my friend is trying to get me to play dragon quest xi, but I'd like to play this game as well. I own both. I'm on sleep mode with dkc3.

Only things from a true Zelda game it felt lacking in were proper dungeons and a hookshot. Maybe iron boots and/or the ability to swim underwater. Otherwise felt like a true Zelda experience through and through, like seriously of all the Zelda games that has retained the spirit of the very first entry in the series, BOTW feels like it succeeds the most at that (but I'm aware that most Zelda experiences since have been instead measured against the playstyles of ALTTP and OOT). I'd like to see some missing enemies like Poes and Redeads, hopefully they'll be in the sequel. And I will concede that the game missed a core gimmick that every Zelda title tends to have (manipulating time, the seasons, turning to a werewolf, shrinking, traveling through the sea or the sky, etc.), but I think as an entry title to the new open world Zelda, it probably was best not to have one of those kinds of mechanics from the start. Wouldn't be surprised if the sequel had any such mechanic though.
this but
you forgot the any order mechanics introduced in ALBW
i am not really a fan of this style at all
it made both games too easy IMO
i think i would like to see happy medium and a throw back to the OG zelda
the dungeons were to be completed in a linear fashion however there some dungeons that you could enter early
and you could do some out of order but you could not visit and complete any dungeon at any time like in ALBW
and entering the later dungeons out of order ie too early was suicide , but still could be done
i'd like to see something like that , mostly linear ,needing to get items before you can reach certain areas and dungeons

The gaem should have had at least the 9 dungeons plus the divine beasts and the shrines
if not 18 dungeons the world just seems so empty and vast
and not much surprised to found while exploring , not too many moments of awe like wow i just found this dungeon
the world just felt too empty and boring , there should have been more structures besides just being all empty wilderness

I have 2 major problems with the game.
1. Lack of good dungeon design and lack of interesting and distinct aesthetics for each dungeon. The dungeons most of the time devolve into "do thing here", "rotate", or "do thing then rotate". Majora's Mask, by contrast, utilized unique mechanics for each of their dungeons, even if they were sometimes underutilized or annoying (go to hell, great bay temple). This and the lack of distinct aesthetic differences between Divine Beasts and shrines means that all of the puzzle sections of the game blend together.
2. Lack of movement abilities. The lack of dungeon items that improve movement or give you a nice new way to attack means that the dungeons feel inconsequential besides making the final Gannon fight easier and getting a free revive here and a magic bubble there. While I do think that dungeon items would have made the game more linear, I personally think it would have been way more invested in the exploration of the world, and that probably would have made me use the stamp system a lot more, marking places with treasure or something that I cannot reach.
Ultimately, however, BOTW is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. It has amazing exploration, anointing the player with a variety of rewards. The soundtrack is amazing, with beautiful flourishes of piano, and an artstyle that future proofs itself as much as Windwaker. I love weapon durability, as it forces you to get creative in tense scenarios when your weapon unexpectedly breaks. Anyway, that was my BOTW rant.

Wrong. I Completely disagree. It is an amazing game. The open world is so fun and the quests are awesome.
as i said, its a good game, but bad zelda game. botw just have some elements of past zelda games so its called zelda like characters, plot somewhat, some items like master sword etc.. and they also tossed out a lot of elements that makes zelda a zelda, because that actually why i like zelda in first place like not being able to jump making for a different movement mechanic. progressing slowly, building up. dungeons as complex levels, not being open world so you can unlock the puzzle that developers intended, kinda like rubics cube. intention is to get all colors right, but its scrambeled..
but other than that its just a good non zelda game if you exclude those. To me it feels more like every other open world game out there.

So when i hear zelda thats what i actually expect, a zelda, not a dark souls or gta 5 or idk...similar games.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

it's definitely a different experience for a Zelda game and I really appreciate that!
thats also how i feel, i also apreciate different experience, but its not really a zelda game is its core.
Say you like chocolate. you eat it and you want another one, but you get strawberry instead, yeah its nice, youd say thanks and enjoy, but that doesnt mean you still dont like and want chocolate. something like that :)

so i still didnt get my chocolate but i was told how strawberry is better. its not, its just not bad. for me. and its not like its a new invention, other did it already. market is over-saturated with strawberries. nothing revolutionary. but it is something that i dont really want but...thanks?

that's actually my fear. I pirated the game on the wii u, but I bought it on the switch. it's a digital copy too. I haven't played it yet, because I'm afraid I won't like the open world aspect. I usually like my games to have a plot and be linear or whatever, which is why I usually prefer Japanese games over Western ones.

Do you people who play zelda games and dont like it enjoy the windwaker game more?

I just ask, because maybe I would like the game then, because I really dont like windwaker (hd). I find it somewhat clunky to control, pressing often the wrong button (or accidentally jumping in the water) and dont know half the time where to go or what to do (maybe related to the fact I took long breaks between playing the game). Also, besides the first and second game (only played them as a kid at my neighbors house in the early 90s) I didn't play any other zelda game so I dont care much about the world, characters or general expectations how a zelda game should play.

It's certainly an expansion on the series and an obvious attempt at recreating it in this style. Zelda games have never been open world before so I can allow them some breathing space in this fisrt run attempt at it. For instance, I kinda agree that there was a lot of unused/sparce areas.... I live in Scotland and can tell you that is true of open country side so it's a real world reflection there. Obviously hardware restrictions played a part here also with Wii U and a relatively untested Switch at the time. Having enemies in the shrines would've helped give them more of a dungeon feel though.

Would you rather they gave you the linear experience that your used to? "here, have your green suit, have your sword and follow these instructions" lol Nintendo have never been about that and reinvention is what they like to do. Im certainly hoping that for all they maybe got wrong with BOTW, they will certainly rectify in future releases if this style is to be the new norm for the series. I have a feeling BOTW 2 will be more of a spin off type and not as big or expansive... Kinda like how Majoras Mask was a sequel to Ocarina but nit as big in size and the only direct sequel in the series I can think of right now. I could be completely wrong on both counts there of course!!

All in all I do know where you are coming from but I really enjoyed the game overall and would say it's a worthy Zelda game very reminiscent of the first NES game in the exploration aspect and you had to find everything for yourself but in glorious modern 3D and certainly bigger.

It gives me hope for future installments.

If it wasn't so frustrating having to go back to the menus so often it would have been a legit 9.5/10 game, if not a full 10. The menu system was originally meant to be on the gamepad and thus not interrupt the flow so much. I think they could have alleviated this problem by raising the durability of items so you wouldn't have to swap them out as often, but maybe they just didn't have time to balance that out before release.

What it comes down to is that it's a great game that could have been better, and could easily have been so with a few tweaks. It's just hard to accept it as it is since it was so close to perfection.

yes absolutely. I enjoyed windwaker but it was not the best zelda experience. Botw is some sort of skyrim. It just has the Name Zelda but it is no zelda Game.it feels like a spinoff and has a lot of weaknesses. It might have been a good Game but its a horrible zelda game.

Taking in account that it builds up over the original Zelda concept... i would say it is the best Zelda out there.

i just find it hilarious that when Skyward Sword came out everyone was asking for the same game to be what we finally got in Breath of the Wild and when Breath of the Wild came out the same people who were the loudest about wanting change in the series were now going like "Why you changed Zelda into something that isn't Skyward Sword for?" Good old Zelda Cycle, you have given us nothing we asked for but everything we could have possibly want.

I've played all the Zelda game franchises, and i have to agree. Breath of the Wild is a good type of game, but it lacks a lot of elements that makes a Zelda game exciting and great to play. I've played and completed Breath of the Wild, and i didnt have the experience that i did with the other Zelda games. Going into a dungeon, solving puzzles, getting a new item to use for the next dungeon is what i missed a lot in Breath of the wild. The whole shrine thing was def not for me. What was great was the whole open world thing, it would have been amazing, if you go venturing from place to place to finish a dungeon related to water, earth, fire, air. I understand that Nintendo did something different, but was kinda dissapointed in how the game turned to be.

Easily one of the most imperfect games I have ever played. No dungeons is a right pisser of course, and the durability, fukkin hell fire.... (it does also feel a bit too empty at times). It actually feels unfinished in my opinion! Have you seen the coral reefs? So much detail in them, surely the plan was to add swimming! And that's just one thing I can think of.

BUT.......despite all that, it's also one of the best games I've ever played! I grew up with the original Zelda, which BoTW actually feels closest to, so love this to bits!

Hah, so true: the devs must feel like giving up surely! Slaughtered for creating the Toon Link style in Wind Waker, so they created the darker aesthetic in Twilight Princess ...slaughtered for doing that, so they did a mixture with SS, then got whinged at for making it too focused and linear. It's a wonder they've not gone mad...

that's just my opinion...

So what do you think about it?
The thing about Breath of the Wild is that its finally expressing the original gameplay style the series wanted. The original Zelda on NES was very open and that was its goal. Though after each installment they had to close things off just due to hardware limitations.
