Steve Easterbrook admits restaurant has role to play – but points finger at interactive entertainment
The chief executive of McDonald’s UK has hit out at video games for being a major cause of the childhood obesity crisis.

Steve Easterbrook told The Times that the food and drinks industry shared responsibility for the issue with individuals and Government.

But he made special mention of the popularity of games – and said they have reduced the amount of time young people spend outdoors “burning off energy”.

“The issue of obesity is complex and is absolutely one our society is facing, there’s no denial about that,” said Easterbrook. “But if you break it down I think there’s an education piece: how can we better communicate to individuals the importance of a balanced diet and taking care of themselves?

“Then there’s a lifestyle element: there’s fewer green spaces and kids are sat home playing computer games on the TV when in the past they’d have been burning off energy outside.”

According to The Times, McDonalds UK is ‘on the brink of its best year for two decades’. The firm has enjoyed six per cent like-for-like sales growth in the last year. More than 88 million visits were made to McDonald's restaurants last month, up 10 million on the previous year.

He does kinda make a point there... fast food coupled with gaming is a bad combo. Gaming by itself isn't bad as long as you don't eat fast food and keep your Daily Intake to what is recommended for a resting person.

I don't know that video games have so much to do with it, but lack of exercise is the main cause of obesity, not food intake. The average caloric intake has not increased over the past few decades nearly as much as the average calories burned has decreased.

I'm not saying that fast food restaurants aren't part of the problem (they sure aren't part of the solution), but they certainly aren't the whole problem.

Mc.Ds is just mad cause burger king made xbox games =P but no really...i love to see chief execs pointing fingers like little babies and raddling off some PR bullshiz...Of course Mcdonalds makes you fat, you don't need to play games as well. Pretty sure I could bidge on McDs and work out all day and still be unhealthy. Come on now...!
Too much Games...make you idle, but you can change that when you want.
Too much Fat/salt/sugar make you fat/stupid/dead....not much you can do about that.

*shivers* ugh, I saw people in America order 4 freaking patties in a burger... Canada doesn't allow such thing, but people just buy two of them at once. Seriously, when economy is too good, and the lazy people can make money easier, we become the fatest nation...

Where did you visit, the Bible Belt? Because there aren't that many huegly fat people in Florida or New England (Probably many other places in the US as well but I just live in Florida and visit New England/DC a lot).

Oh and I only get 4 patties on a burger if I haven't eaten in 8 hours or so. I rarely go to McDs anyway.

McDonalds has been making folks fat even before video games where as popular as they are today.

I'm sure obesity isn't as much of a problem in other places than the U.S., but here fast food restaraunts is the main cause to obesity...

Americans are disgusting people when it comes to eating habits. I'm a Nigerian-Jamaican and soon to be cardiologist (heh, I got goals in my junior year) and the fattiest thing I eat is whole wheat spaghetti with olive oil on it (great source of monounsaturated fats, the best kind) and

I cannot even imagine eating any of the utter shit I see people gulping down. From soda to shakes, burgers to fried chicken, it all looks like death served on a silver (or paper) platter to me. I drink three things: water, milk, and green/peppermint tea. That's it. Well, at least McDonalds will mean more business for me when I get older...even though that's a grim thought for one to think.

People don't move around a lot when reading books, therefore I think books are a cause of obesity.

Why is it that video games have become the scapegoat for everything bad in our country?

Secret Service: The president just got assassinated!
Media: It must have been video games.
SS: But-
Media: He was killed by a gun, right?
SS: Yes, but-
Media: Those are in video games. Case closed.
