Has to be summat good looking, yet small enough to fit under the TV - but yeah, still enough space for a decent x86 sbc... Dreamcast would indeed be ideal, but kudos to whoever mentioned the Gamecube - either or for me! Or possibly a good condition SFC/PAL SNES. Or maybe even a PSOne (I'd be a bit too worried about airflow on that one though!)

The idea is that you'd have to drill holes and create your own ventilation, which isn't ideal, I know, but all of these are going probably require the usage of some tools to fit everything together.

Yeah, not to mention the ports, but I'd want to be doing as little of that as possible, and the PSOne is probably the one I'd always be wary of... whereas the Dreamcast, well I'd OC that thing without even thinking about it

None of them TBH, I don't think most consoles look particularly appealing enough to want to stuff a PC in one...but if I had to choose I'd probably go for something along the lines of the original XBOX, a Gamecube, a Sega Saturn, or maybe even a Vectrex for fun and try and wire up the display for shits and giggles as like a hardware status monitor or something.

In terms of hardware, I'd probably just go the easy route and opt for something that has TB4, that way I get decent cooling and a smaller, possibly internal PSU and wouldn't have to deal with trying to fit a GPU in there. Then for bonus points I can make an eGPU enclosure out of another console and, thanks to TB4 having extra bandwidth over TB3, shoving something like a 3070 in one would actually be moderately useable (IIRC benchmarks only showed like 15-20% performance loss from TB4 bandwidth vs normal PCIe ).

I thought playstation 3 was a super computer that china was using to do something.... years ago.

Super computers don't age well.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNIVAC_LARC

Are consoles not already basically pc systems by now?

Depends on what you mean by "basically pc systems". A lot of the parts are similar, how they fit together is slightly different and consoles are locked down so you can't do everything you want with them.

You look at eBay for some sale of some old consoles from your youth for parts, and come across a case. You suddenly get an idea to put a full fledged PC inside this case. Not a Raspberry Pi, ODroid XU4/N2, but a regular, desktop class PC. What case do you go for? Plenty of options to choose from! ;)

For me, I want something that is easy to carry around and has a striking visual design for me, personally. With that, I'd have to go with a Dreamcast running a build with the following setup:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
CPU Cooler: Whatever will provide clearance, but a Noctua-NH-L9a-AM4 should be a good starting point.
Motherboard: Gigabyte AORUS X570 Pro Wi-Fi
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB
Storage: 2TB M.2 Samsung SSD
PSU: PicoPSU 160W

What kind of PC would you put together? Would you make compromises, or go all out?
Xbox 360 easily. More than enough room for adequate cooling, parts, and with the added bonus of being able to fit a full size DVD drive easily due to system using one anyway

or if you decide to not use one, the size of the disc slot isn’t that large so it’s pretty trivial to close off and make pretty

I've got a big ass pc (my girlfriend is not a fan): I think my power-supply has the size of a gamecube, my cpu-cooler has the size of a gamecube, my graphics card has the length of 2 gamecubes...
So I'd like a gamecube with some kind of intel nuc in it, I won't be playing games on it but it would look like a gamecube!
Maybe I'd search for a Panasonic Q, it could double as an entertainment system :)

Erm... Whichever 's largest and /or best airflow. I never understood why people cared for the look of their console or pc. If you're looking at it longer than to find the ' on ' button, you're doing it wrong. And if you're watching it long enough to care about the looks... Let's say I disagree with your priorities in life.

But ey... For the polls sake : Assuming all equal :

The KFC console! :creep:

Looks is only one factor. There are some like myself who, before the lockdowns, wanted a PC that was easier to take over to a friend's house with how TV-centric my setup was until two months ago. Hence, why my current case has a handle on top. That being said, it is one chunky boi, and is kind of like lifting a heavy suitcase around.

The whole idea with something like this would be more for the novelty factor, and all things considered, the DC isn't the biggest console in the world, and has enough space inside for a Ryzen APU oriented build that, if one was going to use it for more local multiplayer games which, outside of maybe NRS fighters, usually don't try to push it to the limit and for games that aren't as demanding, I think it'd serve that purpose well!

Sorry, but that's not really convincing. IMHO, the portability of a device is more due to the connecting cables than the size of the device. And a smaller device means lesser performance, higher heating of the parts or both.
And of course the elephant in the room : laptops.

Don't get me wrong : it's your opinion, and I'm not here to convince you otherwise. I'm just not sharing (or seeing) it, that's all. :)

True, but with the case I have, the TU150 from Lian-Li, you can put a Founders Edition GTX 1080 (that I bought from Best Buy during the Bitcoin Miner Madness from 2018), an i7-8700k, and a Noctua DH-15 inside and have near-silent cooling for all parts involved. Yeah, you're still sacrificing features, but all things considered, I was a bit ahead of the curve back then in getting a M.2 SSD in my PC and all before they've become a bit more affordable than they were back then!

I'm not sure why, but something about the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast makes them stand out to me as something that would work really well on a tabletop as a PC. Their bases seem super sturdy, and they're just big enough to have an actual presence with PC parts inside without being obnoxiously large

GameCube, if it were a little larger. It just has that cute look to it, and the front with the controller plugs would work well for USBs. Plus,. handle.

Yeah, that's why I went with the DC. I've done research, and the GC is just too small to fit a Mini ITX motherboard by itself in there unless you're willing to do something like what Linus did in this video:

The dare I like to see someone try is to put a PC inside a PS2 Slim. With an APU, cooler, Pico PSU, the whole nine yards!
