This is awesome. Works perfectly on my SCPH-77001!
I switched to Dex 77000 and am running both NTSC-J and NTSC-U DVD-based games with no problems. Thanks :)

Edit: Tried DVD playback (testing because it's meant to be region free anyway) to be greeted with a "DVD Player is not setup" error message, which ultimately boots me back to the OSD if I try to load a disc anyway. Is this expected behavior? Seems like it shouldn't happen on Deckard-based systems, but it does.

Edit 2: Switched to DTL-77001 and DVD playback on same-region DVDs is a go again. Will try out of region in a moment and follow up.

Edit 3: See attached file. Interesting... It may have always done this, but I don't really remember nor entirely care to test further. I've got a drive in my PC for watching out of region discs anyway.

Edit 4 (Final update): The solution linked here was able to unlock DVD playback for out-of-region discs perfectly.

OT:

I got a 750 in my un-MechaPWN'd PAL 77004 + PS1VModeNeg, and I can play Dino Crisis (NTSC-U) quite nicely.
Mine was a SCPH-75000. NTSC games disable their AntiMod on PAL systems so that could be why it works on your PAL system and not my NTSC-J system.

Use the scph-75004.
github.com/MechaResearch/MechaPwn/blob/master/README.md said:
On SCPH-7500X and later models (also known as Deckard consoles)
  • Disable disc region checks (ps1 and ps2 discs from all region as well as masterdiscs mount with data accessible)
  • Change the IOP ROM region (the ROM sets a specific bank according to the mechacon region flags)
  • Change the region the console reports as, as well as change the disc/kelf region that mechacon allows
  • BOOT original PS2 discs all regions directly from the OSD
  • BOOT original PS2 discs all regions as well as PS2 Masterdiscs from all region by skipping the logo check (for example by loading a disc using ulaunchelf)
  • BOOT PS1 disc originals from all regions
It should refer to backups as well, but they removed any references to backups from the README.md early on. Not sure why?? In the first version of the readme backups had been mentioned.

so did pal got fucked or did pal win in this case?
Huh? Can you phrase that differently? I don't understand.

Install to 75004, if you want to play NTSC ps1 disks (just change the region to 75001)

Thank everybody for the answers, i have a nother question.. i've just remembered that my ps1 backup are all pal o ntsc but pal patchetd (i used to have a ps one slim tha for some reason refuse to read ntsc backups even if it's chipped), can i use this method anyway or i will run into some weird issues? Now for ps1 games i use adrenaline on pstv and retroarch, this new mechapwn hack is better or i must continued using my current setup? I'm asking because my 70004 ps2 slim is brand new and my 75004 ps2 slim is now 15 years old and the laser is note in very good condition lol

On later versions, 7500x and higher, it doesn't matter if a console is PAL or another region by default.
On the older versions, 5000x and 7000x, PAL is worse than NTSC-U

I've installaed the exploit on my scph- 75004, but as i expected the games work some times and sometimes not because the laser is old. i've tried to replace it but i bought 2 on ebay ande they never work. So i was wandering, how bad are the limitations on the scph.70004?

Differs depending on what region your console is from. NTSC-U consoles are almost the same, but PAL consoles have additional regional restrictions that can't be circumvented as easily.
I guess it depends on what you intend to mainly use it for, as well.

Congratulations and thank you to all involved. Has anyone tried playback of PS1 game on CD-RW with Mechapwn? I know it's a long shot, but I'm curious as I don't have any CD-R / RW blank media.

Theoretically it is no difference. If a CD-R backup runs (which it does thanks to MechaPwn), a CD-RW should also run... but... the lasers are old and I've no idea how good they are at reading rewritables. Never had any luck to get a PS1 to read a CD-RW with simple audio.

A test with the PS2 also failed with DVD-RW and CD-RW, but this particular laser is on it's last leg. I would not recommend using RW media. Even if it somewhat works, it will put stress on the drive and is prone to read errors.

If you want to burn some backups, just get some good quality CD-R.

I don't have a CD-RW to try, however a CD-R is booting for me without issue. This is on DTL-77001.
