I could use some advice-

I recently ordered but soon to receive a n3dsxl running 11.6.0-39U. It is modded with cfw and homebrew and preloaded with a bunch of games. In the description it states 'not to ever use Nintendo's shop because it could also mess up the preloaded modded games'.

Once I receive it, I was planning on having it 'factory reset' and updating it. I have no intention to use any of those games since I have my own physical games I want to play on it and already own a nn2dsxl that's been modded, I am only worried about going online with it.

What do you all think? Should I factory reset it and update the firmware or just manually remove the games and update the cfw mod to at least keep it modded and current. I'd like to eventually go online with it and play games online, so I definitely plan to connect my account to it.

Thanks for the input.

Factory resetting actually won't remove your CFW; if I were you, I'd factory reset it, update the CFW, and just use the system like normal; get fun things like cheats and custom themes around so you can play with those if you so wish

You're safe to go online with a modded system. Just don't go online and use cheats, and don't go online on games that have been leaked (aka the early build of Pokemon Moon that you won't find easily lol).

If you do somehow get banned, you just need a LocalFriendCodeSeed_B replacement. While that file isn't exactly supposed to be shared (if I recall correctly?) I'm sure you could find someone willing to let you use one of theirs; lots of people here have multiple systems laying around

Once you get your console, first check what Luma CFW version it has (that is, pressing SELECT button on boot). If it's 8.0 or above, then update Luma, as said here:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/updating-b9s.html (beggining from Section III)

And when you update Luma, you can update then your console to the latest version without problem (in order to access to online services).

Finally, about formatting the console, you can do it if you want, and the modification won't disappear at all.

Thank-you so much guys! I think that is what I'll do, I'll update the current CFW to the latest LUMA, do a factory reset and then update the console.

So once you CFW a 3DS there is no going back?

There is a way to uninstall CFW, but it's recommended against because it can cause the console / certain features (like DS mode) to brick -- especially if you don't know what the previous owner did to the console.

mmm do not try to remove the cfw you could damage the console, update the Luma and make a Backup of the Nand and the DPS as per tutorial, once done you can use it safely if the change was done well, copy the files of the sd are also important and marked which console the files are, perhaps by compressing them in a read-only file and copying them to various devices as a backup, saving the crc or md5 file to check their integrity.

Hey everyone,

So after finally finding the time to update the current CFW to the latest LUMA, while I had the micro SD card loaded on my computer I was browsing through the contents to remove some of the unnecessary clutter such as photos and screenshots (I was careful and didn't remove any necessary files), none of this content is mine what so ever so I'm looking to remove what is unneeded or I won't be using moving forward.

I was going through some of the other folders and wasn't sure what else is safe to remove. A lot of the content in the '3ds' folder is what I think is data for Homebrew and apps I don't plan to use. I want to do everything legally, since I have my own physical games and content under my NNID.

Could you guys help me verify what I can remove off the SD to create more space for other content. I uploaded some photos to my post for reference. I still plan to reset the console back to factory and do an official system update.

ALSO
Since I am using the nn3dsxl and not 2dsxl could you all possibly recommend a great ftp homebrew to use with my 3ds since it is a bit of trouble removing the back plate and all just to make it easier. Thank you so much everyone.

- DCIM contains photos taken on the 3DS. Back 'em up then delete 'em. They shouldn't take too much space unless you took tons of photos and videos though.
- gm9, particularly /gm9/out/, may contain NAND backups and game dumps, which could be very large, depending on what you have in there.

Everything else is negligible, or can be removed via System Settings -> Data Management -> Nintendo 3DS.

If you don't care for anything on the SD card you can also wipe your SD card entirely, get boot.firm and boot.3dsx on root of SD (https://github.com/LumaTeam/Luma3DS/releases), then follow https://3ds.hacks.guide/finalizing-setup .

You can use MicroSD Management from the Data Management settings, it's built in. Faster than FTP.

The seller doesn't know what he's talking about. Opening the eShop will never mess up anything you have installed.

It won't uninstall anything but it'll mess up DLC tickets sometimes, if you own some DLC but not all DLC for a game legitimately

Thank you very much to everyone that helped. I was able to remove unnecessary clutter, reset back to factory settings, update the console, reinstall homebrew launcher and missing cias. Although it was a bit of a task to get it going, I was even able to set up microSD Management to Move Files on my Windows PC (just had to do a bit of google research on the SMB protocol).

It all works like a charm now.
