Sonic 1&2 Switch Ports, GTA:SA on PS Vita, EU VS Valve & More - Tempcast #23

podcast_art_banner_smol-png.222446

In this week's episode, we discuss the achievements in the handheld console hacking scene; specifically, two notorious ports which have been released recently. Sonic 1 and 2 (2013) received an unofficial Switch port, as well as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas getting a WIP port on the PlayStation Vita (done by the legendary TheFlow none the less). We also discuss the recent court proceedings in the EU concerning geoblocking games by Valve and other publishers. Finally, we touch upon the recent report that Valve might be working on new games and why this isn't actually real news.

Sonic Colors is actually a good game, but the DS and Wii game are different games. I prefer the DS game mostly. Heck I bought the Wii game and... never actually played it? What a waste of money.

Sonic Generations is okay, it got a pinball DLC, unlockable Sonic 1 and a few levels that are really good.

Sonic Forces... is not terrible but... is like they couldn't decide between making a Sonic Generations 2, a new Sonic game or a game with a custom character. the DLC is terrible, is just playing a few levels with Shadow, that's it.

Sonic Mania Plus is the best Sonic game made this century.

The 3DS can run DS and 3DS games and most GBA games. 16 systems emulations is not perfect unless you go for the Euro versions that have a slower framerate and so they work better.

The New HD whatever 3DS/2DS have better hardware so they emulate 16 bit systems quite well, plus the bigger screen helps for those games.

However a Vita can run PSP and Vita games. It can run PS1 and (very few) PS2 games ( and it requires overclocking for most of those few you can play) and while the 3DS is better at GBA games, the Vita can still run them.

Ir can also run Dreamcast games and Nintendo 64 games. However you may wanna use Euro versions of the Dreamcast games, if possible as those have a slower framerate and the Vita is just not powerful enough for the USA versions to run smoothly.

16 bit systems do run better that in the 3DS/2DS.

Unlike the PSP the Vita does have a dual shock controller so Ape Escape (PS1) actually works on it, same for any other game that requires that.

What else? Unfortunately the 2DS/3DS is way easier to hack, no matter the model. As long as you have not updated the firmware every model is hackable.

Overall between a HD 2ds/3ds and a Vita the choice comes to basically what games do you want yo run. The DS, 3DS and GBA had a lot of great games and those will run, with a few GBA exceptions, quite well in the HD 2DS/3DS.

But if you want PSP games and some Vita games (unfortunately a lot of Vita ports are badly done) and to play PS1 and very few PS2 games the Vita is for you.

Of course there is also Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast emulation on the Vita.
Did gta sa get finished for the vita?

The Android to Vita port does work but not perfectly. So the status is "It works but there is stuff to fix."

One thing I'd like to see on the Sonic disassemblies, is to be able to have all Sonic 1, 2, 3&K and CD all accessible with the same app.
Like a Sonic Classic Collection of sorts based on the Android disassemblies, where you can choose any of the 4 games at will, with all of their perks and features untouched.

Also...
A Sonic 3 graphics for all Sonic 1, 2 and CD would be nice too :P
And a Sonic Classic Heroes-like mode for all games would be bollocks.

That game does not exist, do you mean this?

Nope.
Sonic Classic Heroes is a ROM hack that combines both Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, and also allows you to play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles (Team Sonic) at the same time, changing which one you control at any given time.
Yo can also play as the full Team Chaotix in it.

Check it out, it's in Sonic Retro.

Sonic SMS Remake remakes the Sega Master System Sonic 1 to add Tails, Knuckles, Ray and Mighty. Has three different modes (Including an Eggman mode that's the boss rush mode) and actual bonus levels to get the chaos Emeralds.

There is also a version based on Sonic 2.

You can find both games at the Sonic SMS Remake blog. The engine is also available to download and several other games (mostly demos) have been made with it including a Sonic 3 Genesis Master System mode and a port of Sonic Pocket Adventure.

OK, I believe a Vita can run its native games, PSP, and PS1, but PS2?

I was wrong, running PS2 games is not as smoth as I believed it was in other words very few PS2 games can be played on the Vita.

You also need to overclock your Vita for a lot of those.

I was gonna say! That might've changed the Vita from being a "but I already have a PSPGo" to a "HOLY SHIT! THAT'S AWESOME! I GOTTA GO AND GET THE BEST RED ONE OFF OF EBAY THAT HOPEFULLY ISN'T IN MINT CONDITION!"

I guess DC emulation is also being attempted with it? But what little I did see didn't look too promising. If only Sony just let people use micro SD cards as opposed to asking people to sell their kidneys to buy their own proprietary cards... :/

First, Dreamcast roms even while uncompressed are less than 2 GB. I think is 1.3 compared to the Gamecube 1.5?

Second there is sdtovita that while not perfect ir works.

Third, Dreamcast emulation is never gonna be perfect but the emulator, Flycast, keeps getting updated and fourth, use the Euro Roms if possible as they have a slower framerate.

First try this:

-Delete the Retroarch data folder which is.. in "Ux0:data". I think?
-Freshly Reinstall RetroArch and Flycast
-Make sure you have the Dreamcast bios (named as "dc_boot.bin" and "dc_nvmem.bin") within (Ux0:data) "RetroArch/System/dc" folder.
..You can find the bios at various places all over the web.

Then go here:
