DSiWare Delisted, Netflix Gone From 3DS And Wii U, Switch Pro Leaked & more - Tempcast #21

podcast_art_banner_smol-png.222446

2021 starts with a bang for Nintendo, beginning the year with a mass purge of DSiWare titles in the eShop. In this week's episode, we discuss what exactly might've led to this, and whether or not it was Nintendo's decision after all. Seemingly in retaliation, Netflix has announced that they will be discontinuing its services on the 3DS and Wii U systems. A new datamine of the Switch firmware has been found to have references two unknown Switch models, or so SciresM from Atmosphere claims, we debate heavily on whether or not a Switch 'Pro' might have an OLED screen. Finally, we discuss some more minor topics that deserved a spot this week - such as Microsoft attempting to purchase Nintendo in the early 2000s, the list of 'free' games going up this month on various services, and Lenovo's new handheld gaming 'device'.

Withered thinking with lateral technology...

The Switch Pro be nowhere near the raw processing leap people are expecting ala 3DS to n3DS. Nor will you get any DLSS/AI scaling either. Nope, at best you'll the mCable smoothing tech outboard paired with a sideways step in specification to whatever equivalent chip sets are currently being produced along with tweaks to the speed profiles in docked/portable mode for that "Pro" feeling.

One thing I'm certain of however is the build quality will be leaps and bounds ahead of the cheapo plastic and overall fragile feel of the OG Switch. I'm talking about the same leap from the OG DS to the DS Lite in terms of aesthetic and quality and that will be the main selling point because a lot of Ns first draft handhelds are cash grabs from paid Beta testers before the "proper" version is unveiled to boost the product cycle.

*It prints money*

The Original DS may look like a toy but is much less breakable that the DS lite.

What you can say in favor of the Switch is that it already has more games that the DS, the DSi and the 3DS put together.

It was literally a prototype they rushed to the market unfinished after Sony announced the PSP and Nintendo hedged their bets with the "third pillar" nonsense because even they didn't expect it to take off the way it did. Contrast it to the SP (released just one year earlier) and you can see the line of evolution to the DSL which is what they'd wanted to do once cost allowed/if Sony hadn't decided to get into the handheld market.

Same way they rushed the GBC to market to retain share against the Wonderswan. Nintendo are very reactive like that and prefer to take their sweet time unless prodded.

Switch wise, I can't comment as I found the build quality atrocious on day one and expected the DSL style refresh that wasnt made out of super cheap plastic and trash quality everything (remember this was before any of the joycon stuff, case warping, dock scratching etc.. just day one impression) before it would be worth looking at.

It appears to have flourished but its got a ton of ports, loads of shovelware and a few really unique experiences whereas the 3/DS libraries are as unique as they come and filled with good old fashioned fun games.

Are you talking about the Switch, the Playstation or the PS2?
