a ps2 dbz game and was thought to be used as a "padding" file to boost disc load speeds. The master iso was what is used at the actual retail game disc factory to be used to make the retail disc. Does anyone remember what ps3 game this was?

YES. WHOLE HEARTEDLY YES. the only thing console exclusives do is prevent people from being able to play the version of the game not gimped for the crap consoles. PC exclusives make sense because the platform has a lot more unique traits and features consoles will never have. Console exclusives dont and are just pure greed

Heh... I've joked a few times that HD remakes were being churned out by summer interns. I thought that was hyperbolic (meaning : that it was just a small team), but apparently it's something that... A single programmer can just hide it in another game for lulz?

No, seriously... This isn't a late April fools joke, right? :unsure:
