Sorry but that statement is just pure Sony fanboy bollocks and i bet has come from a boy not even a pretend man
As a 30 year old man in 2006, i was very able to afford both consoles at launch and as previously posted the 360 was my main console of choice during that gen. Yes i also had one of the early HD tvs to play them on too before anyone asks....
The PS3 had its moments, yes, i will admit that, but it is a generally accepted thing that the 360 won that gen.
Now i know this next statement is gonna get my in trouble with the Sony fanboys but......
The main advantage Sony has in every gen is the passionate fanboys that are blinded by loyalty. (Its similar to the Apple vs Android debate, they both have their absolute lunatic fanboys that will argue over every little detail, but i digress...) These Sony fans will blindly buy whatever PS Sony release even if its crap, Sony could literally release a broken console and it would still sell in the millions, this is what the Sony marketing of past gens has created, a blind loyalty that will never admit when its wrong, beaten or similar. Yes XBox has its fanboys too but imo most of the flaming and pointless arguing in any forum comes from the Sony side...
Last gen was a different story as MS really fucked up from the start with the XBone and basically handed Sony a lead they were never going to relinquish.
This gen the argument is honestly pointless as both consoles are very evenly matched, yet the PS5 stock shortages are always in the news with very little mention of the X. I put that down to the same people just blindly moving to PS5 just because they had a PS4 last gen without actually considering any alternative.
And by the way the only people i know who actually have PS5 right now are all aged in the 13-21 age bracket and every one of them was bought by their parents.......
As i said in a previous post i have all the Sony and MS consoles going right back as i am a collector but right now i cannot justify buying either of the new gen..... i just don't think its worth it....yet.

Anyway back on topic... do i think online play should be free? No i don't, it costs to keep a service like Live or PSN up and running and as was proven in the PS3 era, free services definitely attracts more hackers.... just look at the PS3 cod games, the normal game lobbies almost became unplayable at one point due to the amount of modded lobbies and the ease of hosting one.
MS has always banned people and done everything they can to keep cheaters of Live and for the most part have succeeded, Sony have done the same on PS4 as it was a paid service and people wont pay if they cant play because of cheaters.... PS3 was free online so imo Sony didn't really care about it as it wasn't a source of revenue for them, hence it being over run with cheaters and hackers.
