The game still uses full-width characters.

Not really sure if the eboot controls that or some other script.

Yeah, it does. The modified eboot.bin just shifts the characters to make it more readable.
It's not the best solution but admittedly patching the game to use a variable-width font is out of the scope of my current skillset.
Though I would be happy to include it into the project if anybody wants to implement this.

Time for a little update:

The basic hacking in order to insert the dialogue lines is figured out and done. Huge thanks to
@Gil_Unx for creating the header.bin patch script and helping me figuring out the process to create the smallest possible patch.
We were able to insert an early version of the whole script and create a xdelta patch of around 1,7MB. While the size will increase for sure after modifying other parts of the game it's reassuring to know that we will be able to distribute a small patch when everything is done.

However there are some things that are not preventing us from releasing the patch in the future but would nice to be implement nonetheless:
1. Replacing japanese textures in the ISO:
ZZT3 uses three picture formats: tpl, tm2 and png. While to last two don't pose any problem at all, we are currently not able to decompress the image from the tpl files, modifying them and recompress them afterwards. This results in us being unable to replace large parts of the menu.
We will provide a workaround by creating a texture replacement pack for usage with PPSSPP but unfortunaly this won't work on real hardware and is quite a messy way to do things.
Help wanted:
If you know how to deal with the tpl files (not to be confused with the tpl format the GC / Wii uses) please get in touch. Currently this is our biggest issue and any help would be appreciated.

2. Replacing the fixed-width font with a variable-width font

Currently we are using the game's default font and shifting it in order to make it readable. This works but the text would be a lot cleaner if the game is using a variable-width font.
Help wanted:
Please contact us if you are able to create some ASM code that deals with this issue.

I updated the first post with the text above.

Wow, I've been looking forward to this. Between this and Yakuza Black Panther, I'm finally getting all my PSP games in English :)

Is anybody working on Senritsu no Stratus or Nanodiver (I can ask, right?)

Tpl are compressed with lz_01(puyo),
The header maybe like this:
4 bytes : 434d5053 (CMPS)
4 bytes : maybe type,1 for compressed 0 for uncompress
4 bytes : The uncompressed file size
4 bytes : null
0x10~: The start of the compressed data.

For quick decompress you can use quickbms.

A result can be opened using noesis.
Just packaged TM2.

I tried to recompress it before,
use the puyo tool,
I think it works fine.
But the compress results are a little bigger.

Quickbms and puyo tools were indeed the missing pieces in the puzzle. Thanks again!
We are now able to modify the images and can replace the files directly in the ISO so we don't have to resort using texture replacements in ppsspp.

For anyone wondering about the details:

Since the game uses LZ01 for compression you can just feed quickbms with a little script to decompress a .tpl file of the game.
This will give you a binary file with one or more TM2 files inside. You can easily detect them with the TM2 header and just have to split the binary into single TM2 files to edit them with a program of your choice.
After you are done with that you have to merge the TM2 files to one binary again, compress them with puyo tools and replace the the header of the compressed file with the one the game uses.

I just wanted to let you all know that we have shifted our communications towards a discord server so even though there are no new posts in this thread, we continue to work on the project in the background.
Stay tuned, we're making good progress.

G'day there, I'd like to join your server. I'm willing to help you guys translate the Japanese, I can even ask help from my friends who are fluent in Japanese to speed things up.

Cool, it's not totally abandoned.
Far from it. I'm playing through the game with a rough draft of the script right now and it's already in a playable state.
We currently have a total of 7 people on the discord server working on various aspects of the game so be assured the we continue to work on this project.

I registered just to thank you for your hard work! I loved ZZT3 even if I had to play it in japanese following an English guide. I can't wait to play it again in English! Thank you very much!

Hey, I wanted to give you all a small update:
We recently completed a full walkthrough with a rough draft of the script and resolved some problems along the way. So from a technical view the game is now fully playable with our hacks inserted.

We are currently in the process of editing the script. The translation we already had from the old project was way too literal so we decided to give it a massive overhaul.
This might take a while so don't panic when we're not updating this thread for a while. We will make a public announcement when the script is done.

Help wanted:
We need help with editing the menu images so please contact us if you have some skills with Photoshop/Gimp and want to help out. We'll provide you with the translations and the images so all you would have to do is inserting the translated text into the images and send it back to us.

Damn you guys work fast! Wish I could help but my photoshop skills are a bit rusty I haven't touched the application for years, so I wouldn't be of much help!
