Gaming The fate of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Part 2 - Will it remain on PS4, or shift to PS5?

Should SquareEnix release the 2nd half on PS4?

  • Keep it exclusively on PS4 - [Keep both games on the same console family]

  • Make it exclusively on PS5 - [Split the games between the console families]

  • Release it on both the PS4 and the PS5 - [Release the game on both PS4 and PS5]

There's a short article about it here, but I've also been wondering this myself. I bought a PS4 Pro last year, mainly to play this game in it's entirety, I didn't know the PS5 would drop before the 2nd game would come out, and now it seems the game's future hangs in limbo for PS4 users. I don't have the money to blow on a PS5, as we just got the PS4 Pro last year, and haven't really even gotten our money's worth of play time out of it yet. Our library is full of about 8 or 9 AAA disc games, and a bunch of free digital PS Plus games. But that's straying off topic a bit. Do you think Sony will release it on the PS4? PS5? Both? I'm honestly hoping both, with the added ability to play the PS4 version of Part 1 on the PS5, with enhancements through a patch or something. That's probably the best-case scenario for not cornering your fans into buying a PS5 that they can't even buy for retail price right now, thanks to scalpers. I hope Sony and Square both keep their loyal PS4 owners happy by releasing a PS4 version.

What are your thoughts on this?

I really hope it is for both, because thet would indeed be rude AF if they didn't. I just hope they don't water down the PS4 version just to make the PS5 version look far superior. I want the same great quality PS4 Pro experience as the first game. I have an SSD installed, which fixed the texture pop-in sharpening issues.

This is square enix, the same company who announced Final Fantasy VS XIII as a ps3 exclusive, pretended it didn't exist for YEARS, only to later change it to Final Fantasy XV and skip a generation ahead.

My guess is that VII-2 will be PS5 only and we won't see it for another year or three, maybe more. By the time it releases, public pressure will probably be too bring VII remake forward to PS5 to unify them, not the other way around.

Depends on how far along development is really, they claimed to have started around October 2019, and presuming they won't bother updating the engine at all or changing assets a huge amount, I imagine we could see Part 2 around Q2-Q3 2021 (AKA June-September). If that's the case, then they'll definitely do a dual PS4/PS5 release, especially given the stock situation with next gen consoles, and how that likely won't change at all until like second half of 2021.

I'd expect they'd still do a PS4 release in 2022 as well, but only if it ends up releasing around the same Q1 timeframe as part one.

Considering the engine is already made, and many of the major assets are done and will be reused, I definitely think a holiday 2021 release is possible. After all, post-release patches will fix any game-breaking bugs found later.

personally, I think it will be on both the ps4 and the ps5. I'm on too low a firmware with the ps4, and I don't ever intend on owning a ps5, so it's unlikely I'll be able to play it. I'm at the final dungeon in the original on the switch though. I got killed when I got ambushed from both sides and was met with constant spamming of lv3 flare with only two people in my party (after you split up).

I'd love to see another FF game come to the PS1 TBH... Or see somebody mod the original game to be more like the remake. Like retexturing, better models, etc. The HD battle models could have easily been used outside of battle, the chibi ones really suck. Even by Square and PS1 standards.

I think it will depend on when the game is set to release and when the PS4 loses AAA support/becomes second tier.

If we’re talking 2021, a PS4 release is likely with maybe a PS5 version/enhancement patch.

Any later and we’e probably looking at PS5 only with a ‘remastered’ version of the first one.

i would have said release it on both but after cp77 i have learned going all or nothing can be better than a half-arsed game.
All those delays for 2077, and they still released an unpolished turd... as if the delays were all for nothing. They could have at least squeezed out a sub-20FPS version for the Switch, and stomped on my balls first.

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.

It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
