LEGO City: Undercover has been delisted from the Wii U and 3DS eShops

header.jpg

What was once a Wii U exclusive has been removed from the platform. 2013's LEGO City: Undercover has been delisted from the Wii U eShop, along with LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins on the Nintendo 3DS, joining the ranks of Netflix and DSiWare titles in a recent removal spree occurring on older Nintendo systems. At the very least, both games had a physical release, and LEGO City: Undercover was re-released on the Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

In this day and age, the question I have is why not preserve what we can?

At least back then they had the excuse of not knowing that decades later people would want to enjoy old media.

Again your opinion just comes across as short sighted.

Edit:

Funnily enough, I’ve recently been playing Sonic Unleashed, a game that was at one point delisted because of it’s ‘mediocre’ review score even though I later found enjoyment from it on some level.

I'm talking about the relevance of keeping games over a span of 80 years, and I'm being short sighted.

Your question, is why not preserve, but if it's a game literally no one is playing, what's the point? Just because its possible, doesn't mean it should, or needs to be done.

Even if there was a motion to preserve everything, how would it be managed? Hiding games behind a search engine would mean even less people are going to find and play 1 lego game out of the 100's that's out there, and having everything on display to browse is far from practical, its already easy to overlook a good new game on the current store fronts.

for the 1% of people that care about 'preservation' theres romset and emulation, for the other 99% of people, they're gonna buy games, play games and move on.

Not that I condone piracy of course - but if you can't get the games legally, where else are you going to get them?
Well, in this particular case, you would get it on Steam or one of the other platforms that is still supported. Just sayin'. (Of course, that does not apply if the 3DS version is indeed a different game.)

I agree that stuffing terabytes of content on a hard drive and then tossing it in a drawer is much less an act of "preservation" than actually playing/watching the content and telling other people about it. But that takes time and effort.

3DS version is a prequel to the main game, and wasn't ported to any other platforms. It's also a fair bit more cut down than the other versions, but you're still free to roam around the map as you please, albeit with a much shorter render distance and just as long load times.

The slow, subtle, yet evident removal of games makes me wonder why they're doing it this way. My theory is because the amount of Wii U and 3DS users, while not actively buying games and accessories anymore for these devices, are still significantly enough to keep the eShop for these platforms alive, that's why they haven't closed.

I also theorize that these eShops are too closely tied to the Switch eShop (despite requiring a NNID instead of just using your Nintendo Account details), so shutting down their services outright might cripple the Switch. Thus, instead of actually closing the eShop, they're delisting games in small batches, or one by one as far as retail games are concerned. Retail games, DSiWare, WiiWare, and other things that are either very old or can be found in stores, are what is going first. Next will probably be Virtual Console titles, and then we will start seeing some digital-only titles vanish.

@Larsenv Since this is going on, I hope you're considering adding 3DS and Wii U titles to your repo - they may very well be next in the line of abandonware to go!

Let's hope it's just for space issues, would love to see sales numbers for the delisted games, they couldn't be getting many sales on em.

The 3DS & WiiU userbase can't allow the online services to be switched off, make it clear were not done with them.

Some posters on here seem like they work for Nintendo or on the business side of things by suggesting shutting the servers off, no more stoopid anti-consumer suggestions please

Lego City Undercover on disc for Wii U is 8$ used nowadays and can be ripped to digital easily so when people start mention piracy already I think it is jumping the gun a bit, but at the same time used games are “theft” anyway for publishers and devs since they make no money on a used game sale.

It will be interesting to see if they delete the game data server side so it can’t be downloaded with CDN downloading tools

If they're planning on shutting down online services for the Wii U and 3DS, then why not just do it outright, instead of delisting things bit by bit?

i own Mario kart 8 with season pass, still try to play online nowdays, but sadly no one queue mk8 on WIIU anymore, the online is pretty dead

The online is pretty much active, I play almost every day and always find rooms with at least 5 players, regardless of the time of day.

People nowadays only play online with both or none of the dlcs, if you are trying to play using only one of the dlcs (or trying to join regional rooms) you probably never find anyone.

I don't think any one has said it yet, but Lego City Undercover is also on the Nintendo Switch, both in the E-shop and in in stores, I think its 19.99 in the states and 29.99 in Canada. For Either Hard Copy or Digital.

I thought about getting it on the Nintendo Switch, I had no Idea it was on the 3Ds.. wow! I own Lego Worlds on the Nintendo Switch really love that game. Ended up being cheaper than buying it for the PC, great game.

Edit: And ya now I am seeing some one did say it was on the Switch haha,

I know, what I meant is that it getting harder and will get even harder compared to few years ago
eMule and a lot of other classic p2p programs mostly solved the "finding files is hard" problem 2 decades ago, not my fault most people were lured to other systems that don't offer this advantage :)
