Sonic the Hedgehog's voice actor is leaving the role after 10 years of work

Sonic-Colors.jpg

The voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog seems to be moving on from his role as the blue blur. Roger Craig Smith posted on Twitter saying that 10 years had been "an amazing run" and that he would be going on to new zones. He began his tenure as Sonic's voice actor starting with Sonic Colors, taking over for previous actor Jason Griffith, and would reprise the role in each of the following games including the most recent mainline title, Sonic Forces. Beyond the Twitter post, there hasn't been any other information as to who will be taking over the position.

While I never truly got used to his voice, he definitely defined a new generation for the character. Personally, Jason Griffith will always be Sonic to me in terms of the games.

Going forward, I'd honestly love to see Sega bring on Ben Schwartz full time. His energy and performance brought life to the character in the film, and I think he could do wonders for the games as well.

Jaleel White is the only Sonic VA that matters ;O;

I always preferred Griffith though, probably just because I mostly grew up with his VA more than anything. Never really liked Sonic VAs after him, but hey good luck to the guy on his other projects.

Honestly I hate Ben Schwartz as game sonic. Movie sonic worked because he was basically an ADHD kid who just happened to be sonic, but it definitely didn't feel like Sonic. Sonic should be a lot more grounded when it comes to his voice, which is why I never liked Jaleel White

Charles seems really happy to be the voice of Mario. I get the suspicion he would never want to leave the role.

also Mario doesn’t say all that much, so if Nintendo and Charles Martinet agree to it they can just use his voice clips without making any new ones. Or record a big backlog of stuff.

I'm willing to wager they'll choose Ben Schwartz as the next voice actor. He really nailed it in the Sonic movie.

That may soon change though. That Illumination Mario film is on the way. I suppose it's possible they could make it more of a visual spectacle with little talking, but I imagine we'll hear a fair share more of Mario in the movie.

I doubt it’ll be much of a precedent; Mario basically has to talk for movies and TV shows, and the only games where he says more then his basic set of vernacular afaik are Hotel Mario and the educational games which weren’t really trying to be mainline Mario games.
