The PlayStation Store will no longer be offering movie and TV purchases/rentals

QCFtwYl.png

It seems the subscription service model is edging PlayStation out of the TV and movie online rental market. After August 31, 2021, you will no longer be able to purchase TV seasons or movies, nor will you be able to rent movies on the PlayStation Store. This change is due to Sony seeing "tremendous growth" when it comes to both ad-based and subscription-based streaming services. If you've purchased any media through the PlayStation Store in the past, you'll still be able to watch it on your PlayStation 4 or 5 and still access it after the cutoff date.

Plex is available on PS4 and PS5. Just put your movies on there and don't deal with having your videos locked into a service. Plex's player is proprietary but you control the actual video files, with no DRM.

Multiplatform too so you don’t really need to worry about file types. Just point to your media folder and go

Microsoft doesn't own a movie or tv studio like Sony does, so I doubt it.
what about the microsoft store

Until the disc rot.

Disc rot, bruv. Nothing is permanent. Your best bet is indeed buying physical media, but also creating a digital backup of it.

I have a few things I grabbed on sale but I don't go out of my way for it since I have both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video anyway.

It's probably going to be revamped as an alternate service, altogether. Sony isn't out of the streaming business entirely, but it seems that stuff like Playstation Vue are going away to make room for something new.

...Maybe? I dunno. Just guessing.

What’s wrong with plex? I have a Usenet box I have setup with OVH that automatically fetches my weekly shows and allows me to stream to all my devices wherever I am easily
plex is in control and it's not totally open source. To watch things over the internet, you need a plex account, for some devices you need to pay. Having media on storage that I own, I want to be in control. relying on plex... I'd rather not.
I do use the plex app on my tv though sometimes, free and it works ok.
Specific to the PS4, I've read the plex app isn't that great. I only used it briefly so can't give much input on that myself.

There's emby which looks interesting, and then the newest contender, jellyfin, which is totally free.

I know on my Xbox Series X, the quality of the videos purchased on the Microsoft store far exceeds the streamed editions. Better video and audio quality, longer cuts etc. It guarantees that you will have access to it should the streaming service lose the rights (Full Metal Alchemist). So I purchase most of my anime. I think Microsoft cripples the apps, but I cannot blame them. It is a pretty business savvy move.

Nintendo is eating their lunch in Japan, has been for a long time. Playstation is almost dead there, only looks good when compared to xbox which barely even exists there.

Until you forgot about them and they begin to rot
People seem to think physical disks are magical and give you some sort of ownership of more than just a license that is attached to a disk...

Depends on the service, some streaming services are certainly lower quality than others. I would have to rip the files from multiple places to tell you the difference.
