Are there any good flashcards still available that can run any ds and 3ds games? Or any flashcards that can only run ds or 3ds games? Been looking for a while, any help would be great.

Everyone's going to tell you to softmod for 3DS games and also, the only good DS flash cart I know of is the R4 Gold 2020.
Does the R4 Gold 2020 have a time bomb?

Also I have a cfw 2ds xl, but i kinda would like to find a flashcard that could play ds games and one for 3ds games or ever better one that can play both ds and 3ds games.

The truth is that 3DS flashcards are really outdated and expensive. The best way to play 3DS games is to install them directly as .cia files. That being said, the 3DS flashcards I know are Gateway 3DS and Stargate. (not recommended)

DS flashcarts aren't strictly necessary as you can use TWiLightMenu to play most DS games. Otherwise I'd suggest getting any recent random R4 flashcart really.

Hmm haven't heard of this thanks I'll check it out.

Also as far as time bomb goes, I don't know if the 2020 R4 has one or not. I'm guessing that it doesn't. All I know is, all my other DS flash carts are a pain in the butt, maybe they don't support 64GB microsd or they are time bombed or something else, who knows.

99% of those XXX in one ds carts all over Ebay are actually Ace3ds+ flashcards with the sticker replaced, and they mostly work. Just copy the ace3ds kernel to your sdcard, and swap. They have no time bomb.

If you somehow get one that's not, and it seems to have the timebomb, then get ysmenu from retrogamefan thread, and use that.

As long as they are formatted properly, 64 and 128 gig sdcards will work. Windows doesn't like to format them properly.

The "official Panasonic sdcard formatter" is a good choice except that it won't format past 32 gb as fat32 either, and will insist on exFAT, which won't work.. i think people usually use guiformat to format their 64 and 128 gig scdards.

but the official formatter tends to make sdcards load faster, which matters for games like Metroid Prime Pinball.

ANY current r4isdhc.com and r4i-sdhc.com cart will have a timebomb. the actual r4i gold cards say r4ids.cn on them. they are NOT actually colored gold. they also do NOT have a year on them.

If the menu look like this it HAS a time bomb.

There are a few r4i-sdhc.com carts that do not have a time bomb. the oldest ones that don't support 1.85b DO support 1.12d which is free of timebomb (the team realized the newer firmware wouldn't work so they released a "final" non time-bomb firmware for that cart.

No idea if they will release 1.85c

Not sure why you're bumping a thread that hasn't been replied to in almost a month.

I haven't heard of this before. But formatting is formatting, and the only difference I can imagine is the cluster size, which you can also configure with other formatting tools.

I've had it personally make a difference when used on a card that was formatted from the factory. It made metroid prime pinball work much better. I believe it may be something to do with alignment as well as cluster size.

ahh. found the answer. yes, skipping the protected area DOES actually matter.

This is because the flash controller in the sdcard expects the file table to start right after the protected area, and handles writes there differently, because of the small amounts of data that have to be written there.

The cluster size also matters too. SOME flash controllers in sdcards are smart enough to work out that "oh, this is where the file table is" and in that case it doesn't matter, but many just assume it's right after the protected area. And this only works for fat32, and up to 32 gigs. Larger sizes tend to cause performance issues, as i'm sure people have noticed.
