If you try to play an unsupported file type in their video players, it tells you to buy a codec pack.
My most recent example is uh- well I tried playing a .MKV video file and it asked me to pay like $5 for codecs to play the file
that is why vlc is better :)

My Windows knowledge is more than a bit rusty and stuck at about 2006.
I always installed VLC (same on Linux) and it played everything.
Thanks for explaining.

I never really wanted to bother with getting a whole different one- x3
And the windows one was the only one I was able to get running on my Nvidia GPU- after a very long time trying
Nvidia has the best color settings- but all the video players force me to use my Intel GPU

Also I just don’t pay for them- I end up converting the files

Honestly, amd is better when it comes to cpus, while nvidia is better when it comes to gpus
Intel CPUs usually work best with emulators and Nvidia GPUs work best by far.

Otherwise I likely wouldn't use either of those brands they're quite expensive lol

Oh yeah
I also prefer files that are compressed enough. But for roms I try to compress them as much as possible without losing anything important

Also, for the question, I prefer flac for music because I only have a few albums I really, really, really like saved(and by that I mean a Kanye album, and the sonic adventure 2 ost) and I want to listen to those songs in as high quality as possible

as for photos, I dont gave a favorite tbh
