I have a launch PS5 currently running the launch day update so I could initially go online when I got it and get game updates etc. I have held off on updating it but with the new PS+ games, I've been wanting to update it to the current FW to be able to download and install them to have some more games to play. I believe current FW is 2.50. Do you think it's really worth holding off on not updating the system right now in hopes that something comes out down the line and not being able to really use my system at all, or is it still early enough that updating should be okay until rumors of something being found start coming out? IIRC by the time the PS4 started making any real progress it wasn't really until 4.x, I know an early version was jailbreakable but seemed very limited.

We don't really know much about any firmware so update or don't since we don't have proof of an exploit for any firmware besides 1.0

In my opinion, by the time piracy is available on the PS5, there will be a PS5 Pro making the original semi-obselete. Apart from modding and save-editing PS5 exclusive games, a PC will do everything a hacked PS5 can.

Are you gonna buy any games? If so then update. If not then might as well leave it in a drawer and play something else.
That's a good point, I just updated since any time anyone's able to get there hands on a console from here on out, it will prolly be updated anyways right? So why develop a jailbreak for the only few 10s of thousands of ppl who got one that low?
What are your thoughts?

I'm not concerned about it at all to be honest. If and when there are any rumours about some exploit I might stop updating for a bit to see, but I doubt that will be anytime soon, and even then I wouldn't want to be stuck on an early firmware missing out on future games. I mean, who cares about the 1.76 firmware hack on PS4 these days? It's taken several years for it to become worth it and the PS5 will probably have even tighter security.

I had kept my UK one on the release firmware playing only PS5 launch titles from disc. But the UK launch firmware doesn't play PS4 games at all so I had to update I could have downloaded onto USB the first version that added PS4 compatibility but with the free "Play at home" games also being available this month I updated online.

I'll never understand people who will drop £600 on a brand new console and then not update it in hopes of pirating games. It's like you can afford the console, the biggest outlay all at once but can't or won't buy games to go along with it. Just update it and support the games industry or get rid of it

It's pretty easy to understand in terms of economics, but almost seems like the boring choice instead of getting some enjoyment for your money up front.

Personally for me I'm a retro gamer and yes I have to switch for my retro games (atmosphere) but half the fun is modding the consoles myself and watching our community come up with interesting ways to exploit the hardware. I'm sure pirating will always be a part of it but for me atkeast it more about the homebrew and brilliant ideas coming from the comunity and also these forums to chat with others about.

£600? I assume we’re talking scalper prices then? That’s even worse somehow, if you’re desperate enough to pay that money, then definitely play the damn thing and enjoy it, it’s worth it. Well, I think so, I’ve not even touched my Series X since my PS5 arrived.

this is what I'd suggest too. I was going to buy a ps5, but there's something wrong with my account to where I can't buy anything on the ps store, so I don't think I'd enjoy the system knowing that.

That sucks! Have you been nagging them daily to get it sorted out. I don’t buy many digital games myself, only ones that don’t get a physical release, but I’d be less than happy if they didn’t get any account problems sorted out quickly.

yes, I tried contacting sony, and they could find nothing wrong with my account. I think it's a bug with the ps store software, because I've read of others with the same problem. whenever I try to buy something, it says "an error has occurred." I was going to go legit, starting with the ps3, but I could only make one series of purchases, then the error happened. it went on for nine days, then I finally quit. I got a refund on my original psn purchases (that's something to be thankful to sony about, because I doubt Nintendo would've done the same thing), I returned the hdd, and I got my money back for the system (didn't have to return the superslim 12GB system). I don't think anything is wrong with the system, because the same thing happens whenever I try to add funds to my account on playstation.com. someone else who had the same problem said they had to make a new account to fix the problem, but a part of me wanted to get trophies, since I have 0 of them, but if I have to switch accounts, that's going to destroy that desire, because I'll be back to 0 again once I do.

Stupid question, I know, but have you tried using PayPal instead of a card, or vice versa?

Yes, same thing happens.

Yeah, I had a feeling it might. The only other, off the wall idea I have, is via account linking. I have a feeling it might not work, but as we can’t create new accounts and transfer trophies and such, or merge PSN accounts, it’s a moonshot theory.

But if you created another Sony account - Sony Mobile/Electronics and added payment details and so on. Then linked that account to PSN, I wonder if the payment processing might also be merged?
Wild theory, I know, but what the hell :D
