Sony allegedly plans to shut down PS3, Vita and PSP online stores definitively later this year

According to a report by online outlet TheGamer, we will soon have to bid farewell to PS3, PS Vita, and PSP online stores. The report reads that "according to a source familiar with the situation (verified by TheGamer), the stores are due to be closed down from July". According to this report, the stores for the PSP and PS3 are set to permanently shut down this July 2nd. The PS Vita store will close later, on August 27th. This means that digital copies of games and/or their DLCs on those platforms will no longer be available to purchase following those dates. TheGamer also writes that Sony plans to make the news official at the end of this month.

As usual, we should take such news with a pinch of salt as they come from "a source familiar with the situation" and haven't been verified by other outlets.

I'll go with a big fat massive "Doubt" until Sony themselves announce it. Source: Someone very close to the situation (see, I can say that, too!)

And even if they did remove the ability to buy new games, they're 100% never going to just delete them from their server so you can never download them again. Fear mongering "BETTER DOWNLOAD YOUR GAMES NOW!!!" is silly.

But yeah, I'll believe it when it's announced. I don't see why they would bother shutting the stores down completely, unless absolutely no PS3 or PSP games have been sold in the last few months. They're 100% keeping them on the server basically forever (unless they decide to remove games from PS Now, their "BC solution, which is definitely not happening) and are keeping a web store regardless for PS4/PS5 games, so it makes no sense to go and stop purchases altogether. Might as well keep it running on the odd chance Johnny Appleseed buys a "retro PS3" and wants to buy some games or something down the line.

I have always bought physically for a reason. It's a shame. Obviously they have to shut it down eventually but, They really are just killing tons of old games just due to how they never rerelease 99% of them.

I know I have the unpopular opinion but I have nothing against digital games or the closing of digital stores. I think having a digital game is similar to having the disc but in a different medium. Deleting it is like throwing out the disk and accidently deleting it is like breaking the disk.

But at least, with physical, you can repurchase it from someone if your disk breaks.

But I think that shutting down the stores doesn't mean that you are locked out from your content. I believe I can still download my Wii games.

Yeah, thats the one thing that hurts it but homebrew and the ability to run backups alleviates it a bit. Trust me, I love having a disk but the convenience of not having to get up from the couch to swap disks or wait for the disk to install is too good.

Homebrew can't be taken as a virtue. Running backus as well, because not all systems can do so. All in all, I'm perfectly sure that keeping the older systems online wouldn't make that big of a dent in a company's finances. Rework the systems a bit and launch an upgrade to the consoles for them to connect to the new services and keep them living.

But that hurts the bottom line, so there's that.

It's bad enough you can't buy ps3, psp, and ps vita games from the ps store on a pc web browser anymore and now this.

I can only hope that the communities for these 3 systems have preserved every piece of content they can from those online stores be it games, updates, dlc, and more since once the stores close down, anything that's digital only on those stores that has not been preserved will most likely be gone for good.

not even remotely the same, the early ps3 had very low hdd space so if you had one of those 60-80gb ps3 you would need to constantly delete games to make space for new games,so you had no other choice, even external hdds were preety damn expensive back then ,heck even with physical discs some game installs were brutal and you would run out of space very quickly so you had to delete the install and keeping only the save file to install more games.

the difference is with discs even ps4/ps5 discs when you finished the game and deleted the install to put other games in, you can always put the disc back in and let it install, if the psn for ps3 goes totaly down your preety much dead.

Also if you ps3 hdd burns or your console dies without a repair you are screwed since without psn you cant log in, so you cant redownload to another ps3 or even use your external hdd on another ps3 since they are console locked and the new console will format it, so you loose everything with discs you can just use it on any other console if yours totally dies or your hdd gets corrupted.

I think the store stays open for redownloads of our purchased games etc. like Nintendo handels it.Shut down completly would give Sony a bunch of lawsuits and the world of digital games a bad reputation.Don't know if the industrie needs that.
