Still no reason at the mo to switch to Atmos, for games that require firmware above 11.0 there are patched versions out there for some games.

Why are sigpatches OK but not XCI mounting?
The former is much easier to develop than the latter. Many developers don't like piracy, and those who do don't see XCI support as worth the trouble. I know I wouldn't. If/when SX OS is declared dead, perhaps someone will step up, but I wouldn't count on it.

When newer games/updates/DLC start using newer software development kits, updating to a newer system version will be required to play that game/update/DLC. If SX OS still hasn't provided newer support updates by that time, you will have to use Atmosphere to play those newer games/updates/DLC.

by then maybe TX will surprise everyone with an update. they released one update after they were busted, why not another...

Things have only gotten worse, not better, since TX's legal woes began. This includes, but isn't limited to, problems with online services such as Stealth Mode and forum emails. And, of course, there's the fact that there hasn't been a support update released for 11.0.1, despite it being 36 days (and counting) since the minor update was released.

To contrast, Atmosphere (the repository from which TX steals code) released a compatibility update only one day after 11.0.1 was released. Most people can see the writing on the wall. At worst, TX is dead. At best, TX's future is uncertain.

XCI mounting is the ONLY good reason to stick to SXOS right now.
THIS! I have lots of games on XCI format which Atmos doesn't support and cba to convert/get them on NSP. I never understood why SX OS is the only way to launch XCI games... is it because they invented this format all together and locked all the how-to behind closed source ? Looks strange since this format is heavily used on the so called 'scene'. Can someone explain what is the difficulty of releasing some sort of 'sigpatches' that we already have for NSP but for XCI, can't it just be 'borrowed' from SX OS ?

Long story short,
XCI is the cart dump. on sxos, you can mount the xci like a real game cart.
Nsp is essentially the install data for the game.

To install the a game, the sigpatch is required bypass the signature checks otherwise the switch will know something is wrong and won't let you launch/install the game. This is completely different then creating a way to mount the XCI cart.

To answer the question why sigpatch is ok and xci mounting is not, xci mounting is purely for privacy which as the previous poster said, devs are not into doing. Sigpatch is ok because they aren't purely privacy focus as this allows users to install any nsp including homebrew related materials which is totally legal.

They didn't invent the format, its a format comming from nintendo for gamecard images that can be flashed to dev cards for example, as far as I know.
The reason why its not implemented by anyone yet, it that its much harder to implement, since you need to patch the filessystem module quite a bit more and emulate the gamecard.
I think with the FS reimplementation of atmosphere by the end of the year, somebody will probably pick it up, and implement xci loading there, since it will be much easier by then.
Sadly that will still not allow self dumped backups to be used online again, which was my main use case, before firmware 9.x blocked it.

You mean piracy? What about people which backup their legit gamecard into XCI ?

One can only hope I guess... it is still odd that SX OS is called out by many people for being a subpar and stealing code and whatnot yet they have XCI loading since ever which makes me believe that it would not be that hard at all, but I don't really know the technical details so.

oops, yes.

I suppose, to convert the cart and install is always an option hence no real reason to go through all the work in creating something "legal" to make it work.
IMO its easier to deal with updates this way anyways....

It goes back to, its not about hard or not. Most devs don't want to go down that road do to legality issues. (the 3 big guys at tx is a great example.)

its as simple as dragging and dropping the files to your sdcard and push another payload....

For NSP files, you just need some small signature patches that disable certain security checks in Horizon OS. For XCI files, you'd have to develop an XCI loader from the bottom up. The former is much easier than the latter. Considering you can play everything using NSP files, an XCI loader just isn't worth the work for most people.

  1. Download Atmosphere and put it onto your SD card
  2. Download fusee-primary (next to Atmosphere)
  3. Download these signature patches
  4. Put the signature patches onto your SD card
  5. Boot the system using fusee-primary

If I knew how to code, I'd do it. I'd need a private host, and would have to release the patches anonymously without credit, but I'd do it. I'd release it on USB drives cleverly "dropped" randomly downtown if I had to, but I can't code, I wouldn't even know where to begin, LOL.

TBH it's kinda weird to consider sigpatches 'legal' and even post them here on the forum while XCI loading may be borderline 'ilegal'. I think nintendo was after TX because they were literally selling and making money out of it, else I do not see why they wouldn't treat TX the same way they treat Atmos.

Because the signature patches aren't illegal. While TX method involves modifying a firmware and using Nintendo's IP to accomplish this.

Their XCI loader uses some of Nintendo’s code while also circumventing games’ DRM out of the box. (Even being advertised as a piracy solution)

Atmosphere does not use any of Nintendo’s code nor do they provide patches necessary to circumvent game DRM.
This is why (so far) Nintendo turns a blind eye to Atmosphere.

I do agree though that it’s weird sigpatches can be distributed here considering their intended purpose.

I don't know much about code and I am not sure what is involved in coding a file to support latest updates but the result in the end (the boot.dat file) is quite small. Is this really that complicated to update the file ? Isn't anyone capable of taking over this coding task ?

Well without the source code, no... Not without starting over from scratch. I'm kind of surprised Atmosphere isn't compiled into a single file too, to be honest... Would make updating much less confusing.

You mean cracking SX OS as a whole ? That's a different matter than just making an XCI Loader for Atmos, besides you would still be stuck on the latest supported SX OS firmware unless you also intended to keep updating SX OS on your own.

I doubt an XCI loader will ever be available outside of SXOS.

3DS never got a .3ds loader. .cia was awful and it was horrendously slow with large .cia files to point that people would batch install overnight, compared to just chucking large .3ds on an sd card in a couple of minutes and we still never got one.

I agree. XCI mounting is the ONLY good reason to stick to SXOS right now. Having a hard disk with the biggest games stored there in custom xci format (game+update+DLCs) is just unbeatable. Unfortunately no one seems interested to release a way to achieve that on Atmosphere, which I find strange. To me, it's not much different to having sigpatches available freely. Why are sigpatches OK but not XCI mounting?
You got the answer, Atmosphere cant beat SXOS. only advantage against SXOS Atmosphere has is free and people love get everything for free. LOL
