I haven't played any of these games myself, but wasn't Disgaea 5 made on PS3/maybe 360 so many years ago? I know they've been porting a various assortment of the old games to various systems and platforms, but still.

Melodia and Piyori are pretty busty for a Disgaea game. The voice acting in the trailer os pretty hammy. I hope the game isn't like that.

4 was. 5 was made for modern platforms afaik.

Cant wait to play through about 5 or 6 levels then unlock Lahal and Etna and play the whole game with them, totally ignoring the new characters

Indeed lol. Although some of the main characters on other games have cool unique skills worth keeping around.

too bad they made it a switch exclusive, i hope they eventually release a complete edition for PC. I really dig the 3D style, long overdue, just like gamefreak and pokemon. I wonder if the 6 year gap between games was due to a decrease in sales that pushed them to jump into 3D or what..

I guess you'll be overwhelmed by the ammount of mechanics and gimmicks if you start playing a newer disgaea game, but besides that, i don't think the stories of each game need you to play the previous one. There's cameos from characters from older games that you might not quite understand, but those are (almost) always optional.

TLDR: you could give the original disgaea a try until this gets released, there's multiple ports. Disgaea 2 for PSP is also a great option to start IMO
