Going back to basics: leaving PC gaming for consoles

gbatemp_title_banner_back_to_basics_pc_ps5.jpg

In what I can only feel like what was some hybrid mixture of a stroke of complete luck and sappy-movie-tier holiday miracle generosity, I find myself with a PlayStation 5 right in time for the holidays. It’s a sad state that merely buying a console has become a heroic feat, and yet, that fact makes it all the more exhilarating to be part of the next console generation. So, what better to do with this powerhouse system, than play Assassin’s Creed II; a game that’s over 11 years old, and originally released two console generations ago?

Backwards compatibility is one of the greatest features of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series line, letting players go back and experience an entire enhanced backlog of games while waiting for the heavy-hitting “next-gen” games to release, or while waiting for Cyberpunk 2077 to be in a playable state. Add to the fact that many of the games from the PlayStation 4’s library consisted of touched-up PlayStation 3 remasters in the form of Heavy Rain Remastered, Dishonored: Definitive Edition, The Yakuza Collection--every “trilogy”, “collection”, “legendary/definitive/ultimate/special” edition, and so many, many more; you could easily have a hundred PS4 games, none of them originating from that system’s own generation.

image0.jpg

In fact, I’ve yet to actually play a single PlayStation 5 game on my PS5. Perhaps it would be seen as bizarre, but as an ex-PC player, and only ever having owned the original PS4 and not the Pro, my favorite part about the PS5 is its ability to play older games at higher framerates or better quality. Games that I easily ignored on the base PlayStation 4 due to their performance have transformed into titles that I find myself wishlisting in hopes of nabbing them on sale at a later date. Even more exciting is that, as opposed to PC games which get dramatic price cuts seasonally, once a console game has been out for a while, the physical version tends to undergo a permanent price drop. It may not be as steep of a discount, but it’s affordable, and doesn’t require waiting around to be sniped during a perfect sale; the ideal combination for someone who’s just gotten a PS5 and is too impatient to wait for holiday price cuts just yet, or might have missed the best deals during Black Friday.

While I still hold an appreciation for PC gaming, the simple nature of consoles has won me back over. Yes, you can’t mod your games as freely, you can’t...try out all those fun demos from Codex, and the fidelity won’t come close to the best of what PCs are capable of right now--especially in the future--but at the same time, you also don’t have to do any fiddling with settings, there’s no worrying about the quality of a PC port, and most importantly, a PS5 doesn’t multitask; it has one purpose: games, and I find myself not getting distracted by things that might normally pull me out of an experience on my PC, like untimely Windows Update restarts, random BSODs, or compatibility issues after said updates. Perhaps it’s just part of my ongoing bad run of luck with PC gaming, but it took an entire hour of messing with settings, watching a game crash repeatedly, and desperately scouring the Steam forums with a friend after Detroit: Become Human stopped working, thanks to an Nvidia GeForce Experience update for Cyberpunk 2077 rendering the former unstable and unable to be played without rolling back to a random sketchy upload of a driver from over six months ago. That’s not something that would ever happen on a console.

The amount of customization PCs provide is a blessing as much as it is a curse.

This generation, Microsoft and Sony seem to have understood what might pique the interest of PC gamers: giving players that same option between graphics and performance, in a simple box that doesn’t ask much of its user; just download a game or slide a disc in, and It Just Works (TM). Of course, not everyone is going to see things that way, and that’s fine. After all, the PC platform is all about giving users the freedom of choice, and now, excitingly, PlayStation and Xbox users are able to get a taste of that glorious freedom, too.

Man if you wanna argue you should probably be a lot less stupid or you'll just end up with another reason to not look at yourself in the mirror.

You're literally the overly defensive manchild everyone is laughing at in this thread. You pointlessly whine about how other people enjoy games like anyone gives a shit what you think even on a good day. You have no points to debunk anything because they don't exist. Consoles are simpler than PC, fact. The only way to deny that fact is to be too stupid to understand it. Consoles were DESIGNED to be simpler to bring gaming to a wider audience. PCs on the other hand are meant to cover a broad spectrum of uses.

Consoles are less powerful than some gaming computers, though you're grossly overestimating the average rig which for the same price could never keep up with a console. And despite consoles eventually "falling behind" they often hold up fairly well because they're a single system with effectively the exact same hardware, meaning optimizing for them is *significantly* easier than PC which could have untold combinations of parts. And not everyone is trying for 69k 420 FPS. Once 60 FPS is hit there's very little gained from going higher. Yeah gameplay gets smoother but for 99% of games it doesn't matter.

PCs have so many more moving parts (software wise) they are significantly more prone to error. In fact they're basically infinitely more prone because consoles effectively never have issues. Which is yet another key point in this thread. There's literally no denying this unless, again, you're just too stupid to understand it. You can google any game for PC and you will find people with issues asking questions how to fix them. You will not find those same threads for console because they don't exist.

If you ever pulled your head out of your ass you might actually see how sad and pathetic you are. You have no argument. You bought an expensive toy that 90% of us all also own on this site, but pretend you're special and elite anyway. Consoles have benefits, PCs have benefits. It's not about being technical, it's simply about tolerance. Like how we're all forced to tolerate your useless posts and opinions.
Sounds like I am not the one with the most internal issues and anger.

I was NEVER good at math, but your comment got me curious. What if you wanted the best of all worlds, but couldn't justify the cost?

Let's say it's $400 for a PS5 digital, $200 for a Switch Lite, and 1300 for a decent PC. that's $1900. A console generation lasts ~8 years, so divided up it's around $240 a year for 8 years, or $20/mo for that same timeframe...I think. I've had a Netflix account for around that much cost and for that many years, so it's almost tantamount in cost...just to acquire the systems, and no games at all...

If I was still a kid, then yeah no, that's way too sky-high a cost. But it seems like a really good run for your money, once it's all spread out like that. It makes me anxious to look back on the previous gen and see what kind of spending I racked up lol

People have spent the last 20 years trying to convince me that PC gaming is simple and streamlined, to no avail. Now that I have a job where, among many many other things, I have to deal with obtuse and unhelpful systems and software, the last thing I want to do is deal with all that when I’m trying to relax.

Please allow me to apologize. It may not seem obvious, but I do not like upsetting people and understand that I ruffled some 'feathers' in the way I went about sharing my opinions. Not the opinions themselves, but just the man-child way I went about it. I am certainly a man-child. But I promise its never my intention to be a troll or snide etc. Maybe I just need to work on how I go about sharing my opinions.

Wow, so much of the shit-slinging and personal insults being thrown around in this thread are out of line and uncalled for. I gotta say, I'm disappointed (but not overly surprised).

Anyway, I suppose I'll give my take on the OP. I'm of the mind where playing on consoles simply works better for me. I do like being able to keep work and play separate and it becomes easy to do that when I game primarily on consoles and work primarily on my laptop. I would much rather invest in a beefy laptop than a beefy desktop for portability and work sake, but the cost to get a decent "gaming laptop" is prohibitively expensive. So, to me, it's also more affordable for me to play on consoles. Most of the games that I'm interested in that are only for PC are ones that aren't very hardware intensive anyway. So I'd much rather play the majority of games on my PS4 and the few that I can't on my laptop.

Also, I'm just really addicted to PlayStation trophies, it's a real problem and I'm unable to stop. The digital trinkets are my reason for life, help me please.

I just don't get why people can't let people enjoy what they want without being ill-tempered, whiny turds about it. I enjoy multi platforms, but I don't see next gen consoles being that compelling.

This wonderful feature is exactly the reason I don't think I can ever leave consoles behind. There's just a beauty in selecting a game, then playing it. No weird buts or ifs about it. It's exactly the reason why I don't care that people want to be able to modify their Switch themes to be more... purple or whatever. I'm not going to stare at my switch home screen for more than 3 seconds at a time, unless I'm going into settings. For my PS4, having some themes makes a lot more sense, because it loads so damned slow at times that I could probably use a bit more ways to spice things up.

Nothing beats the Switch for me in that sense. I don't have to deal with day 1 updates most of the time, no install times, no nothing. It's just, select game - play.

Personally, that's part of the reason why I want a PS5 as well. It seems they understand that game consoles can use a lot of features, but (from watching streams), this time they seem to understand that for some people, they just want to select a game and play. I find myself sitting on a lot of PS4 games now that I legitimately still haven't played, despite buying them, and I find myself very excited to play them... on PS5, where they'll definitely need that stupid install time still, but atleast you get an amazing quality for it.

Still, I'm torn between the insane quality of the Xbox game pass system and my pre-existing PS4 to PS5 library on this one, not to mention the price hike on games deterring me from buying anything new. But I atleast know that despite having a decently powerful laptop, I kind of know I probably won't touch 10% of my steam library. Even if I upgrade to the biggest monster PC that I can afford, I still won't simply because it's a lot less of a set-and-forget thing (Especially as a guy who doesn't have a desk and can't really put a mouse anywhere, so prefers controller always). Nowadays, unless I'm streaming, I really prefer to just get into the game immediately, since I am (supposedly) an adult now and just don't have the time to commit to setting up an enjoyable experience.

I have a bad feeling about this.. and by that I mean the "simplicity" and plug n play feature of consoles going forward. There is a convergence that has been happening for a while now and it's especially evident with this new console launch and the amount of issues people are reporting with multiple games and systems. I don't think you can just put it all down to early firmware either.. it seems all too familiar to PC complaints.

Still, there's always Nintendo and its cartridge-based systems to keep the nostalgia alive.

I went from PC gaming > Xbox 360 > Xbox One > 3DS > Mobile / Switch

The Xbox 360 was great for the social aspect, everyone I seemed to know was playing on Xbox Live and we had some great new franchises such as Gears of War at the time, plus all the arcade games we're great for some casual gaming, such as competing for the best times on Marble Blast Ultra.

The Xbox One wasn't a great console at launch and i kinda lost interest in the Xbox / gaming after that, then Pokemon Go came out, I got hooked on that, which in turn ended up with me owning a 3DS and going back and playing the Pokemon games i'd missed since Heart Gold. Eventually getting a Switch and keeping my living dex up to date.

Here I am in 2021, I've not upgraded my PC for going on 10 years (still has a 1gb Radeon HD 6800 gpu) but other than not playing the latest games it still works great. The main game I play every day is Pokemon Go, our local community surrounding that game is great.

Maybe it's because i'm a lot younger and have a lot more free time than most people on this board but for the times when i did play pc gaming i never really was bothered about changing settings or trying to tinker with the BIOS or any weird stuff like that. And i surely never had any weird driver problems or BSOD's either. I agree with @D34DL1N3R , the PC driver stuff is overexaggerated. And i'd still take a pc even with the driver issues because of my career choices. (becoming an animator for prestigious studios like studio ghibli) I'm not just in it for gaming i'm in it for life
I honestly don't feel like the extra plug and play simplicity is worth it when i've already had a lot of that simplicity on both PC and consoles. There haven't been many games where i've had a problem with PC and not a problem on console. And i'd rather take the open platform and extra customization over simply being able to just plugnplay. I also don't mind solving problems because usually they're easily fixed. But yeah @Chary maybe you just live on a giant IBM PC indian burial ground and the spirits that reside there are cursing your Windows 10 PC.
Also fuck 70 dollar games

Man I'm a poor-ass person who lives in a third world country. If an old ass PC from 2010 allows me to play my favorite new indie games/Japanese games, some triple AAA games for free using piracy and epic games, every console game up to Wii u and some PS3 games then I won't buy a new console which I already can't afford.
Man, i hope your situation gets better even if you are satisfied with PC

Even if consoles got better i still can't justify them for the price point. For someone who ONLY plays games its fine but tbqh its still quite expensive than PC gaming with games now even trying to cost 70/80 Euro. I'd rather spend the 80 bucks on 16 GB RAM and towards a new PC which will outperform the consoles.

Consoles can't replace PC coz:

- You can't play FPS games with a controller, unless you use auto-aim.

- PC usually have some games that are exclusive for one main console, hence having PC provides more variety of games.

- PC have a variety of working emulators, which are limited for consoles.

- With PC you can use Cheat engine.

- You can use PC for more than gaming while consoles are only for gaming.

- PC can be upgraded, console not.

- PC is backward compatible, most consoles are not or not as background
compatible

- Finally the question to ask is:

Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
